Do you remember eating Chex party mix at your grandparents house when you were a kid? I remember my grandmother always making this in her huge enamelware pan each Christmas for everyone to snack on.
If you have never made real, homemade Chex mix before you need totally need to. The homemade stuff a way better than the junk they sell in the bags at the grocery store. No comparison, whatsoever.
When it came time to make this I didn’t have any pretzels or nuts, so I called up Mrs. Hillbilly to see if I could barter. I ended up giving her 1 package of deer chops for 1 cup of cashews, 1 cup of almonds and 1 cup of pretzels. I’m starting to run out of things to barter, and can’t wait until 2013 so I can go shopping again. Okay, here is the recipe, it’s super delicious, I promise.
Ingredients
3 cups Corn Chex cereal
3 cups Rice Chex cereal
3 cups Wheat Chex cereal
1 cup mixed nuts {I used cashews and almonds}
1 cup pretzel pieces
6 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons seasoned salt
3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Directions
Preheat oven to 250 degrees
In large bowl, mix together the cereal, nuts, pretzels and set aside.
Place 6 tablespoons in a large roasting pan and melt butter in the oven. Stir in seasonings, then gradually stir in cereal mixture until evenly coated.
Bake for 1 hour, stirring about every 15 minutes. Spread on Chex Mix on paper towels to cool, then store in airtight container.

This stuff is so Christmas Eve to me. My grandma would make a ginormous batch of it and all of us grandkids would devour it!

I put this under a different topic, but I’m going to put it here where it belongs. I have a friend that makes THE BEST Chex Mix ever. Her recipe is pretty much the same as yours, but she adds a couple dashes of Liquid Smoke (usually in the same area as Worchester sauce) & some celery salt. I don’t know what those ingredients do, but they send the Chex Mix over the top! I think I’ll make some this weekend!

I increase the Worchestershire sauce up to 6 tablespoons from the 2. The children like it better that way.

I made two different kinds yesterday and can’t stop eating it. I need to give it away!

My Grandma Weeks would make this back in the 50’s. She put walnuts in her batch. She would put a cup of mix in folded up wax paper. There was no saran wrap in those days. Then she tied it up with that curling ribbon. It was such an unusual taste back then before there were aisles of salty snacks. I have been thinking about it all week, and since I bought 10 boxes of chex, let the fat thighs and raw roof of the mouth time begin. Merry Christmas memories to all. How many of you had those little choir boy and choir girl angel candles that were put out each Christmas on the mantle? They had on red and white outfits. I found them at The Vermont Country Store and bought sis some for her birthday.

I just finished helping my grandma decorate her house for Christmas, which included the choir angel candles! They bring back such lovely family memories to me.

I make this throughout the holiday season each year. I always wonder why I don’t make it all year long because it is delicious…but I probably don’t need it the other 11 months of the year.

Mavis, why don’t you barter hiding all your neighbors presents at your house until Christmas, or offering to wrap neighbor’s presents in exchange for milk. Then put at least one gal. in your freezer so Monkey Boy will think you only have a quart. Also have Monkey Boy barter holiday labor for milk. I really like you linen skirt. Also thought you could have worn the green floral skirt with a white turtleneck and posed with a golf club for us on Green Monday last week.
