A few weeks ago, my buddy Heather from Massachusetts and I went to Portland, Maine for the Maine Flower Show. But on the way to the flower show, we stopped off at two different local bakeries for rations. One of our stops was to Boulangerie, A Proper Bakery in Kennebunk, Maine.
As she was driving down the street to get back on the highway, we passed by a shop with a bunch of antiques in the window, and on a whim, she quickly turned the corner and parked behind the building and we went in.
Well. We didn’t exactly stumble upon an antique store. 😉 As it turned out, the store was named Camp Wool {which I found a little odd when we got to the door of the shop because Camp Wool sounded like a strange name for an antique store}.
And as it turned out, although Camp Wool did have a small assortment of antique items at the front of the store, Camp Wool was really a HOOKER’S PARADISE!!!! I squealed with delight.
OH MY WORD…. I think we just found the BEST stitchery / rug hooking store on the planet earth, I remember saying under my breath to my friend Heather. LOOK AT ALL THIS!!!
Heather isn’t a hooker, or into wool, or any of the same type of sewing things I am interested in, so I knew my time was very limited and that I would need to come back when I had enough time to browse and get a proper look around the shop.
So I quickly scanned the aisles to hone in on what I wanted to spend the next few minutes looking at while Heather wandered around the store.
Gaaaaaaa! There were SO MANY things to look at. To say I was overwhelmed would be a BIG understatement.
Camp Wool not only had an insane amount of hand dyed and off the bolt wool to choose from, but every imaginable primitive stitchery, needle punch, wool applique pattern imaginable.
If ever there was a time to use the phrase … Amazeballs …. this would be it! 😉
Yada yada yada… I found my happy place.
3 days later I was back in the store and got to wander up and down the aisles until my heart was content. The store owner was there so I was able to chat it up with her for a bit as well as and talk to one of her very knowledgeable employees about possibly taking a needle punch class {something I’ve thought about doing over the past few years}.
I went home with a couple of new rug hooking patterns, a list of local shops, rug hooking camps and shows I should attend in the fall and a huge smile on my face.
It felt so GOOD to find yet another amazing place to visit here in New England. These are my people. And I can’t wait to finish hooking the patterns I picked up so I can go back for more.
So, if you ever find yourself in the Kennebunk area, be sure and pop by Camp Wool. Who knows, I might see you there. 🙂
Have a WONDERFUL Friday everyone,
~Mavis

I would of been gasping for breath. What a great store, sort of glad it’s way too far for a day trip for me as I’d break the bank for sure. Happy for you, a inspirational place to get new ideas for your rugs.

So yes- this place is amazing- to say the very least! I am always overwhelmed when I go in there.I want to do absolutely EVERYTHING!
You may be interested in a rug hooking sail that a friend and I are putting together in August- rug hooking and sailing on a wooden windjammer- the J&E RIGGIN. Susan Feller will be our teacher and Anne Mahle is the co- captain and chef extraordinaire . We have 2 spaces left…just saying- hookers are everywhere in New England!
Enjoy your new found store and consider going with us- we went last fall and it was amazing. We call ourselves 207Creatives-and more info is on instagram with some photos, etc.
