Okay, so I know it’s totally not Friday, but have you seen Call the Midwife? While I was recovering from dental surgery I finished the first 2 seasons. They. Were. Awesome. Like, Downton Abbey awesome. The first season is FREE if you have Amazon Prime, and I dare you not to be willing to pay for the second season once you have seen it!
It’s about midwives in East London in the 1960’s. East London was notoriously poor, women had no access to birth control, lived in pretty meager conditions, etc. The show follows these women as they give birth–all through the eyes of the midwives who help them.
Let me tell you, Bob, the British have done it again. It is totally worth sitting down to watch if you haven’t already.
Season 3 won’t come out until some time in 2014, so you have plenty of time to catch up.
Let me know what you think,
Mavis

I love this show. So glad you discovered it.
Jenn says
If it is as good as Downton Abbey then I’ll have to check it out. I love me some Downton Abbey!
Mavis Butterfield says
Oh you will love it! 🙂
Mrs. Mac says
I saw this recently on PBS (we only have bunny ears for reception). My special needs son was wide eyed watching with me til I shooed him out of the room.

Love this show. Have you seen Land Girls yet? Another British import.
Leanna says
Call the Midwife is awesome. I discovered the movies and then read the books. I recommend the books as well. Sure can’t wait for Season 3.
Jennifer Jo says
One more show to add to my to-watch list upon returning home. (I think we maybe will get Amazon Prime and forgo Netflix. Smart move? Yes? No?)
Michelle S says
Darn it! Looks like season 1 is no longer free for Prime??? I’m bummed, I was so excited with your Downton Abbey comparison… oh well, maybe I can get it from the library or something. Thank you for the recommend though! 🙂

LOVE call the midwife. Watched it on Netflix. Haven’t seen season two yet because I’ve been too cheap but might have to break down soon. Awesome show.
I didn’t know about the books! Will check them out for sure.
xoxo

I’m glad you like it too and are spreading the word! I love Downton, but I’d rank Midwife even higher. Bless PBS.
Wendy Phelps says
I loved the first two seasons, we saw them on free TV. I am sure glad I didn’t live in those conditions, I’m sure there were areas in Australia to compare with those conditions during the forties and fifties though. Women have always been tough. I think I loved it more than Downton Abbey, can’t wait for the next series.
Heather says
Love it!! They have it at my library!!
Tina Barrett says
Loved it so much I bought both seasons at Costco. I have been watching them on my kitchen TV while I have been canning all my garden produce. The best of both worlds! 😉
Cecily says
If you liked Call the Midwife and Downton Abbey you should watch The Bletchley Circle. It is on par with the others but more of a thriller.
Mavis Butterfield says
I’ll take a look! 🙂
Paula says
You might want to check out Larkrise to Candleford.

Have you seen any of the River Cottage programmes? They’re a completely different genre to Call the Midwife etc, but if you haven’t seen them I think you’d love them, especially the earliest ones. More vegetables, fewer midwives…
Mavis Butterfield says
I’ll take a look. Thanks!
Susan says
Yes I love River Cottage, I would say Hugh is almost like a Brittish Mavis! Ha Ha. I am hanging out for trhe next season. It motivates me to getout in the garden, and cooking what we grow too.
Michele says
I think I just saw season 1 on Netflix a couple of days ago. I just saw the last two episodes of season 2 on PBS, they may still have all of them. I’m on my phone or I would check for y’all.
Jennifer says

Charly says
I think Call the Midwife is the best show on television! I’ve gotten all of my friends to start watching it.
Rarely do you find such a well-done program with a nearly all woman ensemble cast. Can’t wait for the next season!
Janis says
Love, love, love!! Can’t wait for the new episodes.
Corinne says
Yes! Great show! I will check out some of the others mentioned here, too. I’m glad a couple people pointed out that you can watch Season 2 of Midwives for free on PBS.com!
Michelle S says
Corinne, where did you find the full episodes for Season 2 on PBS.com? I only found “sneak peeks” and “behind the scenes” stuff.
