The weather is starting to get cooler, the leaves are falling, and the holidays are right around the corner. Pretty soon, it will become indoor weather, and in order to make it a little more bearable, I’ve decided to whip up my own air freshener. I can bring the scent of fall into the house, wrap up in a blanket with my computer, and settle in.
Homemade air fresheners are super simple, and don’t have the harsh chemicals that store bought sprays and gels do. Here’s how:
You’ll need:
- Half pint-sized canning jar
- Baking soda
- Essential oil {I’m using cinnamon, to bring in the holidays}
- Scrapbook paper {If not using Daisy lids}
- Scissors {If not using daisy lids}
- Daisy Lids for canning jars or a skewer {or something to punch holds in the lid of your jar}
Directions:
- Cut out a circle of scrapbook paper the size of the lid. The paper will replace the lid after you have traced it an cut it out.
- Fill your jar 1/2 full with baking soda and then add several drops {10-15} of essential oil.
- Place the the paper on top of the jar. Screw the band onto the jar {that will be enough to hold the paper on the jar}.
- Using the skewer, gently punch several holes in the paper.
That’s it. When the smell becomes faint, just gently shake the jar. You can add more essential oil too, as it fades. When you are ready to change scents, sprinkle the baking soda mixture onto the carpet and vacuum it up–like a homemade carpet freshener.

Good Morning! Love your posts. I noticed at the end of the post a link to edens garden oils. I clicked the link and was super surprised at how affordable they are. How do they to compare to other oil brands? There is tons of buzz about oils now but these are priced so affordable.

I know the baking soda fridge box last for one month before changing. I would guess these would be around the same time frame. Awesome idea! I think these would be cheaper than the fridge box which I use in my pullout garbage cabinet in my kitchen.

Great idea! I want to try these in the bathroom. Where did you find the square mason jars?

I was inspire 2 summers ago after reading your blog, to try a home garden. Your gardening tips are so valuable and your encouragement priceless. The first year, watching my first crop grow was exciting and a new feeling of accomplishment. I was amazed at the abundance of my fresh vegetable at harvest time. I enjoyed sharing them too. I had a fabulous first time experience and I am now hooked on gardening! This year I planted a garden for the little ones (3&6 years old) to nurture. It was priceless to see the awe in their eyes as they harvested their first crops, digging out potatoes, rainbow carrots and vegetables from their very own garden for dinner. Thank you so much. I love your post!
