Okay, so this isn’t a movie but oh my word, if you have not discovered The Great British Baking Show you are seriously missing out. I remember hearing about this program last year at my friend JJ’s house. She was raving about. But I was like, eh… another cooking show? How many times can you watch somebody cook something. No thanks.
Well a few weeks ago The Girl and I were looking for something to watch on Netflix and The Great British Baking Show popped up on the screen. We decided to give it a try. And now we are totally hooked. And so is my {usually non tv watching} husband.
The British and their tv programs. They sure do get them right. There is nothing loud, flashy or game show like in the filming of this program {like you’d see on The Iron Chef} it’s calm, informational and truly a pleasure to watch. And hey, if you have Netflix, seasons 1-3 are available right now to watch.
Let me know what you think if you decide to watch it–or if you have already seen it.
Peace out Girl Scouts & have yourself a great weekend,
~Mavis

This is one of my favorite shows. Have you watched Escape to the Country ? It’s a British version of a House Hunters type show but better.
Mavis Butterfield says
YES! We love it!!
Jamie B. says
I kinda figured you did but I had to mention it.
Michèle Crawford says
TOTALLY addicted to Escape To The Country!
Jamie B. says
Awesome. I will be a bit bummed when the episodes run out.

I love this show! I also love how they are very honest but not brutal or sensational in their critiques and how everyone is in it together. If someone has extra time, they are helping others out! Even the hosts. Super fun to watch and they love helping. This is was good competition is all about. I have literally stopped watching all American reality TV after discovering this. I didn’t watch that much to begin with but it definitely lost it’s appeal after this.

This show is like a hug from baby Jesus to my soul. It’s awesome, and the two commentators that say…Ready…Set…BAKE! make it that much more delicious to watch. Enjoy it!
Tammy says
Totally love this show! And like Lisa said, I appreciate the helpful criticism. I can’t understand English accents! LOL So I have to watch with closed caption!
I like the American version of the show too.
Lori says
Hahaha! I watch it with closed captioning too! That way I don’t miss a thing on the BBC shows 🙂
Lisa says
Thank you for the recommendation, I’ve been wondering. I love watching Food Network but didn’t think I’d like the ‘British’ version. But if Mavis likes it I am pretty sure I will!
Annette says
Love the show

Loved every moment of this well-done show! Glued to my seat…bought the cookbook not long ago, another beautiful and useful presentation!

This is my favorite TV show. I don’t watch a lot of American network TV. I watch mostly PBS and The Smithsonian Channel on Roku. And youtube. But I love, love, love how Mary and Paul are honest but not cruel. Mary is always like “it’s a bit disappointing, isn’t it” and then she kind of makes a scrunched up face. And you know it pains her to say it. I love it. Love love love it. But next season Mary and the two presenters, Mel and the other one, won’t be on. They have hired new people.

I hope the show is just as lovely with the new people.

In the UK we call it “the great British bake off”. I wonder why they changed the name?
HeatherS says
Love this show! I love that, while you know they would each love to win, they are kind to each other and supportive (they often help each other if time allows). Love how the judges are honest, but not cruel and the hosts are wonderful. I have heard they are making changes next season, so a little nervous they will ruin it.

To take it a step further there is also “The Great British Show Master Class” on Netflix that shows Paul and Mary baking their versions of each seasons show stoppers and other dishes that the contestants had to cook. I like watching how those two interact with each other. They seem like they have a genuine great friendship between them.
Pam says
We love the Great British Baking Show!! But then again we love alot of British shows ( Sherlock and Doctor Who being our two most favorite). Love British humor!

I love the Great British Bake-Off! I think the American one, hosted by Nia Vardalos and her husband, is not bad, either.
The overseas cooking show I really like, though, is Masterchef Australia. Soooo much better than the US version. As in GBBO, people help each other and become friends, the judges aren’t mean or shout-y, and the challenges more reasonable and interesting.
It doesn’t stream legally here in the US, yet, but i’ve had the opportunity to watch several seasons and I sure hope they bring it to Hulu in the US sometime.
Laura says
This is one of my favorite shows too. The contestants are so nice to each other and are genuinely happy when the others win. It’s very refreshing.
Candice says
Yes, I have watched all the seasons available and also watched The Great Irish Bakeoff and the Great Austrailian Bake Off. Also, good. Not sure if available on Netflix but it is on You Tube. There is also Great British Bakeoff Sport Relief and what I am currently watching, the Great British Bakeoff Comic Relief. I believe on Netflix there is also a show of Paul and Mary actually showing how they bake many of the items themselves with no contestants and give several hints of how something should look and taste. Several seasons of that. Escape to the Country is wonderful and so much better than the American house hunting shows that are on the air. Watch one and you are hooked.Nice to watch any on these on rainy days or snowy days while knitting.

I had no idea there were other Bake Off shows. Thanks!

Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc are brilliant and I think make the show.
As mentioned, they aren’t in the next season but Sandi Toksvig (do you get QI? She took over from Stephen Fry) is fantastic and should be very good. Not sure how American viewers will get on with Noel Fielding though… Should be interesting!
Ali says
I’m not sure how I’LL get on with Noel Fielding!!! He’s very out there! But I love Sandi so I’m willing to give it a go.
Hazel says
Well, yes! He’s either brilliant or goes right over my head. I’ll give it a go for Sandi Toksvig too 🙂

I think I have watched nearly every one of these shows. I have also watched the Australian version. If you can possibly find it try and watch the show The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice. It can be so naughty and hilarious. They have an interview with the most recent person “to leave the tent”, a guest chef and another, often a comedian. People are encouraged to bring in their bakes or to send in photos. I love it even more than the baking show. I grew up watching English TV in a migrant family (England to Australia) so I am well used to this particular banter etc.
Margaret says
Best show ever! I love how everyone is so positive and encouraging. I also love learning what the British like to bake! Their cakes, pies, pastries are so very different to what we make here. It is fascinating!
Trace says
Sue Perkins is also in a wonderful show called “The Supersizers,” where she and Giles will eat food from historical periods for a week. It’s a hoot. You can find it on You Tube.
Gail Golden says
I absolutely love this show. I don’t like to bake, but I really enjoy watching them work on the recipes. I love anything British, too, so that makes me happy. Also, I love the kitchen decor, the colors…all of it just makes me happy, happy, happy.
Blessings,
GG

This is one of my favorite shows! I actually subscribed to PBS just so I could watch season 4 and not have to wait till it got to Netflix. Every time I start watching a new season I think it’s not going to be as good as the last, and then I just get attached to the new people. So fun to watch the different personalities baking under pressure and marvel at the creations. I also love the non-cut-throat aura. Now I will have to look for Escape to the Country.
