I stumbled up upon The Durrells in Corfu earlier this week and am ABSOLUTELY in love with this show!!! “Based on naturalist Gerald Durrell’s much-loved trilogy of novels, The Durrells in Corfu sees impoverished but sparky widow Louisa Durrell (Keeley Hawes, MI-5) make the radical decision to leave 1930s England to seek out a new destiny for her family.”
The 6 episode season is currently available with Amazon Prime and there is a season 2 in the works but a release date has not been set yet. Go watch it. It’s awesome.
Let me know what you think if you decide to watch it–or if you have already seen it.
Peace out Girl Scouts & have yourself a great weekend,
~Mavis

Another good series is Home Fires. It’s a PBS masterpiece series about a group of women in a small English town right as WW2 is breaking out.

Saw it and absolutely loved it! So glad a second season is in the works. Just finished “A Place to Call Home” all except season 4. It is really good too. It’s also on PBS but I couldn’t wait a week between episodes so I got it from the library.

Loved it also! The books are really fun too.

Loved this and can’t wait to see the second season. I read the trilogy before watching the series and they were both excellent.
Mavis, I just finished reading an incredible memoir and wonder if you might read it and consider featuring it. It’s not on Kindle yet but is on Amazon and of course can be ordered by any bookstore even if they don’t carry it at this time. It is “Hazard: A Sister’s Flight from Family and a Broken Boy” by Margaret Combs. A beautiful, poignant story about growing up in the 1950’s and 60’s with a severely autistic brother – long before autism was understood at all – and the effect it had on the family, told from the sibling’s point of view. Very compelling.
Thank you for your wonderful and fun insights and discoveries Mavis. You are my bright spot every day :).

I’ve see a few remarks about Home Fires on PBS. my son love these period movies, so I think we may be settling down with it.. if any of you have found programs you enjoy on pbs, netflix or hulu, please share. We don’t have amazon yet. I did get to see the crown and quite enjoyed it. Tonight I watched Midnight in Paris on netflix. It was very good. one I will ponder over for a while.
