First things first. Dinner cakes. Who knew these were a thing? When I saw dinner cakes advertised in the Market Basket flyer last week, I’ll admit, a HUGE smile grew across my face.
Finally, I feel vindicated. 😉
Moving on…
Costco $196.27
Guess what the HH bought last week? A BBQ. And well, guess the first meal he wanted to make was? Beef tips. Yep. We are back in the BBQ game again. Oh joy.
Fact: The blueberries from Peru were no bueno. Blech. Those were a waste of money. The multiple bags of Mediterranean crunch salad weren’t though. Man oh man I LOVE those salad mixes.
The HH cooked the steak tips, and made the mustard potato salad. My mother in law brought the salads.
My in-laws have moved to town. What!? Yep. They were thinking about selling their place in California, then on sort of a whim decided to list their property, and it sold {furnished!!} in the blink of an eye.
The buyers wanted to move in asap and in less than 3 weeks to boot and it was all said and done and now they are here {for the winter at least}.
Short term furnished winter rentals are super easy to find here in Maine, so hey, why not? How fun is that!
I LOOOOOOVE the big salads.
Trader Joe’s curry and rice.
Trader Joe’s frozen mushroom potatoes and green beans.
Trader Joe’s hatch chili mac and cheese. This stuff rules!
Mel’s no so drunken beans {and weenies}.
It was a good week. Lots of food, lots of craziness and now my mother is headed here for a visit too.
I think we’ll hang out in Boston for a few days before heading back up here to Maine. Life is very full right now, very busy. And that’s okay. I know winter {and soup season} is just around the corner.
So what’s been happening at YOUR place these days? Does YOUR local store sell dinner cakes too? Curious minds want to know.
Have a great monday,
~Mavis

I’ve never seen or heard of dinner cakes, but I’m all for it! Great week of food and visitors!

i thought the dinner cake would be some version of meatloaf with a mashed potato “frosting”. while i do love a good cake I’m a little disappointed ….

Wow…your in-laws left California….like so many people have been doing. My husband wants to leave California as well. But, where we live, I feel safe and love it here. How safe is it there in Maine? If you watch the news, it seems no where is really safe. I guess I need to stop watching TV.

Awe-I LOVE California-but often dream of moving just for a change. We are safe , (even after last weeks 3 huge fires surrounding us) good weather, great healthcare, so many beautiful places within driving distance-but change is good, and I am a Zillow lookey loo daily

I live in Oklahoma and we felt the same way about the blueberries0- looked good, but didn’t taste great.

I’m surprised there are no Maine blueberries up where Mavis is. We are still getting blueberries in CA. I don’t buy produce that has to be shipped that far away. It’s just not worth it (Melons in January, peaches in February). Better to wait for the right season when it’s local and tastes way better.

We have had those little cakes for at least 40 years. But, they are baby cakes for babies to smash. I bought one and had it frosted in white with hot pink rosettes and white piping. I used it for friend’s ‘reception’ since she married guy in courthouse and none of the wedding trappings. It was just 8 friends at my house. I bought a bride and groom for the top.

Babies get these on 1st birthday. This was in a bakery of a store.

How exciting that your in-laws are joining you on the East Coast!
Busy isn’t a bad thing, in my opinion, especially when it’s filled with good people, and lots of great memories are made.
I look forward to your resumed gardening adventures now that you are back stateside. 🙂

Off topic, but looking for some help. We are flying into Boston in less than three weeks for my husband’s business trip. We are coming in three days early so we can visit New England. Where is a good place to stay for a few nights and visit?
We visited Boston a few years ago and did day trips down to Plymouth and up to Kennebunkport area. So beautiful!

Did anybody else’s blueberries jump in price? When they go from local to South America, they will go up, but mine went from $3.74 to $6.94 in one week and they are HUGE!! Dh approved of the flavor at least.

I googled dinner cakes. It was very amusing. Lots of pictures of cakes that look like dinner. Best one was the Swansons TV Dinner.
Remember those in the metal pan?

We have “dinner cakes” at my local Market Basket. I have to stay way though because once i get them home my will power goes right out the window.
I’ve been craving steak tips. Now I have to get some for this week.

Stop&Shop has had 4-inch cakes (serves 5) for YEARS.
Not a new thing–just rebranded. ‘Now with more excitement!!’
