Costco $35.12
Are you a Costco shopper? Are they selling their rotisserie chickens in bags now at your Costco too? I guess the bean counters decided the plastic containers {the ones I love using for a mini greenhouse!} we’re too expensive.
Oh well. At least the price is still the same, $4.99. What a deal.
Trader Joe’s $28.82
I had an appointment in Portland last week and since Trader Joe’s was nearby, I had to stop. As soon as the weather cools down a bit I’m going to make Laura’s tomato and roasted red pepper soup again.
Fact: Trader Joe’s has the best avocados!! I’ve never gotten a bad mini avocado from them.
Costco $21.58
Another fact: The 2 pack of Dave’s Killer Bread is now $9.29 for the big loaves. I remember when I first started buying it at Costco a few years ago the price was 2 loaves for $4.99.
Grocery prices are up 20%… My arse!
It was another warm week here in Southern Maine and so of course we had a lot of salads.
The HH thought it was weird that I put blueberries in the salad but I was like… Seriously? The more stuff in there the better! Am I right or am I right?
I watched as he pushed all the blueberries from his salad aside AND THEN ate them all at the end. What a nutter.
Chicken caesar salad. The HH said tomatoes don’t belong on a caesar salad. Silly me. I had no idea there were so many rules when it came to salads.
Another day another salad. 🙂
Avocado toast. It’s pretty awesome. Even when you set off the smoke detector. I mean if BBQ pork can have a little “bark” to it, why can’t toast?
The HH thinks I burn toast on purpose… So every time I make toast he hovers over the toaster. It makes me crazy. Maybe for our 30th anniversary I’ll get him his own toaster and he can make his own toast in the mornings.
What are you supposed to give someone for the 30th year anyway? {I kind of hope it’s corn. I miss the corn}.
Pizza Pizza!
Ham sammie. Have you tried Famous Dave’s pickles? Oh my word, they are the best. There’s got to be a copycat recipe out there somewhere.
And hey, last but not least… Morning glory muffins. Or rather mini morning glory muffins. 🙂 It appears I left the regular muffin tin behind when we moved.
Note to self: Order a new {regular sized} muffin tin from USA Pans.
So how did YOU do this past week? Are you staying on budget this year? I gave up a loooong time ago. 🙂 Moving house and food budgets… They just don’t mix.

Yes, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and apples, can all go on salads! Colorful antioxidants and green leafies – the more the better! Yum!
Lynn says
I love blueberries but absolutely by themselves or in a fruit salad. NEVER in a salad with veggies. So funny you would ask this question because my husband knows how adamant I am about no fruit in a salad!
Julie says
I second this Lynn!
Dawn says
I love blueberries in a salad. I will also add mandarin oranges, strawberries or watermelon, slivered almonds or pecans and goat cheese and top it with a raspberry or champagne vinaigrette. MMMM! Of course, my kids think I’m nuts.
Heather says
I agree. These combinations are delicious. Adding just a little red onion, soaked in cold water first to take away the bite ,can be a yummy contrast to the fruit as as well!
Margo says
Of course blueberries in a salad! We can use fruit vinaigrettes, including blueberry vinaigrette, so why not use the fruit itself? There’s strawberry poppyseed salad with romaine and sliced strawberries that’s really good, so yes, fruit and salad play well together.
Tammy says
My daughter (15 years old) basically thinks that lettuce is enough for salad, anything like fruit, nuts, seeds, tomatoes….in her book do not belong on the salad. Haha
Lindsey says
I do not like sweet and savory mixed, in salads or any other recipes (so many Asian foods have a sweet sauce…) Blueberries belong in a fruit salad.
lisa in Maine says
I’m with you. Blueberries shouldn’t be in a salad like pineapple doesn’t belong on a pizza. Some things are sacred.
Barbara says
I’m with y’all too. No sweet and savory….unless it’s popcorn and m&m’s
Lisa in Maine says
Barbara- did we just become best friends?
B Hawkins says
Blueberries are perfect in a salad. I actually prefer any fruit in a salad to additional vegetables. I also use cottage cheese instead of dressing. People think it’s weird.
Wendy says
Dave’s Pickles are hands down the best! I like the spicy ones. I have not found another brand that comes even close.
Stacie says
I love fruit (berries, mandarin oranges, pears, apples) in salads of all sorts. I even use dried blueberries and dried cranberries in my homemade chicken salad.
Nadia says
All the fruit on salad. I’ve gotten my husband on board as well. Mango, strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, mandarin orange segments, pears (acocado and/or anjou, peach, well, you get the idea.
Faye says
I’m getting fed up with prices here in Seattle Washington. Safeway this morning had broccoli “crowns” at $2.49 a pound. With BIG stems on them! We have a Winco coming next year. I can’t wait!
Linda Practical Parsimony says
Chop up the broccoli crowns and put them in a salad or in things you cook. they are delicious. Peel first.
Torry says
Yes, but crowns aren’t supposed to have stems!
Jeri says
My Mom used to use the potato peeler on the broccoli stems, then she”d cut them up and add to salads.
In our home, our dog loves the broccoli stems. It’s a nice, healthy treat for her. Nothing goes to waste!
Cathy says
This week I made zucchini pizza! It was soooo good. Sliced zucchini with sauce, and cheese, and whatever topping – bake at 350 for 20ish minutes!
NeeNee says
Your Salads look great Mavis and I love cherry tomatoes on a caesar salad!!! Thxs for some new salad ideas gets boring after a while
Erin says
I’m curious…what kind of salad dressing do you use?
Dianne Labadie says
Blueberries, sure! You can certainly load a salad with fruit. I would only use a vinaigrette dressing. Apple vinaigrette goes well with a salad with apples, blueberries, mandarins, cranberries, pecans, feta cheese, etc. So does mandarine orange or lime vinaigrette, yum!
Lana says
Husband bashing. I hate that.
Virginia says
Unsolicited negative comments.
I hate that.
PamT says
Fruits, nuts, cheese…always make a salad extra good

Wendy Steele says
Do you have central AC in the new home, Mavis?
Mavis Butterfield says
Nope.
Shannon says
Blueberries belong in certain salads. Fruit salads of course and certain others perhaps with goat cheese or feta, some sort of nut or seed, and a vinaigrette. It matters what the salad is composed of. I have thought you put strange things together on salads for years. I hope that doesn’t sound rude!
Sue says
Fresh blueberries in a vegetable salad? Nope. It’s got to be dried, like raisins or cranberries.
Although I do enjoy mandarin orange in a spinach salad.
Add chopped red onion to your Caesar salad. Yum!
