This past week I pretty much lived off of cough drops and ice cream as I’m still getting over a nasty case of strep throat. I’d say I’m operating at about 80% right now and still taking a mini nap here and there. Hopefully by the end of this week I’ll be back to normal.
Luckily though I’ve got the BEST snuggle buddy in the world. 😉
Market Bassket $78.51
The HH was down south this week and so he popped into Market Basket to load up on essentials. I think the only thing that wasn’t on my list was the stir fry veggies. Which, by the way, I thought was a bit of an odd purchase because I had requested RICE!
“The rice was too expensive, so I bought the vegetables instead.” Umm okay? Whatever. Husbands are weird, and I’ll leave it at that.
Rosemary ham. I am addicted!! Have you had it before? It’s so much better than black forest or honey ham. I love in a sandwich or on toast with scrambled eggs on top.
Here’s most of what we ate this past week:
Avocado toast.
Peanut butter toast with bananas. It was only after I bit into a slice that I realized I should have drizzled a little honey over the top. But I didn’t want to get up from the table. Ha!
Tuna salad sandwich. Sandwiches are better with lettuce and cheese, don’t you think?
A crock pot full of split pea soup. Mmm Mmm good! It lasted practically all week!
I’m out of pickled beets again. 🙁
And last but not least, red roasted pepper hummus and vegetables. Quick and easy. That was the name of the game this past week.
This coming week though, I think it will be a little different. 😉
So what’s new in YOUR kitchen? Is the weather starting to heat up at your place? Don’t you just love how early the sun is coming up these days? It’s so nice to wake up to it being light out again. I’m loving it!
Here’s to a fantastic week,
~Mavis

I just got done reading a book on plastic and am now a bit more aware how it is everywhere. I cannot help but notice the second grocery picture how everything is encased in some type of plastic. This makes me sad and angry. Nothing you or I can control much as we need our groceries, but to see it in a picture and the reality of it and how much it dominates our groceries. I remember as a kid berries coming in cardboard baskets and not plastic clamshells and all eggs were sold in cardboard egg containers.

Mavis, you’ve been sick for quite some time. You poor thing! We’re in a bit of survival mode over here as my husband has been sick for a few weeks, the kids have been sick off and on for about a month (missed 2 out of 3 weeks of preschool), and I’ve been sick since last week. Easy/whatever my kids are willing to eat is the name of the game at the moment. that we’re all healthy soon. I’ve got two new raised beds to get soil in and plants going!

I buy jasmine rice by the giant bag at Costco. I keep a container in my kitchen and the rest in a clean, sealed 5 gallon bucket in my pantry. Takes a long time to use up that much rice!

Hubby and I both came down with strep last week but I used essential oils for us and we got over it in four days. Thank goodness. I hope you done with it soon.
A T says
Would you tell more about this method please? Which oils and how do you use them for strep throat?
Thank you!
Lana says
We used Plague Defense blend from hopewelloils.com. Diffuse 30 minutes every six hours or just put ten drops in a cotton ball and keep it near you around the clock. Drink lots of water so the dead virus can flush out of the body

Have you followed up with your doctor? If you did a round of antibiotics, you truly should feel fine by now! I can’t take Z packs (the 3 day antibiotic) because I always need a second round. It has to be the good old 10 day antibiotic for me.
Deborah R says
Yes, you should have felt much better within 48 hours of starting antibiotics. If not you should see your doctor because there can be serious complication from strep.

This past week we attempted to eat in and buy groceries very sparingly. This Sunday we had company and I made ribs I bought back in January that were in the freezer. They came out great! I added smashed potatoes and a can of baked beans, it was perfect!
Most other meals have been slowly eaten and eaten and eaten again. I plan on doing this for another week or two to whittle away at our freezer and pantry stashes. Also, sales were very spare this week. I bought some chocolate milk for my son and Ben & Jerry’s on sale with a digital coupon, other than that I will wait for sales…

Mavis, I hope you’re at least to 90% now! Have Doctor Lucy and your darling husband do the snuggling (and work) for now. Basically, rest is about the only thing that’s going to cure this stuff quickly.
Thinking of you, girl.
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks Cindy. I rarely get sick, and I think is the longest patch I’ve ever gone through.
Annette says
If you have strep throat you should replace your toothbrush or you can reinfect yourself.

Just wanted to jump in here and say I really enjoy your blog!
Gardening, creativity of all kinds, a love for the British Isles, even frugality!
These are the things we have in common.
While I don’t accomplish quite as much as you seem to, you inspire me to make decisions and commitments for myself.
Cheers, Mavis!

Thanks Elisabeth! 🙂

I had strep on and off for 6 months that apparently was resistent to drugs I took. Doctor finally said I needed to have my tonsils out (not fun as an adult, but got to eat LOTS of ice cream, and didn’t get strep again). Do you still have yours?

I am running low on freezer meals, which is nice, now my freezers can be filled with ingredients for quick, grillable meals, meaning kebobs, marinated chicken, burger patties, fish, etc. We always eat lighter for the summers, so I will be buying bags of shrimp, hot dogs, and burgers. No casseroles or heavy cooking until the holidays. Here come the ribs!
This next week, I’m planning on spaghetti with meat sauce, grilled steak tacos (great way to make one steak stretch for the family), grilled shrimp kebabs with a grilled romaine salad, and burgers with grilled sweet potato halves.
Feel better and enjoy the weather!
