As soon as we get back from our trip, The Girl and I are going to start the Masterpiece Classic’s, Mr. Selfridge. Since, I admit, I am a sucker for all things British, I’m not too worried that I won’t love it. It’s about an American business man set on opening up an upscale department store in London. It’s free on amazon prime, and getting great reviews, so it pretty much fits all of my requirements. Hot dog.
Have you seen it? Did you love it? Hate it?

Love Mr. Selfridge. Keeps your interest and shows the American/British differences nicely. Not to mention great accents and some loveable characters.

We got hooked the first Sunday after Downton ended last year. We are looking forward to the new series in another week. We didn’t discover Sherlock until this year. I will have to check Amazon to get the previous years of Sherlock.

I was really excited when this show first came out. I tried to watch it but it came across a little trashy. Think it was focusing on a story line about an affair. I’m not really into that kind of story line. Maybe it gets better, please let us know.

Are you going to go see Selfridge’s while in England? I love that series! I’m now watching Call the Midwife which starts a new season in March.

We don’t have time but I have seen people walking about with their yellow bags. Maybe next time. 🙂

Funny you should mention it….Tomorrow my husband and I will be putting the deposit down on our new house.
The builder representative handling our account is British. (Adorable accent, don’t you think?)
Anyway-I was wondering if you can help me with an etiquette issue.
Is it proper to refer to that country as “Brittan” or the “UK” ? I don’t want to offend and was thinking about asking him (the builder) and if you can tell me it might save him some embarrassment, at the very least avoid an awkward situation. Thanks.

You can say Britain or the UK, neither will offend him. You can also refer to him as English/Welsh/Scottish or Irish, depending on where he comes from. Brits come from the British Isles, which is made up of All of the above countries (northern and southern Ireland) whereas the UK is just Northern Ireland. Hope this helps, I know that my students (I live in France and teach English) are sometimes confused and don’t realise that there are several countries which make up ‘Britain’.

Gosh – not often I can be an expert in something ! However, being English, I can confirm that we’re generally happy to be described as from Britain or the UK. The problem may arise if you describe someone as Scottish/ Welsh or Irish as English or vice versa ….there’s a great deal of history there.
Hope you had a super time in London – I know it may not seem like it, but you missed the worst of the winter rain and wind ( told you I was English …. Weather obsessed !)

We are having a blast! Love it here. 🙂

It’s very similar to The Paradise, but better. Mr. Selfridge isn’t one dimensional. Yes he’s a womanizer, but for all his flaws he’s still likable. It’s based on the real Mr Selfridge’s life.

I loved the first season and I’m really excited for it to come back. Jeremy Piven is a great actor and he seems like he is having a lot of fun with this role.

I love it. The costumes and everything! Based on a true story, he really cared for his people. x

I love Mr. Selfridge on ETV and wished that we had gone to Selfridges while we were in London. I know that we walked right by it several times. I saw recently that the original Art Deco Elevator Doors that were installed in the late ’20’s are at the Museum of London.
