I remember when we first moved to New England from Washington State a little over two years ago and being shocked at the amount of seasonal ice cream stands and clam shacks everywhere. I mean really, how was it possible to not only own a building, but to have a business in that building only open four months out of the year?
Was it really possible for all these little mom and pop businesses able to be able to earn enough in that short window of time to keep opening year after year?
Well apparently so, because seasonal businesses {and jobs} are a way of life around here. And the New Englanders I’ve gotten to know over the past two years, wouldn’t have it any other way. Four true seasons {5 if you count mud season} are the norm, and with each of them, there’s something special to look forward to.
And with summer… is all about the ice cream and lobster rolls.
And we absolutely LOVE it.
Last week while the HH and I were out driving around, we came upon Dunne’s Ice Cream stand while on our way to the Nubble lighthouse in York, Maine. We spotted the ice cream stand just as they were opening and decided that a scoop of ice cream would make a perfectly acceptable lunch. 😉
But then we read the menu… and really, why settle for a scoop of ice cream when you can order a wicked good banana bucket or a hot fudge sundae? I mean… we’re talking lunch here… we wouldn’t be eating dinner for another 5 or 6 hours so you know… might as well go all in, right?
Old school drinking fountains…. they totally remind me of elementary school and waiting in line to get a drink of water at recess.
Fact: Dunne’s probably has the nicest bathrooms of any ice cream stand on the planet earth.
Funny funny.
Sparkly clean… can’t beat that.
Outdoor seating, and PLENTY of it too.
I present… the wicked good banana bucket with 3 scoops of ice cream {strawberry, vanilla and chocolate of course} with pineapple, chocolate sauce, nuts and a healthy serving of whippity doo dah.
Both the hot fudge sundae and the banana split were FANTASTIC and we highly recommend them. And as a bonus, if you go for lunch, chances are you’ll still be full come dinner time so it’s really like getting two meals in one. 😉
Dunne’s Ice Cream in York, Maine…. add it to your list. You won’t want to miss it when you visit Maine.
Ahh summer, it’s pretty rad isn’t it?
Have a great day everyone,

My Uncle always said “If you want to know how clean the kitchen is check out how clean they keep the bathrooms.” I don’t know if that is always the case but everyone likes a clean bathroom.

My family moved to York when I was in high school. Love it. I spent many great summer vacations there until my parents passed away. Have you been to the Goldenrod and tried their saltwater taffy?

No, not yet but it’s on my list. 🙂

We love Dunne’s too but if you ever get to the Wells/Ogunquit area stop by the Scoop Deck. That is our all time favorite. When we went to Maine with the kids it was always our first stop… before we even checked in to our cabin!

You’re a Mainer now. It’s not a drinking fountain. It’s called a bubbler.
