Quote of the Day “I’ve learned that waiting is the most difficult bit, and I want to get used to the feeling, knowing that you’re with me, even when you’re not by my side.” ~ Paulo Coelho
Ahhh Tuesday. You’re here. Yesterday was spent clearing the {soon to be} corn and pumpkin patch and I think we’ve got it about 50% cleared now. Cleaning up the areas filled with vines and blackberry bushes is my least activity around here because the bugs can be INTENSE anywhere in the yard it’s not nicely manicured.
Also, I thought I’d take Lucy for a walk yesterday down our road and about a minute and a half into the walk I looked down and she had a bunch of black spots on her. Upon further inspection I discovered they were TICKS and quickly grabbed a stick and brushed 8 of them off of her. It was crazy. We ran back to the house as fast as we could.
The bugs here are no joke. Country life has it’s perks… but all the creepy bugs I could do without.
Here’s hoping your day is itch free,
♥ Mavis

I know you are using a professional tick medication on Lucy but also look into a repellant for her. I use cedar wood oil on myself and a quick google search says it’s safe for pets but definitely check first. I just mix it with with hazel although water is fine too, shake it up and spray!
Mavis Butterfield says
Thank you! We need to find a good repellent for her pronto.
Lindsey says
If anyone wants the recipe it is:
4 tsp witch hazel
8 oz water
15 drops lemongrass oil
30 drops cedar wood oil
All combined in a glass spray bottle
Mrs. C. says
Thanks!
Diluting the cedar oil like this is important.
Also, Mavis, be sure to check between all her toes and the underside of her feet, between the pads, as well.
Knico says
Be sure to carry a small flea comb with you on your walks and you’ll be able to comb the small ticks right off of Lucy’s coat and yourself before they have a chance to settle in. A microfiber towel catches them too. A bit of caution should be used when trying the cedarwood oil for the first time as there are dogs that are allergic to it.
Vivian says
Mavis, my sis-I’m-law who lives in MA says this is the worst tick year EVER! She can’t take her dog for a walk in the woods now.
Amy says
Does anyone have a trick to easily id ticks from weevils other than counting legs? My eyesight is not so good, especially when in “ick” mode.
Dawn B, of DE says
Hello – Just LOVE your blog. Glad you have joined us East Coasters…. I knew you would like it. Delaware has had a terrible start to tick season also. We check each other and the pups every night. I have only used Listerine mix/spray as a mosquito repellant. Does this mixture help with mosquitos too? Also, where do you get your cedar oil? Thanks for anyone’s input.
Lindsey says
I bought my cedar oil on Amazon . It is not good for mosquitos but lemongrass, catnip and citronella oils are effective.
Cedar is very effective for ticks. Cedar wood chips can be used in your garden and yard to keep ticks at bay. I’ve never tried listerine, sounds interesting!
Tracy says
Hi Mavis, After every walk with my dogs, but before going inside, I quickly comb my dogs thoroughly with a very finely tined flea comb. This gets most of the ticks off them while they’re still crawling on their fur and have not yet embedded. Also saves you from bringing them inside your home. And et me tell you, Lyme’s Disease is NO JOKE. I have friends who have had to put their dogs down from the associated joint pain, brain disease, etc. Most of us simply don’t let our dogs run loose in wooded areas any more. 🙁
Alison R. says
Dawn B of DE — what is the ratio for the Listerine spray and hat exactly does it repel other than mosquitos?
Thanks, Alison
Brenda P says
I saw Nancy posted this the other day:
Tick Repellent
Fill spray bottle 9/10ths of the way with regular Listerine mouthwash
Fill the other 1/10th with water.
Shake well and spray on your dog’s fur and your clothing.
Dawn B, of DE says
Yep. that is about the ratio that we use. Mostly Listerine and a little water. Thanks for the cedar chip suggestion. I did not even think about that one. We sit out under trees for heat relief and they drop right on us. A few cedar chips around where we sit would help tremendously.
