I need a new book to read. The problem with me and new books is that I devour them in like 2 days. And then now matter how good the book is, I immediately need another one to read. Which is a good thing I suppose, but still. I need a new book.
I read The Orphan Train last month {and it was excellent}. Do you have any suggestions?
Oh, and the 7 days of sunshine forecasted for this week? Ha! It rained yesterday and this morning as I look out my window the skies are looking mighty grey. Humph!

If you like historical fiction Philippa Gregory is an excellent author. I also enjoyed “Saving Ceecee Honeycutt” and “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society”.

I just finished the Kite Runner and loved it! I also enjoyed Wild, Gone Girl, and The Bloodletter’s Daughter. I haven’t read Orphan Train yet, so thanks for the suggestion!

Since you seem so attached to Lucy the puggle dog, I suggest these 🙂 “A Dog’s Purpose” and “the art of racing in the rain”
I am a dog person to the core and I loved both of these

Have you read Sue Grafton’s alphabet series yet? A is for Alibi? I think she’s up to V or W now. They’ve been around for forever but I didn’t read them until recently. They’re a rather “light” read but have an enjoyable main character throughout the series. I also like Elizabeth Lowell’s books. I think she got her start writing romance novels but has evolved into a pretty good suspense/mystery author. I just finished reading the Silo series by Hugh Howey. It’s sort of a futuristic nuclear end of the world type series that was pretty interesting. And if you REALLY want to dive into the deep end and haven’t already done so…..you can’t beat the Game of Thrones series by George R.R. Martin.
Louise says
Word of warning…..Game of Thrones is addictive…..you might not get much gardening done until you finish all 5 books….and you still want more.

I’m in the middle of reading ‘The Book Thief” right now. I hate putting the book down!
Carol says
I really liked The Book Thief, too. A movie has been made from this book. Interestingly, it’s almost as good as the book!

I just devoured “where’d you go Bernadette” it’s set in Seattle which is kind of fun for us north westerners.

Have you read “The Omnivore’s Delimma”? While at the doctor’s office, I was reading “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” (from your ‘review’ recently) and a lady in the waiting room suggested it. I haven’t gotten to the library yet to get it, but am looking forward to it.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yep! It’s a great book.

My cousin sent me this email just this morning and since you have a dog too, I thought you might be interested.
I just read a book today that I thought you might really enjoy. It is called DogTripping by David Rosenfelt. It is about he and his wife who rescued golden retrievers in Southern California. They also rescued other dogs that were considered unadoptable and took care of them as their own. A part of the story is their move from Southern California to Maine when the wife retires….what a journey. But it is a funny, heartwarming and heartbreaking book.

I just finished “All the Dancing Birds” by Auburn McCanta. It is about a woman’s journing with Altzheimers. It was free for Kindle on Amazon. Even though it was kind of sad I really enjoyed it.

sorry..the word is journey

Books! Well, not really knowing your type, here is a random list:
Lord of the Rings; Man’s Search for Meaning (nonfiction, written by a Holocaust Survivor), Till We Have Faces (fiction, by CS Lewis, I read it every year), Gilead (fiction, great book), The Boys in the Boat (nonfiction, about the Olympic crew team from UW that went to the Olympics held in Nazi Germany), The Language of Flowers (fiction, not my usual style, but loved reading about the meaning of flowers), The Power of Habit (seriously great nonfiction book). I agree about the alphabet series by Sue Grafton, and I really enjoy the mystery series by Martha Grimes. And if you like historical fiction, I highly recommend the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O’Brien. I have read the series a few times — fantastic character development!
I am able to check out books on my kindle through my library. It is great!

I just got the Boys in the Boat and am looking forward to reading it. Another local story which I love.

Have you read Jamie Ford’s “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet”? I just finished another one of his books “Songs of Willow Frost”, both are set in Seattle and are books you can’t put down. Right now I’m reading “A Tale for the Time Being” by Ruth Ozeki about a diary found in flotsam off the coast of British Columbia, probably flotsam from the Japanese tsunami. Excellent reads all of them.

O.K. You have a gazillion suggestions already but here’s my $1.00 (not 2 cents after you see the size of this book!) I finished reading “And Ladies of the Club” a month or so ago. It is EPIC! You won’t read it in 2 days, believe me…..but it is nevertheless charming. I really enjoyed it. Read it voraciously. It is by Helen Hooven Santamyer. I got it from the library but because I knew it would take me forever to read, I found it on Amazon and paid the penny for the book and the $4.99 shipping happily. It’s set in 1860’s through 1920’s and is just about the people of a small town in Ohio. Charming!
Allison Aplet says
I am reading a great book. Try The Autobiography of George Muller. You will be amazed Mavis!
Carol says
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce is the best book I’ve read so far this year. My second choice is The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. I just picked up The Orphan Train yesterday, so it’s nice to read that you enjoyed it.
Kellie R says
Hey, Mavis, if you haven’t already, try Laurie King’s Mary Russell mystery series. Her stand-alone novels are good, too. Also, Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisy Dobbs series is very good. Both series are set in England (not that that would interest you 🙂 ) in the WWI timeframe. It’s always nice to have a good series to read…you don’t have to go to the trouble of finding another book to feed your addiction.
Delores says
Yes! The Mary Russell series is good!
Veronica says
I’ve heard good things about Elizabeth Gilbert’s newest book “The Signature of All Things”. It’s about a female botanist in the 17th and 18th centuries.
HunnyWest says
I would recommend Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman. It is about a 12 year old girl who has a tragic life with a mentally disturbed mother, and a disengaged father. At the dept of despair and grief she ends up in Savannah Georgia living in a colonial mansion, surrounded by beautiful gardens. It is a real feel good novel despite it’s tragic beginnings. It is a Kindle book and is free downloadable ebook from your friendly Pierce County Library System. 🙂
