Last week One Hundred Dollars a Month reader Peg left a comment about a movie called Maudie. Peg said she watched it three times in 48 hours and so with that kind of recommendation, of course I had to check it out.
The movie Maudie is based on the true story of folk artist Maud Lewis of Marshlltown, Novia Scotia. Maud was born with birth defects and later developed rheumatoid arthritis, which reduced her mobility later in life.
She lived at home until she was in her 30’s {when her parents died} and then after a short stint living with her Aunt, Maud eventually met, and married a local fish peddler, Everett Lewis.
And basically, Everett was a bit of a crusty fellow. 😉
Without giving anymore of the story away, I want you to know this movie, Maudie, is BY FAR the best thing I’ve seen in a loooooong time. And I’m not embarrassed to stay that I too, have watched it 3 times now {yes it is THAT GOOD!}.
You need it watch this!
So a big high five to Peg for recommending this movie. Well done. And keep those movie recommendations coming. 😉
Let me know what you think if you decide to watch it–or if you have already seen it.
Have yourself a great weekend,
~Mavis

Loved Dear Frankie!

I’ll definitely watch Maudie – sounds wonderful. My recommendation is “The Personal History of David Copperfield” – released in 2019. It’s a British film (I’m British); engaging, funny, fresh. I don’t normally like costume dramas, but I loved this.

I just checked and my library doesn’t have it! Sad day… but if it really is that good, I might use my mom’s prime to rent it.
Christa says
It’s a favorite movie of mine, love Maud’s joyfully simple art and some of her works have been turned into rug hooking patterns.
Lana says
‘Still Mine’ is one of our all time favorites.
Mavis Butterfield says
Loved that one!
Jenny Young says
I love this story. I watched it years ago.

Oh, this looks wonderful! Thanks so much for the recommendation. I’m hoping one of our local libraries has this.

My top movie recommendation right now is “The Farewell” (on amazon). Such a sweet, thoughtful, funny movie — based on a true story that was highlighted a few years ago on This American Life. Akwafina is really, really good in it!
Lori N says
I loved that one too! Funny and sweet.
Peg says
I’m so glad you liked it! Thought you might. Still think about it, and I love your description of her husband!

I wanted to leave another high recommendation for “Enchanted April”. I make a point of watching it each January to kick the year off right. It’s a very inspiring movie that has a wonderful cast.
Hope everyone has a terrific weekend!

Yes, me too! I make a point of watching it in February or March, when we are impatiently waiting for spring. Great cast, wonderful scenery, and gentle storytelling.

The CBC has an excellent weekly show called Land and Sea. As I recall they did a story about Maudie and showed her actual cabin/home and stated it is a museum now.

Just watched “Promising Young Women”-whoa-should be required watching for all males from 17-25 and all fraternities.
Nomadland is by far my favorite as far as Oscar contenders ( my FIL gets SAG/AFTRA screeners so we get them after he watches them) Yay us!
Love “Land” by Robin Wright too-but hold on to your hat and have Kleenex near by.
Happy Friday and make some popcorn!

I watched this with my wife and enjoyed it. Crusty is a great word for the husband. Thanks for the recommendation.
Cheryl says
I agree Maudie is excellent! She had such a hard life but such a strong spirit. Definitely one worth watching again.
Anne says
I have watched it and it is an awesome movie! A lot of rug hookers recommended this to me because a lot of her artwork has been turned into rug patterns. She is quite the inspiration! A movie I love that is an older movie and I’m not sure you can get it anywhere but it’s called Hopscotch and it’s stars Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson. That is a really great movie.
Judy says
I LOVE this movie, especially at the end when they show the real Maudie and her husband.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes! I loved that too and was wishing they showed more footage.
