Quote of the Day “Find joy in everything you choose to do. Every job, relationship, home… it’s your responsibility to love it, or change it.” Chuck Palahniuk
Hello Tuesday! On the agenda for today: Wait around for the oil company to show up and inspect the oil tank and fill it with heating oil. This will be the first time we’ve filled up our tank {the previous owners filled it up just before we moved it} and the current rate is $2.52 a gallon. I have no idea if that is a good price to pay for heating oil or not, but filling up the tank in the summer seemed like a smart thing to do as I would think the demand {and price} for heating oil would be lower now, than in the fall.
Do you buy heating oil? Do you remember what you paid the last time you filled your tank? Curious minds want to know. Oh, and the chicken coop…. We’re getting there. 😉 Hopefully I can get it painted in the next few days.
Ahhh Tuesday. Let’s do this!

Mav,
We prebuy propane for the entire winter at a locked-in price. Usually the locked-in price is lower. Ask if that’s an option.
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks Kristen! I’ll look into that. When the chimney sweep guy was here he said most people around these parts without a woodstove go through about a tank a month during the winter. He said he heats his home with wood and only uses 1 -2 tanks worth of fuel for the entire year. So hopefully, we’ll be able to do that too as paying $500+ a month for oil would stink…. big time.

I don’t know about heating oil prices, but our propane company (in Michigan) offers a summer promo price. They say its the cheapest of the year. They will even let you buy (and pay for) the propane now and they’ll deliver it when you need in in the fall winter. We use there metered service. We pay a $10 monthly fee for the meter, but then we only pay for what we use that month. We don’t have any huge bills to fill-up the tank. Helps my budget.
Sharon says
Brenda, may I ask where in Michigan you are? We live in the UP and are fairly new to Michigan 🙂

I asked my husband about heating oil and he said it’s generally 2-4x the cost of lp/propane. He also suggested looking into a new furnace or geothermal as it would save you in the long run. I know a few years ago heating oil was running well over $4 and lp was about 1.30. It’s going to vary due to oil prices.
Christine says
$2.52/gallon is pretty average. Pretty good price, we spend about $200/month in the winter for our tank (monthly delivery), but it’s cheaper just to do a monthly delivery service in the winter months (that way it’s never empty and the price isn’t shocking haha).

I used to work for an oil company. We used formulas to figure out approximate usage. I live in Northern Maine where it’s colder and winter is longer but this is what we used and it was pretty accurate. We estimated that each room in your house would use about 100 gals of oil and each bathroom 150 gals. That is if you were not using anything but oil. We would also estimate that 1 cord of wood equaled approx. 100 gals of oil. The formula might not be exact for your area but it will give you an idea.
Most oil companies do offer winter payment plans. They usually give 2 options: a prepay where you pay for so many gallons. If you use those gallons before winter is over, you just fill your tank at the daily posted price. The 2nd option is a budget plan. They guestimate how much you will use over the winter and spread the payments into monthly payments over the winter. There is usually some type of processing fee attached. Either way, you are usually given a price that is more than the daily posted price since they try to compensate for the winter prices. With the prepay you always pay what you contracted for. Good when the price goes up (the usual) but not so good if the price goes down (it does happen). With the budget plan you usually never pay more than what you contract for but if the price goes down you get the lower price–but there is the fee attached.
Please keep in mind that this year will be your first winter in this neck of the woods so your body will need to adjust. The humidity you are experiencing now does not really go away in the winter. It makes for a damp winter. You will feel that dampness right into your bones. You will feel more chilled until you adjust. Just makes for true reasons to enjoy a good cuppa tea by the woodstove!

We have a 500 gallon tank for propane. We use it for home heating & heating our water. We just bought about a month ago at $1.44 a gallon. If we fill the tank in the summer it usually lasts us a whole year. A few times we’ve had to buy in late spring after but when that happens we buy as little as we can then fill up again in August…..which we’ll need to do this year. We used more for heating last year than we meant to.
We’ve lived here almost 30 yrs & used to have a wood pellet stove. We’ve done the math on the cheapest way to heat & financially, wood, wood pellet & propane come out about the same. Since we’re in the empty nest we’ve decided the extra work isn’t worth the trouble.
Sarah says
My advice would be to buy now at a lower price and look into propane for next year. Propane will be much less overall and it’s more efficient burning. In MN one couple we know uses just 1 500 gallon tank of propane each winter, while another couple uses 2.5 tanks of heating oil. Just remember that propane will spike in price October/November when farmers are using it to dry corn and beans, and heating oil will spike in January/Feb.

My parents home was heated with oil, it used to be a deal to use oil back in the mid 90s but the price kept rising and rising and it was costing them $800 a fill about 3-4 times in the winter for a 2,500 sq foot house in northern Ohio. They switched to natural gas and drastically cut their heating costs.
Teri says
This seems like a bargain for a Blendtec. Do you think they are worth it over a “regular” blender?
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes! I feel like there is a huge difference.

I have to agree with searching out other options for the long run. Our first house was heated with oil in the 80’s and we ran out the very first night we moved in during a snowstorm! I was petrified that we would run out again. We measured (we marked with our trusty tank stick) and still not that reliable. Later found out tank had a slow leak and we were paying for contaminating our soil as well. I too love wood heat but only occasionally now. Research “mini splits” that attach to your walls for heat & air conditioning. I was first introduced to them in Alaska so ya know they throw out a heap of heat! Also widely used in Thailand for air conditioning too! They need to be hidden in some way to fit into your abode, but wow! such a bang for your buck! You will only need them in certain rooms (start with bedroom/bathroom first) but your lungs will thank you for preventing severe diseases from both wood and oil smoke off gassing. Try cleaning one area of your kitchen walls each month during the heating season and you’ll agree that it’s like smoking a pack a day inside with all of the contaminants…times 30….. times Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, March, April – that’s alot of $$$ up in smoke!!
