Last night the Girl Who Thinks She’s a Bird and I locked Lucy the Puggle Dog in the house and brought the baby chicks on to the lawn to snap some pictures. Poor Lucy, she was hopping up and down trying to get our attention the entire time. 😉
Blue Laced Red Wyandotte #1
This is the first time we have not kept baby chicks in the house or the garage. Instead, this time around we set the chicks up in a stock tank and clipped a heating lamp to a wire rack and then weighted the top down so any wildlife couldn’t get to them.
So far so good, they are thriving, and the HH is happy they are outside.

I’m not sure if there is a mean girls club beginning to form but 6 of the chicks like to hang out together while the other 2 seem to stay at the opposite end of the brooder.

I think we have another glamour girl on our hands. Aren’t her eyes pretty?

We originally names this one chippy because she had the coloring of a chipmunk. But we may have to switch her name to possum because if you pick her up {or set her down} all the sudden she gets real stiff and just hunkers down and won’t move. It’s odd.
Buff Orpington
I just noticed little ridges on the top of this chicks comb. It better not be a rooster.
Cuckoo Maran
I LOVE the coloring on this cuckoo maran!!! She looks like a little penguin.
The Girl calls this on Jabba the Hut.
And this one, espresso.
Why? Because as soon as we set her down on the grass she took off running. It took up over 10 minutes to catch her. What a little stinker! I can tell already this baby chick is going to be a little trouble maker.
But man is she cute.
I don’t know about you, but I LOVE baby chicks! I think I might like them more than I like eggs. 😉

P.S. We are still in the process of naming the chicks. {4 are ours and 4 will go to Girly Girls kids once they get a little bigger}. So if you have any suggestions for names, I’d love to hear them.

The cuckoo maran should be named Bandit…looks like she’s got a little robbery mask on! 🙂 They’re adorable! We just moved to a farm house in the country (now instead of a 4X4 patch of fake grass, we have 3 acres!!!!!!) and we really want to get chicks this spring! We are in IL so we aren’t going to try to get them now, but really…we can’t wait!

Haha, the title reminds me of when I went to the post office for mine. I walked in and went to the counter and said “hi, I’m here to pick up some chicks.”. No joke, I can’t believe I said it. Then the guy walked back out with them carrying them like a ticking bomb. LOL, it was so funny!

I love our Cuckoo Marans! The eggs are pretty awesome too. We bought 6 hens and 1 male…We ended up with only THREE hens and THREE males. All of our males had that distinctive yellow spot on their heads. Needless to say, we only have one rooster left, Hamm, and know what to look for next time we order some chicks from the feed store. No more picking them all “willy-nilly” like. Now we know. 😉 But, I am sure your chicken will be just fine.

Oh no! I hope your Buff O is not a dude. We have two blond Buffs hens, they are so sweet and beautiful. They are like the Golden Retrievers of the chicken world.

True story…..reading the article and my 5yr old who is our “chicken whisperer” comes up and is looking at the pictures of the chicks and points to the Buff and says, “is that a boy chicken?” I asked her why she thought that, and she said, “look at his head, its different”. She can’t read yet! Funny stuff!

adorable babies…….. makes me want to go get more. We hope they are all girls. We ended up with 4 roosters in the first round of GIRLS but luckily we found a nice country home for them with lots of girlfriends to be had. What about “Glory” for one of the blue laced red wyandots? (kind of like red white blue for the flag ol’glory)

I also wanted to know if you knew anyone who was interested in buying a gently used green Eglu Go with the attached run? I live in Shoreline (north of Seattle) and we built our three girls (Buffy, Phoebe and Miss Heidi) a fancy new chicken mansion that I have dubbed Le Chateau de la Cluck! The coop is still in great shape, just the feeder/waterer and run shade cover are a bit sun faded from doing their job over the past 18 months we have owned it. Hopefully we can find it a new home!
