We didn’t need to buy any groceries last week because we are still in eating down the freezer mode and our current grocery store purchases for 2023 are holding steady at $1099.61. So horary for that!
We are still waiting for our old appliances {including the refrigerator/freezer} to be hauled away so we are steadily making a dent in what’s in the freezer {the fridge is empty}.
In addition to the HH’s chicken noodle soup and some copy cat Panera black bean soup, I’ve been trying my best to use what’s in the freezers for meal time. This of course has made for a few strange meals, like serving an entire bag of frozen broccoli for dinner. 🙂
There’s also been a lot of frozen lasagna consumed as well.
And cookies too because I seem to have an unhealthy obsession with freezing cookie dough and we probably still have at least 10 dozen frozen cookie balls in the freezer. 😉
I did make a chicken pot pie with some of the potatoes the HH bought at Costco last month and some canned vegetables to give us a little break from the freezer meals.
And there were some pickety bits too. 🙂
Oh, and while we were out and about running errands last week, one of the stores we stopped at, unbeknownst to us, was having a customer appreciation event so we enjoyed a free lunch of BBQ burgers, weenies, chips and cookies!
How cool was that?
So overall things in the grocery department here at Casa De Butterfield are going pretty smoothly. We didn’t buy anything, and really, other than the chicken pot pie and slicing a few pieces of cheese, we didn’t have to make anything either.
Eating down the freezer mode, I could get used to this!
So how did YOU do last week? Did you find any deals at the store? Curious minds want to know.
Have a good one,
~ Mavis

We found a great deal on chicken leg quarters (legs with thighs attached) at Walmart. 10 pounds for $4.72! There were 9 leg quarters in the package, and they were over a pound each. So, each leg quarter was only .52 cents! My hubby loves those (I am more of a wing girl). I am now wondering if I should have gotten a 2nd package . . . (I will check on Thursday when I do the grocery shopping to see if they still have them.)

Eating down the freezer sounds fine to me! I made refried beans from a bag of Rancho Gordo cranberry beans and we had tostadas (used some past their prime corn tortillas) a couple of times. My husband has been making himself breakfast burritos every morning using leftover refried beans, scrambled eggs, cheese and lots of salsa….doesn’t take much to make him happy.
I got boboli pizza crusts and my husband made a boboli pizza for us Friday night. We watched a movie on Netflix (A Man called Otto) and ate Red Vines for dessert…who said the best nights cost a ton of $$$…not me…
I was at Costco yesterday to get Charmin toilet paper because it’s on special this month (they were out..boo) and I noticed the Craisins were $4 off so when I go back to try again for fancy toilet paper (my daughter’s favorite) I will get the Craisins also…they are the best in oatmeal and I will make some quick breads for Christmas gifts for the neighbors.
Have a great week!

I have read that the Costco brand of toilet paper is made by Charmin.

No ‘deals’ in my grocery spending. I buy organic: gr beef, chicken, gr turkey at Costco last week. If I want organic, it costs what it costs. Red bell peppers aren’t on yet at market or my garden so grocery store was $2.16 each. Organic garlic $6/pound. I won’t tell you what I spent because you might faint. I’ll just say near $400 to stock up.
I did make 11 quarts of killer Ratatouille yesterday. From the garden: tomatoes, squash, eggplant with the rest purchased. This is soooo worth the 7 hours it takes so I do a triple batch in my 11quart stockpot.

Would you share your ratatouille recipe, Elle?

Here it is! I did learn quickly to pay attention to his verbs and adjectives. Giving up it’s oil? Yes, it’s a thing!
I aim to make enough to get us through to the next year’s harvest. I freeze in 1 quart containers and then vacuum seal the bricks. I Italian spice some and leave some plain. It’s a fantastic Chili base!
ENJOY 🙂
Pauline in Upstate NY says
Thanks so much, Elle! I’ll look forward to trying this while we have the summer bounty of the vegetables!

We are still eating out of my freezers as well. This last week we ate spaghetti bolognese (made from beef and pork soup bones), ham, ham, and more ham. Did I mention ham? We had a nice 12 lb ham in the freezer, so I cooked it up! Ham sammies, ham and potatoes, ham salad… I think I’m done with ham until the cold weather sets in. I saved the bone for white beans and ham. Trying to eat down the freezer before we move (less than 3 weeks to go). This week it’s going to be italian sausage stuffed acorn squash with leeks (from the garden), tacos/taco salad (lettuce from the garden), sliced pork ranch flautas, chicken bacon ranch casserole, leftovers and fend-for-yourself night. Have a great week!

That sounds like an appropriate amount of cookie dough balls to have in the freezer. Just sayin’ 🙂
Maxine says
Is there a trick to freezing cookie dough? Mine seem to dry out faster after baking?
Carrie O says
Following because I just realized the same problem!
Kath says
Do you have a recipe for that chicken pot pie? It looks simple and delicious!
Kathy says
Mavis, I feel like freezing those cookie dough balls is a HEALTHY obsession because if it was me, I would have baked up the entire batch and eaten them all, lol!

We need to eat down our freezer as well- some stuff is turning icy! Mavis, have you thought about selling some cookies at the road side stand or is that not done in Maine?
Mavis Butterfield says
I think I’d rather just eat them over the next few weeks. People do sell baked goods on the side of the road all over Maine though. 🙂

Our best deal was six 24 oz pkg of thick bacon for $3.35 each.
