You know those fancy beauty creams and regiments that cost a pretty penny but seem to work magic? Well I’m on a mission to find out if they really work!
I don’t use those fancy schmancy face washes or lotion potions. Actually, I don’t even wash my face at night {what?!}. So this is gonna be an interesting process, but…
A friend of mine is selling Rodan + Fields so I decided to give it a go. I know her well enough to know she isn’t going to sell something she doesn’t use personally or believe in herself. Rodan + Fields was created by the dermatologists who created ProActiv, but they geared this line towards adults, not teens. I’m going to be honest, the before and after pics are amazing, and her skin is flawless!
I am going to give this 30 days… which is about all I can handle. Hopefully the outcome will be good and my face will be one of those famous before and after pics. Ha! {I’m sure it will be amazing and she assures me it will be worth it!!!}
My beauty regimen as it stands right now it pretty freakin basic: Wake up, shower, put on random lotion, eyebrow liner and mascara. In the winter throw on some bronzer. Maybe. Live life then go to bed. I don’t even wash my face. Ever.
I think I’m the perfect guinea pig because if it can work for someone as lazy about their skincare as me, it can work for anyone.
I thought, what the heck. Why not give it a try. I mean I’m not 16 anymore and I’m not getting any younger. I suppose it’s time to take care of my skin.
I have a few problem areas I’d like to see some changes in, namely crows feet and acne bumps on the side of my eyes to my hairline. They’ve always been there and I have never been able to get rid of them. Also, another awesome feature of aging is the Pug-like wrinkles on my forehead. I won’t hate if those looked a little less pronounced.
So here we go. I’ll keep you posted on my progress and let you know if I think it’s the best thing since sliced bread.
I want to hear from you. What products do you use and swear by? Do you care way more than I do about your skin {it might be hard to care less than me!}? Have you ever tried Rodan + Fields?
~Mavis
Update: After trying Rodan + Fields for 30 days I did not see a visible difference in my skin. And quite honestly, maybe it works for some people. I wasn’t one of them. Putting all that stuff on my face every morning and evening was a major time suck and I have happily gone back to using my free hotel lotion {and other random lotions} on my face. For what it’s worth, my money… It’s staying in my pocket. And that’s my honest opinion.

Meh. Low income keeps me from fretting about my appearance too much – bills, gas, and food come first. But with my kids in their mid-teens, I am noticing time is leaving it’s footprints on my face more often these days :/
I do budget for a select few spendy premiums which I believe are worth it in the long run for my family – excellent quality coconut oil is one of those. I use a home-made calendula tea + coconut/virgin olive/jojoba oil (w/raw bee’s wax binder) on my face every morning after my shower – After my witch hazel/tea tree astringent and before my meager makeup (if any).
My mix hangs out in the fridge, which cools and refreshes my skin and keeps my oils in top shape. I’ve actually had this mix – used every day – for about 18 months. A little goes a long way, so a fingernail-sized clump is perfect. I also use it on other dry parts and on other family members, too.
However, I am eager to see how this experiment works out for you 🙂 I’ll be following, as always!

I have lived mostly in your shoes. I don’t typically wash every night or unless I’m a sweaty mess. However, I have problem spots and I want my skin to age better so I am trying the Oil of Olay Regenerist line. It doesn’t seem to matter what I try, hypoallergenic, sensitive skin, whatever…it always makes me break out more. So, it is working ok. But, if I miss a day I seriously break out and my skin is a little aggravated but there seems to be a lessening of wrinkles. I am interested in your progress!

I struggled with acne for years in my teens and early twenties. I thought about trying the Rodan and Fields line but went to a dermatologist instead. I tried ProActiv and even the sensitive formula dried out my skin (and I didn’t like that they upped the price after the first month) I don’t like taking medicine unless I absolutely need it though so my doctor said to try Cetaphil cleansers. It has done the trick! It’s pricier than your typical Clean and Clear, etc. but it works so well. If I break out at all its usually just one pimple around my period. I wash my face every morning and night and moisturize with a face lotion with SPF 30- its a habit I started when I was 12 with zits all over the place! I also only wear minimal makeup on special occasions (going to a get together, attending a wedding, job interview). My mother has beautiful skin in her 60s and she is a wash twice a day and SPF gal too so I think those two habits will prove to keep my skin clean and young looking.

Like you I am too busy/lazy to have a skin care regime. I sometimes wash my face, don’t wear make up unless I am going out, then it is mascara and lipstick only. I use either pure almond, apricot or coconut oil on my skin. I have had friends buy me expensive stuff but I never notice a difference anyway.
GOod luck on trying this, I can never follow a complicated regime so slapping on some natural stuff when I remember is the only thing I can cope with. My motto if you can’t eat it don’t put it on your body.

I do not wear makeup ever… I think the closest thing to makeup to hit my face is Burt’s Bees lip balm. About 8 years ago, I had to stop using Noxema as it dried out my face too much. I didn’t like the film that a bar of soap left on my face; so I switched to Aveeno body wash and that is what I still use on my face only. As a teenager, I stupidly thought that once I turned 20, the zits would stop…35 years later, I still get zits once in a blue moon. Mostly what I deal with now is the joy of aging: skin tags aka old age barnacles, brown spots, broken capillaries, moles that want to pop up in places that have no rhyme or reason…with all that, who cares about wrinkles or translucent skin?

I’m like you, I do not wash my face at night. I only wash it in the shower in the morning. Not much on makeup wear, either. I do use a moisturizer with sunscreen it in daily, and wear foundation in the winter months. The only makeup I wear religiously is lipstick cause I like it. 🙂 I’m almost 46 and I think my skin looks pretty awesome but that probably has more to do with genes than any product. Likewise, as I’m aging, some things are changing — little more sag around the chin and some tiny wrinkles but I’m OK with that.

Hi Mavis! I think I’m lacking the girly gene that makes some of us like makeup, shopping, shoes, etc… I do have to make an effort though, as my job (I’m an attorney) lends itself to dressing up every day. I wash my face in the shower in the morning with whatever is handy (bar soap, facial wash, just water, whatever), and then at night I splash it with a little water to get the makeup off. My makeup is very light. I dab concelear on my eyebags, a little powder over my face, and some blush on my cheeks. No eye makeup (it’s too much work for me to wash off at the end of the day). I do have one splurge that I swear by — Chanel lipstick. It’s extremely expensive, but it doesn’t wear off or dry your lips out like other lipsticks. They come in beautiful classic colors that never go out of style — no trends to worry about. I also think they plump up the lips and remove any lines or creases. love, love, love it. I get everything else out of the bargain bin at the drug store (yes, it probably shows), but the Chanel lipstick is always with me and makes me feel fancy.
Mavis Butterfield says
Well you are one step ahead of me because I don’t even own a tube of lipstick. 🙂

It is good that you have a man who appreciates your natural beauty and doesn’t expect you to wear make up, my man is like that too. I have friends who won’t go out of the house without their make up, think of the time it takes when you could be gardening or reading instead.
Also if you wear make up all the time you don’t look any different when you dress up to go out, at least when I do put my glad rags on and some make up people notice because I look different from my everyday natural look. I even have short hair that is wash and wear and my hairdresser knows that I have to have a no fuss, no product needed hairstyle.
Hooray for all us girls who are different

So happy to find i’m not the only woman in the world who doesn’t wash my face or wear makeup. Too many other things to do!

I don’t think any of that fancy face stuff really works. It just sits on the top of your skin, medically speaking. The chemicals that woud leach through, I am wondering how natural they are. Plain old olive oil is awesome for your skin, I think it’s called the oil cleansing method. Good luck! BTW Mavis, you have a lovely complexion!!

I have heard of Rodan + Fields Dermatologists and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the product! I would consider myself a product junkie and this is one of the best that I have ever tried. My personal results have been impressive. This is the one area that I take care of… because your FACE is always everyones first impression. I have a few pounds to lose (okay maybe a lot) but I can hide my body with my clothes – but not my face. I am almost 42 and when people ask my age they are always shocked that I look younger than I really am. I swear it is because of these products. THEY WORK – period! I started using them to support my friend (and she told me there was a 60-day empty bottle money back guarantee) I figured I had nothing to lose – now I am hooked. Ironically, I was just with my 44 year old sister last night who has struggled with adult acne (I mean BAD BAD BAD acne) for 20 years she has been in and out of the dermatologists office, tried lasers, medicine, EVERYTHING she has tried and it never went away! I told her to just try these products…nothing to lose. And HONEST TO GOD TRUE STORY in just 6 weeks she said she has NEVER said her been better!!!!! I went to dinner with her last night and I could TOTALLY 100% see the improvement (as well as my dad and husband). She swears it was the acne line (Unblemish). I don’t use this one – I personally use the redefine for anti-age. My motto is If you care about your skin (even just a little) and want to grow old nicely these clinical grade products are a MUST to help turn back the father clock a little. I would HIGHLY recommend…this is just my two cents! Can’t wait to see your results… (but truthfully don’t stop at 30 days… it will only keep getting better!)

I’ll be listening. I have used ProActiv for around 10 years or so, and now it doesn’t seem to be working as well. I started a new job last week, and I’m broken out like a teenager! Maybe I need something more for adults. I didn’t realize the ProActiv gals were developing a new line.
Amy says
I tried the same line as you are trying — the Redefine — and I loved it so much I became a consultant! Seriously, after a week my face totally brightened. With continued use my pores are smaller and my wrinkles are less discernible. It’s great stuff! And the opposite of complicated: they even have the numbers printed on the bottle. Can’t wait to see your results!
Cindy Brewbaker says
Ok – I’m waiting to see your results!! I guess whether the R+F regime actually works or not is immaterial, b/c it brought me to your site (via a “real results” google search). But hey, color me curious.
How does the skin look & feel after going from nada to a pricey, daily skin care routine?

I love my Redefine Regimen and eye cream! I too was a skeptic when I began using! I highly expected to return in 60 days and get a refund! But, I followed the easy daily regimen and began seeing remarkable changes in my skin! At 42, my skin looks firmer and my texture is smoother! With my eye cream my eyes look bright and my crows feet are reduced. My experience has been positive and I decided to be a consultant. My daughter uses the Unblemish and has had great results controlling her acne. I understand the products aren’t for everyone! But for me, it’s the only thing I will use.
Angela says
ok so this didn’t work out right? well… on to the next. I guess you just have to try the products and if they make you go crazy with delight you might want to try to sell them. I think selling is a mystery though, and I’ve never been able to make the rent with anything, even if it was great and i believed in it to no end. So, not only does one have to figure out if the products are really worth it, but to invest in it as a business as well. It’s not for every one.

Hey,
I jut found your blog, and would love to see your results using Rodan + Fields. Did you ever make a follow up post about it?
Thank you,

I found your blog searching about the results of Rodan and Fields and see you never even updated with your results. Would you please share what happened?

30 Days isn’t long enough to see results. You didn’t give it a fair shot, Mavis!

I used R & F for three months and didn’t see a difference. I started using Skin Nation because it’s much more affordable and a little goes a long way. I have Lupus and suffer from itching, skin rashes, and scalp sores the coconut oil is amazing and the skin firming cream keeps my skin soft and hydrated.
SayNoToR+F says
My son tried the Unblemish a few years back and when the product caused his face to turn red and burn, he went to a dermatologist who told him to stop using the product immediately. My son was never trained on how to use the product and even when he asked the consultant who sold it to him, she had no idea. We attempted to get our money back on the 60 day and they refused stating that he didn’t apply the product properly. Even tho I canceled shipment, they continued with an automatic withdrawal every few months until I finally had to contact the bank, showing my many attempts to get these charges stopped. Customer service with R+F was a nightmare and they are less educated on the products as the consultants.

no they don’t and they cost too much. WHAT A SCAM.
