Quote of the Day “Being sick is just your body’s way of saying you are too awesome, and you need to slow down, so everyone else can catch up.”
Hello Friday! Lucy was showing little signs of improvement yesterday and even ate a wee bit only to later throw up and hour later. Today she will be visiting the local vet who comes highly recommend and I’m hoping we can get some answers. She is able to stay hydrated but I think she’s drinking way too much water {about 4 cups a day!} so we will just have to see what the vet says.
Wishing you the best of weekends, and thank you for all your suggestions and kind thoughts, we read every single one of them. XOXOXO
♥ Mavis

Have a great day! Love that pic of Miss Lucy snuggled up on the fur.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Lucy!

I know you said she caught a mouse any chance that mouse might have ingested rat poison?

I hope you get the answers you are seeking. I am sending positive thoughts your way.

I give Baxter a table spoon of pumpkin right out of the can, it helps with upset stomach and works quickly. Waiting to hear more and I can’t stand it when our best four legged babies are sick.

All the water drinking makes me wonder about diabetes insipidus related to Addison’s. Hoping for good news soon
Sadee says
This was my thought as well. Diabetes in animals can sometimes be difficult to diagnose, but, it is worth the effort to check it out. It is something which can be treated. Prayers for you all.
Beth says
Prayers for you and little Lucy
Christy m says
Mavis, my dog had something called diabetes insipidus. (Not like regular diabetes.) Her body doesn’t make a hormone that controls thirst and urine compounding. It came on like this. It is very rare, but it happens. My dog takes desmopressin acetate 3x a day to replace those hormones.
Jess McCarthy says
It’s funny that you mentioned this, because it reminded me of all of the warning signs for type 1 diabetes. My friend’s son has it and right before he got diagnosed he was drinking obsessively.
Tracy Woodside says
Many well wishes for Little Lucy.

Prayers for answers and a speedy recovery!

Please do update today after Miss Lucy sees the vet. Poor baby!

Hi Mavis, Sorry to hear about Lucy Girl! I was just wondering, have you checked around the yard for rat or mouse poison? Usually Warfarin comes in green bricks and is often used to deter rats. If she ate any of the mouse or punctured the skin and it had rat poison in it, that would make her increasingly thirsty. Just a thought after you said she caught the mouse!

The best advice I was given (by an old vet I highly respected) was to take my basset hound with a mystery ailment to the Texas A&M small animal clinic. That advice was awesome and I try to pass it along to others. If you have a vet school near enough it could be a wonderful option for Lucy.
Our dog received the BEST care I have ever received and the price was so much more affordable than regular vet offices. I do not remember what we paid for our Addison’s test, but our whole visit including Addison’s test was probably half the price you mentioned. In fairness, we were doing this 15 years ago. Prices change.
Our basset hound acted completely fine but would fizzle out on short walks. It was not until she started throwing up that I could get better help. Turns out it was not throwing up, but regurgitating….the food never made it to her stomach. An xray showed megaesophagus. That was when I got my old vets advice. I had to demand a referral to TAMU, but it was worth it.
The visit started with 2 vet school students. They took a COMPLETE history. They were the first ones to truly LISTEN to what I had to say, so all the dots could be connected. I had already armed myself with some knowledge of Addison’s Disease and was prepared to demand that test. I did not mention it but waited to hear from them first. Addison’s was one cause of Megaesophagus. I did not need to demand. The graduate vet student reviewed the notes and then came to us asking to test her for Addison’s. The result was Atypical Addison’s Disease. Half of her adrenal gland was working and half not. That was also why she seemed to have half the symptoms I had researched.
After the diagnosis, we found a local vet to visit monthly for blood work. I interviewed many. First, I needed to find one that had experience with this disease and then secondly prices for blood work, making sure it could be done in-house.
She was on prednisone only and in the end a very small dose. The trick was finding the right amount, which could sometimes fluctuate. It was also much cheaper for us to fill the prescriptions at the human pharmacy. Back then, they would always laugh about the medicine being for a dog….but I think now it is a common practice.
The good news is that once on the prednisone her megaesophagus resolved. She handled the Addison’s Disease like a pro. She stayed Atypical never changing to full-blown Addison’s. We had her for another 5 or 6 years with a good quality of life. When we did have to put her down at the age of 10, it was not the Addison’s Disease.
I truly hope this is not what Lucy has, however, it is quite manageable if she does. Don’t let all the reading scare you. I found it helpful to reach out to other owners….but beware with that too, as you know. Every Addison’s case is different. What works for one may not work for another. I just liked having other opinions in order to help me define my own on how to best help my Bailey…..because even the vet may not know best for your dog.
Good Luck to Lucy and all. I hope you have a vet school close enough to consider as an option.

Interesting story (and thank goodness for vet schools).
Thank you for sharing!

Poor Lucy! And poor you and HH, as I know how worried you must be about your best friend. It’s awful when they’re sick/hurt. Glad to know you have a good vet recommendation. Sending good thoughts to all and hoping for better news about Her Royal Sweetness soon!
Laura says
Good luck to all of you today. Hoping that whatever she is suffering from is manageable and controllable. So hard to help our doggers when they are sick. I always wanted my pups to be able to talk to me and tell me where it hurt. Lots of sleuthing to sort it all out. Sending positive vibes your way and looking forward to hearing what the heck it ended up being!
Good luck and much love to Lucy!!

Sick dogs will not eat no matter what smelly, appetizing thing you stick under their nose. The vet can administer meds for nausea which could be the reason for not eating. They can also administer meds to help increase the appetite. Dogs can go a few days between meals and do fine. Cats cannot. Glad to hear that Lucy is being seen again. There are a number of things her symptoms could point to but you may never know what the cause is. It’s important though that she get supportive treatment for her symptoms. I’m so sorry you and she are going through this. I love little Lucy! Hugs to you both! From a mom of 7 pups.

Hoping for a clear prognosis for dear little Lucy! Best wishes to your entire family. I’m definitely a member of Lucy’s fan club! 🙂

Another fan of Lucy, wishing her a speedy recovery and all the best…she is so cute!

Was also wondering if the mouse she had could have been poisoned. There was an unfortunate event in our town where someone’s dog got sick from eating a rat that had been poisoned. Might be something to consider if it hasn’t already. Hoping for a speedy recovery for Lucy.

one of my dog’s had Addison’s. If that is the diagnosis and she requires med. you can save money by getting medication from a compounding pharmacy. I used ballardplazapharmacy.com

Pumpkin, over boiled white rice and chicken, all easy on the tummy.
Please hug her for us all-and my two silly corgis say “Woof”, I think that means -get well soon.
Sending good thoughts to you and your family

My Jack Russell had very similar symptoms to your Lucy and he was diabetic. He was on insulin twice a day the last two years of his life. It took a good three weeks to get his eating back to normal after he started insulin. I also started cooking his meals as the store bought dog food made him sick. I hope that Lucy has something far less serious!
Meredith says
Ask the vet about testing for Addison’s disease. Often mistaken for other illnesses and treated while pet continues to decline. Hope Lucy gets better soon!

Just catching up on your blog after a few days away………………So sincerely sorry to hear about Lucy’s illness and hope that she is feeling better soon. I know firsthand how stressful it is when our helpless fur babies are sick……
