Last night we put the finishing touches on our fall decorations and I just had to share!! Normally decorating for fall {and Halloween} isn’t more than a few pumpkins on the porch for us.
But this house is a little different. It’s really in the thick of things and I told the HH when we bought it that we were going to have to go all out when it came to decorating for the holidays.
I don’t think he really believed me though. Or really understood what that really meant {in my mind}. HA HA HA. That poor man. He puts up with SO MUCH.
First, we had to procure the pumpkins.
There were multiple trips, to multiple farms {and even to Costco}. I think in the end we had gathered about 50 or so.
Then there were all the buoys. I mean, it’s Maine, right? You’ve gotta have a few wooden buoys. These were SO MUCH fun to make.
And of course what would Halloween be without a few bats on the front of the house. Okay, so 12 bats on the house. 🙂
The HH was able to hang all but one.
Long story short… He left to go run an errand, I spotted a line crew up the road…
And the next thing you know… The answer to the question of how we were going to hang a bat at the tippy top of the house was answered. 🙂
It was meant to be!
Remember that lobster rope I found washed ashore on the beach last winter? I’m telling you, it was like the stars were all lining up for this to happen.
How else do you explain black, purple and orange rope finding its way to you?
Wendle. The crow’s name is Wendel.
That’s it. I think we’re done. I think we’re done decorating for fall.
And oh what a good time we had. 🙂

How Cute!
Lesley says
PERFECTION.
Lesley says
Also: how did you hang the bats? (adhesive, nails, etc)
Anita says
I’d love to know how Mavis hung the bats too! I have a clapboard house as well and would love to know how to hang things on it without damaging the siding.
Mavis Butterfield says
The HH used screws.
Silke says
Oh Mavis, what a nice idea with the buoys!
Bonnie from GA says
I love your creativity! The grayish pumpkin with the sunken top is my favorite. 🙂
Shari Harniss says
I enjoy Halloween much more than any other holiday. So laid back, but fun.
I adore crows! I leave some out all year.
Ordered a tshirt from Amazon. Had two crows on the front with the caption ‘Attempted Murder’! Can’t wait to wear it!!
Mel says
Love it! We love Halloween, but we never get trick or treaters or anyone who would see decorations. Every year I put out pumpkin lanterns with candles and a bowl of candy just in case.
J in OH-IO says
Absolutely fabulous and you are so creative!!! Wow- it’s very eye catching with those black bats on the white siding and colorful buoys and pumpkins- spooktacular! Happy Fall, indeed!
Linda says
Of course, the guys were ready to help out the little lady!
Who cut your bats? I love all the pumpkins.
Melinda says
I love how the line crew was willing to help 🙂 Your decorations turned out perfect.
Beccah says
So cute, Mavis! Love that the line crew were willing to help. But will they come back in November?
Bonnie in GA says
If it’s not too far out, she might can grab it with something out of the window. Lol.
Mark says
The HH is now wondering if that line crew is coming back to take bat down too.
Margo says
That’s very cute and your garden is looking nice! No one can see our porch from the street and we don’t get any trick or treaters anymore, so our decorations are minimal these days. But we do have a new great grand baby who is a little too young this year for Halloween, so we may have to step up our decorating skills next year.
Courtney says
I love how you have taken holiday decorating to a whole new level with this home. I am sure it really adds to the charm of the neighborhood. I could read your enthusiasm and I love it. ❤️
Cheryl says
So unique! Love it! Awesome job! You are so talented!
Marie says
Have you seen the price of used buoys on Ebay? Plenty on there . Your decorations are perfect H H will have to tie a rope around your waist and dangle you out a window to retrieve bat or put a Santa hat on him. Love your new Home
Molly says
It looks so festive! You really know how to pull a place together fast. Wow!!
Linda Sand says
Is it a crow? Or a raven?
Nevermore
JulieP says
Do you have a rooks in the US? There’s a weird little saying in the U.K. countryside that basically means if it’s a big black bird and it’s on its own it’s a Crow but if there’s a group it’s aRook! 😉
Emily says
In the US, our crows like to flock together and when they do the whole group is called a murder.
Dianne Labadie says
You and HH bought a Saltbox! Love them.
Your decorations look wonderful! I love how the rope indeed does match the buoys. Like you said, “the stars were aligned”. I can’t wait to see your outside Christmas decorations!
Joanna says
Mavis, I must admit I am not one for bats HOWEVER, well done!!!!!
Beautiful!
NeeNee says
Only you could get the line crew to hang decorations!! That is so funny
But that one might have to stay year round! I LOVE the fence!!!
House looks great! Happy Fall
Trace Stavros says
Absolutely HALLOWEEN wonderful!
Kimberly Vassar says
Fantastic!!!
Annette says
I have a neighbor who hangs a giant black spider dangling from a tall street light. It swings around right over the street. Not sure how he hangs it up there but it’s fun to see.
Anne P says
Looks lovely
Tiffany F says
I’m not a Halloween decorator either, but this looks SO good!
I laughed out loud when you said you got the line crew to come hang the bat. I had to explain Mavis to my family.
Amber says
I absolutely love it!!! I’m going to need you to sell those bats in your shop because they are PERFECTION!!!
sandy says
The neighbors are going to love you. The white is perfect for your bats-was the house painted such a nice white or did you paint it? It looks so nice and perfect. Love the house!
Brianna says
Are you going to schedule to get your gutters cleaned in November or Christmas lights hung on the roof lines? I am sure it would be convenient and they might help with the bat removal.
JulieP says
House looks great a white back ground for those bats is perfect and well done on the line crew just what I would have done but the DH definitely not.
Diane says
50 pumpkins! Do you plan on eating them all over the winter? I know you always loved growing & eating winter squash in your other gardens. But 50 sounds like a lot to eat!
Sue says
Your decorations are gorgeous! I like the idea of a Santa hat on the bat. You could extend the theme and add hearts, shamrocks, Easter eggs, and flags to them!
All those magnificent pumpkins would be far too tempting for the tweens & teens in my neighborhood and would end up smashed in the streets.
Judi Y. says
OMG I love it sooo much! Great job! Also, your house is beautiful!
Jayme says
It looks so good! Will you be making a lot of pumpkin puree next month? How did you attach the bats to the house?
Anissa says
Absolutely classy and truly outstanding. I love how your vision came to life. Perfect!!!
You are a trendsetter and I bet your neighbors will be inspired!
Sherry says
Fantabulous decorations! I’d love to come TRICK or TREAT at your house!!!
Pat says
What is the plant around Wendel’s base?
Mavis Butterfield says
Ornamental peppers.
