Market Basket $28.35
The HH was out of town for most of last week and so my big plan was to get a ton of stuff done while he was away.
And I did!!
I basically woke up, dyed wool, worked on orders, painted buoys and took Lucy for walks on the beach. That was about it.
No fancy meals, just the basics and if it wasn’t so nice and sunny outside I probably wouldn’t have even stepped outside. So thank goodness for the weather!
I cooked steel cut oats in the rice cooker for the first time and loved the texture of the oats so much that I had steel cut oats five days in a row.
Beans, rice, steel cut oats and avocado toast. I could live off of those four things. Some people really, really enjoy eating. They make an event out of it.
I could eat the same thing everyday and not be bothered by it. I wonder if it’s a mental thing. Maybe there is a part of my brain that’s wired differently.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I have been basically wearing the same outfit {boot cut jeans and black Gap long sleeved t-shirt} for the past 20 years.
Maybe there’s comfort in repetition. Or maybe it’s a sign of something {intensity? madness?} and being able to block out certain {boring} tasks {wondering what to eat, what to wear} and only focusing on what matters {to me}.
Maybe I’m just weird.
Costco canned chicken rules.
Freezer meals are nice.
Chips, salsa and guacamole is always a good idea.
And Heinz beans from a can are pretty much one of the best canned food products out there. Every time I hold a can in my hand, I want to rinse it out and start bean seedlings in it.
It was a good week. Easy food and art projects galore. 🙂 🙂 🙂
How about YOU? How was YOUR week? Did you eat the same foods over and over again?

I believe I have a similar rice cooker to yours – the zojirushi?- can you tell me what setting you used for steel cut oats? what ratio oats/water? I haven’t had much success but will keep trying!
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Tracey,
Yes, we have a Zojirushi rice cooker. Here is a link to the exact one I have: https://amzn.to/41CeADQ It’s pretty fool proof. I cook 1/2 cups of steel cut oats at a time. There is a mark in the inside of the bowl. I put my steel cut oats in, and then add water until it reaches the Steel cut oats .5 cup line and press the button. 60 minutes later the oats are ready.
The texture is PERFECT!!!
I hope that helps.

PERFECT oats this morning!! thank you!

I don’t think you are weird for eating and wearing the same things on repeat. I am the same. I think there are more of us out there too.

I agree 100%. In fact I’ve stopped shopping for clothes because I have more than I’ll ever wear out, and most importantly I like loose comfy clothes.
Can you tell us what more was in the canned chicken salad that you showed? Thanks Mavis.

Your food ideas look yummy. Do you have an article on avocados? I need help with knowing which ones are ripe, how to scoop them out, etc. It seems they are either hard or too ripe.
Nancy D says
Hi Bonnie….not sure if it’s true but my son worked several years in a produce department at a local grocery store. He says that an easy way to tell if the avocados are ripe is to only buy them with the little “button stem” still intact. When that can be easily rolled off with your thumb or finger it’s ripe. (He just told me the other day so I have yet to try it out) 😉

Thank you Nancy!! I will look into that!

I eat the same thing for lunch and dinner too! Whatever it happens to be will sometimes last for years. I don’t know what makes me switch but whatever I switch to will last for years too. I think it’s all those meals we make as moms and all the recipes we tried that weren’t great. Now that I’m older and alone, I’m just so over that. It’s also the simplicity of it all. It also helps me with weight control. I know what I’m eating won’t cause my clothes to get tight because I’ve eaten the same thing for years.

I have always struggled with the frustration of having to pick out a different outfit every day. Recently I have decided to follow Steve Jobs’ example and just wear wear basically the same outfit every day. I cleaned out my closets and rarely need to buy clothes anymore. I don’t feel bad about it at all because I’m not wasting my brain power on putting together the perfect, cute outfit every day. Apparently our minds are only good for a finite number of decisions each day. Why waste them on clothes?

eating has become a hassle….seriously. i could live on sourdough toast with honey, grilled cheese on sourdough, and grapefruit. i have no ambition or motivation to cook anything! is it my season of life (perimenopausal)? who knows. nothing sounds good, nothing tastes good…except toast! 🙂 LynneinMN

I wear stretch pants and my volunteer t.shirt every day but sunday as that is my day of volunteering and I get dirty handling all the food and flowers. However I love to dress to the nines if we go out to dinner which is about once a month, if we go wine tasting or to the theatre, I put on a fancy hat or fascinator and nice jewelry and even break out mascara and lipstick no other makeup. I really like to feel pretty and feminine when I go out with my HH and he dresses very nice too but my nice clothes last me many years. the rest of the time I don’t care and especially if I am in the garden.
Mavis Heinz baked beans are delicious and a reminder of home, we have baked beans on toast for breakfast at least twice a month. I love to cook so I do have a reasonable variety of meals and any extra’s feeds the homeless or senior neighbors.
PS, I was asked if could pick up a pallet of eggs frozen in their shells last Friday and of course I said yes, I managed to find people to take them all, intersesting when you freeze eggs in their shells they crack but I learned that though the whites start to leak out if they are in plastic cartons it doesn’t matter, the texture of the yoke is different but if you blend the eggs they are great for scrambled eggs, omelets etc, With the price of eggs lately it was great not to waste them

Just wanted to say that Grape Nuts Flakes are the best cereal ever. And happy birthday, Mavis!

That’s what the HH says too. 🙂
