Does thinking about how to keep salt from hardening keep you up at night? Have you ever gone to refill the salt shaker only to find your salt has hardened and clumped into a large thudding mass?
I used to just shake it, vigorously, until I needed to dim the lights and throw back an aspirin, but then a friend told me to put rice {just a grain or two} in my salt shaker to absorb condensation and keep the salt from hardening.
I did, and guess what? No more clumping–just smooth pouring salty goodness. Believe it or not, a wooden toothpick will do the trick too. I had no idea!
Learning. It never stops! I love it. 😉
Have a great weekend everyone, enjoy the sunshine.

I knew about the salt solution to lumpy salt. But, I don’t use it since I never have lumpy salt.

All our spices in addition to salt seem to get hard (very humid in FL) – garlic powder & salt, onion powder & salt, etc. I tried using those silica gel packs, but they didn’t work. The salt seems to really expand here and blocks the holes for the salt to get out. I think I will try the toothpick idea . . . or maybe do both . . .

Meant to say the “rice” really expands here (not the “salt).

Back in the day even diners and casual restaurants had rice grains in their salt shakers. My mom did it, too.
I use rice to scrub out the interiors of my narrow-necked oil bottles. Hot water, a dot of dish soap, a Tbs of uncooked rice, and swish away.

Wonder if the rice/toothpick would work for garlic powder and other spices?

In my entire life I’ve never had my salt harden. Not once! I live in the west, is that something that only happens in the east?

I live in Kansas. Never had problem with salt. We lived in Fayettevilla GA. for four years and we put rice in salt shaker. Also in sugar bowl. Works great.

Iodine is required to keep your thyroid working. If you are using non-iodized salt, be sure your daily vitamin includes iodine.

We never had a problem with salt hardening in Ohio, We do however have a problem with garlic and onion powders. I may try the rice or toothpick solution. Someone told me to keep them in the refrigerator and that seems to be working so far.
