After collecting some baby potatoes yesterday I decided to make creamed peas and potatoes. If you’e never made creamed peas and potatoes from scratch before, let me tell you Bob, this stuff is good. There is absolutely no comparison to the frozen stuff in the box. In fact, once you’ve had the real thing, you’ll never to back. Ever.
Here is the recipe. I hope you like it! 🙂
Ingredients
2 pounds new potatoes, quartered
3 cups fresh {or frozen peas}
2 sliced bacon, cooked and chopped
1 cup water
2 tablespoons onion, chopped
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon fresh chives
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 cups milk {I used 2%}
1/2 cup heavy cream {half and half would work too}
Directions
Place the new potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and let simmer for 10 minutes covered {or until slightly tender}. Drain and set aside.
In another saucepan, blanch the peas in boiling water for 2 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Melt butter in a large saucepan and saute the onion until translucent. Slowly whisk in the flour, salt and pepper until their is a nice paste. Slowly add milk and heavy cream. Bring to a boil and cook 2 minutes {or until the sauce has thickened}. Fold in the potatoes and peas and let simmer for a minute or two until the potatoes and peas are warm. Garnish with crumbled bacon and chives.

Love your blog Mavis and love this recipe. I have never seen purple potatoes before. Since that is my favorite color, I have really been missing out! I just had a giggle, at my age it doesn’t take much. When I save recipes, I add the initials from the site, blog, person, etc that I get the recipe from to the recipe name to differentiate recipes with the same name. So when I saved your recipe it looks like this: Creamed_Peas_And_Potatoes_ohdam . I’m telling ya, doesn’t take much to entertain me 🙂

as a child i loved this and appreciate the reminder
when i make it i am careful to use not too much water to cook veggies with and utilize some of it in the sauce with half and half cream
fresh ground pepper ofcourse and for variation may add some curry and or other herb/spice mixtures

I made this for my family tonight and it was super yummy! I used russet potatoes instead of new because my grocery store didn’t have new, and I subbed about 1.5 cups of ham for the bacon to make it our main dish. This recipe definitely goes into my “Make Again” file! Thanks!!

This was one of my favorite dishes growing up..and was also one the few things my Mom cooked well! She could bake up a storm but cooking meals..not so much!

One of my neighbors is the exact same way. An amazing baker, but can’t cook dinner to save her life. I guess everyone in her family lives on cookies and pies!
