Quote of the Day “I start every morning at 7 or 7:30 in the same place – my little office where it’s dark and cozy – with a cup of the same really strong black coffee. It’s my little cocoon. There’s no phone or fax or Internet. And no music.” ~John Grisham
Ohhh Wednesday. Currently humidity level: 97%. There is a giant mosquito bite on my neck AND my ankle {the worst spot ever to have a bite} and I need to get outside and pick the blueberries before the squirrels get to them. It’s survival of the quickest out here and I think I’m losing the battle. Gaaaaaa.
Wednesday. Let’s do this!
♥ Mavis

Isn’t it funny , you came from the Wild West coast , but you have more bugs and animals interaction on the East coast .
Any deer issues yet ?
Deer found my 2 year old orchard I planted
And I’m looking for ideas
Mavis Butterfield says
No deer yet. KNOCK ON WOOD.
Nancy says
Do you read Martha Stewart’s blog? She frequently posts about her garden. Granted, she has many employees working in her garden but she shows what they do to optimize the garden and protect everything from the wildlife. It’s great inspiration.
Traci says
You probably know this but don’t scratch the actual bite part of your skin – that seems to make the itch worse. I scratch all around it and that helps relieve the itch a bit.
Peggy says
You can put floating row cover over the berries too, it will help you win that battle!! My problem with them here are birds, they scout them out for just when they are ripe, but I tie the floating row cover in a loose knot around the bush (it comes in all sizes) and that deters them enough that I can get a good crop. 🙂
Nancy D says
A couple of years ago, I discovered that rubbing a deodorant stick over a mosquito bite takes the itch away! Even on the side of my foot yesterday!
Judy Zent says
Also, run a dry bar of hand soap over the bites. Works well.
Mel says
I highly recommend Benadryl spray for mosquito bites. A little goes a long way, but I’d still buy it by the gallon if I could.
Mavis Butterfield says
That stuff knocks me out though…. I try and save it for bee stings and the hives.
Renee says
I use a generic over the counter 24-hour allergy med like Claritin. Doesn’t knock you out but helps relieve the itchiness and swelling of bites.
Mel says
The spray knocks you out? Or the pills? I only use the spray.
Mavis Butterfield says
Pills. There is a benadryl spray? I didn’t know that.
Ellen says
A paste of baking soda and water helps me with mosquito bites…
S says
ha, ha, your description sounds about right with outdoors and gardening right now. The bugs, the bunnies (+squirrels, deer, woodchucks and chimpmunks) decimated an enitre crop in one sitting, the blasted huminidity that makes me now want to do anything. Wierd bugs emerge and the weeds go bananas. And yet … when we have a pleasant day or the tomatoes finally ripen = totally worth it!
p.s. I’ve had pretty good luck sparying plants with the nasty rabbit repellent you can get at Home Depot. It’s stinky (garlic, eggs), but really seems to do the trick when I remember to apply it. The spray bottle always clogs up, which is super annoying.
Helen in Meridian says
I am a super sensitive to bite itches. I scratch and scratch and scratch. A topical spray helps for a while, and if I put bandages over the bites, I scratch less. Maybe it was a spider and not just a mosquito, but some of those buggers can give large welts too.
Mavis Butterfield says
Oh no…. it’s mosquito.
bobbi says
Can you tell me what an Owl Pellet would be used for? LOL
Sorry about the bug bites…and bunnies. The sweet potatoes could be ok, maybe check on and see what it is looking like? I don’t have luck with Sweet Potatoes. Your girls are gorgeous! Mine are about 5 weeks behind yours and not that big, but they sure are pretty! I have an Easter egger, an Olive egger, a Rhode Isl red, 2 golden sex links and a barred rock (HBIC), lol. They are so cool. 🙂
Mavis Butterfield says
Kids love {or at least mine did} taking apart owl pellets and putting the skeletons of whatever the owl had eaten back together again on paper. It’s a great summer or rainy day activity and education too.
Gina says
This Florida girl says put some vinegar on bite or anything acidic (lemon) to neutralize the venom which is basic.
Learned that from my dr husband. 🙂
Susan from HI says
You might try rubbing ammonia on the bite. My mom used that on us growing up, and I still find it to be the most effective way to get rid of the itch.
Deborah says
Natural Bug Spray
“2 Minute Mosquito Spray with Essential Oils
Ingredients:
¼ cup cheap vodka or witchhazel
30 drops Tea Tree Oil essential oil
20 drops Pine Needle essential oil
20 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
30 drops Peppermint essential oil
40 drops Citronella essential oil
20 drops Rosemary essential oil
40 drops Sweet Orange or lemon essential oil
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon sunflower lecithin or vegetable glycerin
Directions:
Pour vodka or witchhazel into a 500 ml (2 cup/16 ounce) spray bottle. Add the essential oils. Add the lecithin. Cap and shake the bottle. The lecithin or glycerin helps the oils mix with the water. Fill the remainder of the bottle with cold water. Cap tightly. Shake well to combine. Shake before each use. Spray over skin, clothing, shoes, socks, or hair. This is safe for humans, dogs, cows, and sheep. Avoid using this with cats or pet rabbits.
If you want to use this for children under 5, half the amount of essential oils in the blend and only use 100 total drops. So instead of 30 drops of tea tree essential oil you’d only use 15 drops. Omit any oils that you or a family member has an allergy or sensitivity to.
These essential oils are effective against mosquitoes, flies, chiggers, and ticks.”
Sandra Guillemette says
silver buffaloberry or crab apples might be your mystery fruit
Candy C. says
I use coconut oil on bites and it stops the itch.
Jennifer says
Are there tiny white dots on the berries, if so, they are autumn olive. I live in west virginia, we have tons of them, forest ranger told me they are an invasive species. My chickens love them, my kids do too but they are terrible…sour and dry, but some people make jelly with them.
Gigi says
My mom picked up some natural lavender bug repellent made at a farm somewhere in the northeast. It was like a deodorant stick and seemed to work fairly well. We use an OTC after itch cream.
