If I had to choose just one television program that I have adored, and I do mean ADORED with every fiber of my being for as long as I can remember, it’s The Waltons.
In my mind, The Waltons is the best television program ever made. An ordinary family, living in a small town, with simple down home values. It’s a clean and wholesome program and I just love it to bits. In fact any time I have spent the night at my parents {or my mother has at mine} she always yells out “Goodnight Mary Ellen” to me as I’m going to bed.
And because I’m such a nerd, I’ve even been to the Waltons Museum, Earl Hamner Jr’s childhood home and own a signed copy of Spencer’s Mountain. So you can imagine how delighted I was when I found out The Waltons seasons 1-9 is now available with Amazon Prime.
So… I guess you pretty much know what I’ll be watching every.single.evening. this June as I work on my hooked rugs and such. THE WALTONS! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Did you grow up watching this show? Do you love it as much as I do? Who was your favorite character? I think mine is still Grandma.
Have yourself a great weekend,
~Mavis

I too love the Waltons. Better times, hard, but better than now.

I adored the waltons. I aspire to be like mommy Walton and I would love to visit the museum! I’ve got season 1 to 7 on dvd and I’m currently watching season 6. I live in Scotland so not sure we get the same choices on Amazon prime but I will check. If not I’ll be asking for two dvds for my birthday!!

Just wasn’t the same without John-Boy though. I like John boy and his mama.
Another topic: I miss all your money saving (aka pay down the principal of the HOA house) posts. :). I’m guessing you save lots of money these days by needing to stay home and be the groundskeeper.

Me too, Mavis! In fact it helped me cope with an unhappy childhood and feel that there was better out there. And I think the Walton’s lead better lives in those hard times than most affluent people do at anytime.

Mama was my favorite; I stopped watching around the time she left the show. What a wonderful, wholesome life they portrayed! I’m working hard to re-create that simple, happy life for my family. 🙂

I’m actually really sad right now because I wish all kids today and millenials would watch the Waltons and Little House on the Prairie and Leave It to Beaver.
My son is 17. When he was younger I rented Little House for us to watch during the summer. It really taught how to overcome so many obstacles and how to treat eachother.

Regarding a clothesline, check out the Hills Hoist which is an Australian product available through Home Depot and a few other suppliers. It is completely worth the money, has a lifetime guarantee, and works brilliantly. I use it year round (in Texas) and you probably will be able to also since the sun shines in the winter time in New England. It is NOT your typical umbrella style line….after you hang the clothes you crank it up and, due to ball bearings, it spins in even the slightest air movement.

I found this one on Lehman’s and watched a video of the Hills Hoist. VERY fancy!

I confess I found the Walton’s to be a bit saccharine (sorry!), but I did love all of the PBS reality shows of living life in various periods in ours’ and England’s history. More realistic, less corny and I LOVED all the self-reliance those families showed when having to live on the American prairie, in urban England during the early 1800’s or whatever. Same spirit, but hey, I’m a New Yorker…we roll our eyes 10 times before breakfast.

I loved watching The Waltons when I was a kid! Thanks for the Friday recommendations. I always like finding out about the return of old shows/movies and new documentaries that you discover (since I have similar tastes). After watching different episodes of the Footloose travel series while I stitch, I came across Great Estates of Scotland – which you might be interested in seeing on Prime.

Love the Waltons!!! I loved the Baldwin sisters and ‘the recipe’. Makes me laugh every time. We always say ‘good night John Boy’. Great times watching with my family.

Loved the Baldwin Sisters! Wish I had a couple of lady friends like that. Telling stories around the fire and sippin on ‘The Recipe’. In “The Homecoming”,
I especially enjoyed their role in the film.
“…and in that whirlwind of golden leaves, Ashley Longworth kissed me.

I always loved The Waltons, starting back with The Homecoming with a different cast except for John-Boy. I remember that when I was pregnant, with all those hormones running through my body, seeing reruns of The Waltons made me cry because my family wasn’t like theirs. I always wanted a big family and didn’t get one.
I hope you’ll forgive my bringing up a spelling pet peeve, though. It really hurts my eyes to see that apostrophe added in their name. Why do people think that a plural like Waltons needs an apostrophe?? It really really bugs me and I just had to say so. Apostrophes are only for contractions and possessive, they are never ever needed in plurals, but I see it all the time.

Loved the waltons! Every single yr at camp….didn’t matter which camp, lol, we said goodnight to all of the walton characters before bed! Hehehe! I think I crushed on John Boy, but wished my hair was the gorgeous red of Elizabeth’s!!! We watched some of the episodes with our kids a couple of years ago….not sure why we stopped…. (My ds crushed on Elizabeth, though, lol!).
I read the first book in Jan, I think? And bought the second book….but haven’t read it yet. We have family not too terribly far from the homestead, but we’ve never stopped in….we’re always too busy with something else….

A few years ago I and HH went to tour Monticello close to Charlottesville VA. If you haven’t been you should. Anyone who is interested in gardening history in America would find it interesting. I Googled other interesting sights nearby and found the Walton’s Museum. We visited the museum and the actual homestead. I was surprised how small the real house is. Think of all those kids in that small house. I tend to buy coffee mugs as souvenirs from places I’ve visited. My Monticello cup says “I cannot live without books”. My Walton’s mug says “Good night John Boy”.

I love the Waltons but my life will be complete when Little House on the Prairie is offered at no charge 🙂

Mavis, my ALL TIME favorite show! I own all of the episodes and even watch the re-runs. I would love to have lived in that time.

I’ve been enjoying Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver (my coping skills when stressed :)) and love the roles that fathers have with the sons as far as teaching responsibility, learning how to work, giving your word, duty, telling the truth, learning how to care about others. I adored Donna Reed, who was very cutting edge for the times.

LOVE the Walton’s! I own the set and every so often wil binge watch a season. A look back at a less technologically complicated time. Certainly different than the one we live in today!

Am the youngest of three Walton children growing up when the show was on prime time TV. We were the only Waltons in the phone book, so often a call would come in asking for John-Boy. If my dad answered, he’d tell the person that the show was behind reality and that John was now living in Chicago. Usually he got a positive reaction. But when he put down the phone, my mom would cluck at him, “Now Charles, you are just playing with that poor child!” But it was partially the truth, my oldest brother, John, was living in Chicago.
