Yesterday the HH and I headed out on a little date day adventure in search of the apple cider doughnuts everyone keeps raving about and ended up at Congdon’s Doughnuts in Wells, Maine. The parking lot… was PACKED! And so you know what that means right, the doughnuts must be DELICIOUS.
Fun fact: Congdon’s After Dark is the only food truck park in New England operating on a daily basis during the summer. Not only is there a doughnut hut, but taco, lobster, weenie, falafel, wraps and potato trucks that come round each night {and on the weekends during the month of October}.
Since we were there during the early morning hours, we didn’t get to see them all in action {the food truck park is only open in the late afternoon/evenings in the summer}. What a cool concept though. We’ll have to check it out next summer for sure.
Inside Congdon’s is totally old school and the line was about 6 people deep {but it moved really fast}.
And while the doughnuts are not cheap… they are worth every penny and taste like a good old fashioned doughnut should. I had an apple cider doughnut AND a Bavarian cream doughnut and they were crazy good. The filling in the Bavarian cream was insanely rich and custardy {I know custardy isn’t a word, but I kind of think it is now}.
Need a whoopie pie as big as a dinner plate? Congdon’s has got you covered.
Fresh baked bread? Yep.
A little treat for Fido? They’ve got those too. 😉
We ended up ordering a half dozen doughnuts. Apple fritter, apple cider x 2, chocolate chocolate, Bavarian cream, and a honey doughnut. We loved them all.
Congdon’s Doughnuts in Wells, Maine. Go check them out. They’re the real deal!
Have a great Thursday everyone,

They have a really good lobster eggs Benedict, too, in the restaurant. BE Sure to try Rococco ice cream in Wells or Kennebunkport – AMAZING!
Mavis Butterfield says
Rococco ice cream is on my list! Just waiting for the tourists to leave. 🙂
Carolina Cooper says
When the last leaves fall from the trees, the tourists are gone. Almost there, yeah!!!
Robin in WI says
LOVE apple cider donuts! The supermarkets (Pick ‘N Save, Pig, etc.) sell them every fall.
Kelly says
Congdons is great but you have got to try the Holy Donut in Portland and Scarborough Maine! Amazing donuts made from potatoes. Their seasonal flavors are to die for.
Katelyn says
YES!!! Congdon’s is the cat’s pajamas! I live in VT, and have stopped at Congdon’s whenever we head north for a Maine Vacation. Usually we try to get there around lunch time, when the doughnuts of the day go on sale, and take a whole dozen home. Honey dipped is my favorite. We have a plentiful supply of Apple cider doughnuts throughout VT.
Moody beach in Wells is my favorite place in the Northeast, due to it’s privacy and some fantastic memories of Mother’s day weekend vacations as I was growing up.
Tammy says
WE also live in Vermont no can’t wait to have breakfast at Congdons and bring home donuts whenever we are there’s.
Suzanne Shaw says
I plan to be in the area this weekend. Going there, and also Boulangerie Bakery in Kennebunk.
Mavis Butterfield says
If you are going to be in Portland, Maine Holy Donut makes a wonderful potato donut. Also, the 1690 House in Wells, Maine makes a wonderful breakfast sandwich and La Maison Navarre in Portsmouth, NH has delicious pastries and tarts. Boulangerie Bakery in Kennebunk is one of my favorites!!
Tracy says
Custardy is definitely a word…at least in my dictionary!
LISA GILKERSON says
What is a Blamark?
Lynn says
I believe the word on the menu board is “Bismark.”
Beth says
We were just in Wells a couple of weekends ago, love the area but I have to say we tried the Holy Donuts up near Portland based on a recommendation and I was not a fan. I do love Congdon’s though, they were very good.
KSmom says
The name of the doughnut shop reminded me of one of the characters in Robert McCloskey’s children’s book One Morning in Maine. As a lover of New England, you’re probably familiar with his books already, but if not they are so worth checking out – fun for all ages, I think, not just kids!
bobbi says
Wow, they look yummy!! 🙂
Debi says
Wells is our favorite summer camping spot and every morning hubby goes to Condon’s and picks out two special treats for breakfast or our morning snack. Glad you got to try them out!

Native Californian here, and I have questions.
1, What is a Bismark doughnut?
2. What are apple cider doughnuts like — mostly just cinnamon-flavored or are they really apple-y? (Is that a word?)
3. A group of food trucks is called a food pod.
4. I can’t help but think of lobster as luxury food, yet it seems omnipresent in New England. Is it pricey or common/everyday?
Chris says
In the Midwest, a Bismark is a jam filled yeast donut (no hole) that is rolled in regular white sugar. The best ones have so much jam that it oozes out with every bite.
Pj says
A Bismark is a long donut with white cream filling with chocolate or top. They are also calledcream filled long johns in some places.
I was a little surprised at the prices, but they look like twice the size of a standard donut.

Dag nabit Mavis! Did you take your dog for a walk on the beach this week? I thought that it looked like you!! I told my husband and he said go ask but I didn’t, we were the other crazy people roaming a maine beach in October. My husband was sporting cargo shorts in true Maine fashion..

Mavis Butterfield says
🙂 Yep.
Suzie says
The very best Bismarck donuts are made at the cookie jar bakery in cape Elizabeth, they are filled with the sweetest jam and whipped cream, yeast donut with a powdered sugar coating. Two hands needed to hold this baby!! Heavenly delicious.
Klutzy says
I know this is old but a Bismarck is what Julie Andrews fainted over in Victor/Victoria.
