Do you have kids leaving the house this year? For college? Getting their own place? I think a sewing kit is essential for any new grad–along with the basic know-how to sew on a button :). I put together a quick kit for The Girl so that she can make basic repairs while she is away. It was super simple, and it allowed me to add only the things I know she’ll need, rather than all of extras that come with a pre-assembled kits–space is at a premium after all.
Here’s a list of the basics you might want to include if you are putting a sewing kit together:
- A small box or container to keep your kit in
- Thread: An assortment of colors is best, but make sure at the very least, you have black, white, navy, red and a neutral color. Those should cover pretty most repairs.
- Needles
- Pin cushion with an assortment of straight pins
- Safety pins
- Scissors {I seriously recommend a small pair of Fiskars. They make the best cuts on fabric and will last a lifetime}
- Thimble
- Extra buttons
- Measuring tape {this one isn’t necessarily an essential for basic repairs, but if your student needs to know their inseam or they want to measure a hem, they will have one.}
That small list of items will cover most basic repairs, and hopefully prevent a pile of “mending” from coming home at Thanksgiving {though, don’t hold your breath :)}.

I am by no means a seamstress. I can pretty much replace buttons and repair socks/small holes in clothing. However, I took a little kit like this to college and it came in handy so many times! I even answered my door one day to find my friend holding up a white dress shirt and a lone button that had fallen off, he had no idea how to replace it. Your daughter will thank you one day for this even if it seems silly now. It’ll save her time and time again!

Hi Mavis!
I made a kit for my daughter and a friend of hers last year. It has come in very handy for both of them. You can see mine at:
