Quote of the Day “And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald
Hello Tuesday! Big excitement of the day…. Chimney sweep guy will be here to clean the chimney, sell me a wood stove thermometer and give us some tips. Giddy up! And because my husband STILL HAS NOT DECIDED ON A MOWER… I’ll be picking dandelions out of the lawn.
Pick your battles people…. pick your battles. 😉
Have an AWESOME DAY,
♥ Mavis

I say to make like a pilgrim and get some sheep to mow the lawn (food, fertilizer, and free lawn mowing). I’m sure the hubby will hurry up and buy a mower if you suggest that

Please leave dandelions in your yard! They are one of the earliest sources of both pollen and nectar for bees and other pollinators in the Spring. I highly encourage you to consider spending just a few minutes looking into why dandelions are important and leaving them to provide sustenance to pollinators.
UpstateNYer says
Agreed!
Cait says
It has never occurred to me to pull dandelions from the lawn, they are such a happy sign of Spring! Also, I just can not imagine spending that much time on something that will surely prove fruitless soon enough….dandelions will never give up! Plus this year I intend to make a big old batch of dandelion wine, and a teeny tiny batch of dandelion pesto to see if I like it. 🙂
Sue says
Dandelion pesto?!?! Recipe please? YUM!
Srj says
Omg. Leave the dandelions for the pollinators!
Idaho Girl says
I’ve heard the same thing. The bees need the dandelions!
UpstateNYer says
Coincidentally, this popped up in my feed today!

I made the recipe I found on your site for Lilac Blossom jelly (truthfully it just tasted like a nondescript sweet jelly – but I was glad I tried)….looking for other recipes, I saw one online for dandelion jelly – maybe you could make use of your blossoms? I would love to try but am having trouble finding ones that haven’t been sprayed in an attempt to irradiate them.

Are the dandy’s for the chicks? Have you had the young stems in a salad or sauté?
I do admit, the sight of them reminds me of my little boys ‘bouquets’! Sniff!!

Love the netting hat! I have lots pretreated netting to put over hats in a handy little pouch I bought from Amazon because of the black flies and mosquitos. And ticks. But I like MrsH’s better!
It’s greening up so fast here on my property and today my Husbond has the mower out to check on blades, oil etc. He bought a zero turn Husquarna mower as we have 1 1/2 acres of lawns. He absolutely loves it! He zips up and down, around and around like he’s in a race! Easy to care for also!
Next few days there will be major yard work going on. Today we cleaned our 100 year old cabin, took out all the dead mice, their poop and we are still missing a couple of traps! The squirrels take them. We have to patch a hole by the upstairs window where those rascals have chewed a hole and those dang squirrels chewed a hole in one of my really nice blankets that was on a bed! Curse you tree rats!
Today Mrs Fox came and stole the bag of sandwiches that my Husbond put on the picnic table. He went into the wood shop to get screwdrivers and a few screws, came out in time to see the fox run off with the bag in her mouth. So I had to make another batch! Lol!
We know she has kits somewhere in our woods because we’ve seen her enlarged tata’s when she sat and had an itch. We are looking into putting up a wildlife camera as we have a lot of wild animals come into the yard.
About 6 deer were snacking on our flower bed so now I have to buy plants and put the deer screens up around them again.
The peregrines are nesting on the old pier ruins and the seals are expected back in the next few weeks. The lilac and forsythia bushes are starting to spring out! I love when all the lilacs are out! Heavenly aromatherapy! My daffs and tulips are really about to open too! It’s an exciting time on the coast of Maine.

Wow sounds fabulous!

I, too, can not abide a tree rat. They will decimate your pecan crop before you know it. But, my mom FEEDS the things! Go figure…
Gigi says
You could save the dandelion leaves and eat them like the Greeks. It’s call horta or radikia. Wash, boil until tender, strain, add olive oil salt and vinegar to taste. Serve warm or room temp. I like to top with feta.
Julie says
I leave most of my dandy’s for the pollinators. The ones I do pull for esthetic reasons , I throw to the chickens and they gobble them up. Dandy’s are a good thing.

Mavis, the cinnamon rhubarb jam…OMG…it is the best and the easiest and it holds in the refrig forever. This weekend, I am going to spread it on the middle layer of a butter cake. best, Mary in Cincinnati
