Not only did the HH and I binge watch the series Turn: Washington’s Spies, once, but twice. Yes, it is that good and let me tell you Bob, if you are a history buff, or are just looking for some period decor tips 😉 this is the show for you!
“Turn: Washington’s Spies is an American period drama television series based on Alexander Rose’s book Washington’s Spies: The Story of America’s First Spy Ring.” The acting, the costumes, the sets, were all so well done and we can’t recommend this series enough. Currently available on Netflix.
We LOVED this series and often found ourselves fact checking and talking about bits from the episodes the next morning. Oh, and the wing back chairs in Richard Woodhull’s big sitting room? I want those!!! They would look so perfect in our new {old} home. And Samuel Roukin? He did an excellent job portraying John Graves Simcoe {what a creepy fellow!}.
Let me know what you think if you decide to watch it–or if you have already seen it.
Peace out Girl Scouts & have yourself a great weekend,
~Mavis

They did all of the filming for this series in and around my hometown of Richmond, VA. Also, when filming wrapped up, they had a massive auction of most of the set pieces, including the chairs that would look good in your new house….whomp, whomp, whaaaaaaaa. BUT I’ve seen a lot of those pieces make it to eBay, so who knows? Maybe they will make it to the Butterfield’s after all! Happy Friday!

I LOVED THIS SERIES!!! I was so sad when it ended. The book is excellent, too. I highly recommend it.

I started watching it, but when the sex scenes started, I stopped. It was totally unnecessary to the series and ruined it for me.

I, too, was just dumb founded when they felt it necessary to include the sex scenes. That, I think, says a lot about how unintelligent the makers of the program think we are. I fast forward through it, gritting my teeth. Loved the series, as history interests me. Kinda sad at the end.

We loved this series and you’re absolutely correct, Mavis…..the guy who played Simcoe was totally creepy and part of that creepiness was his voice….ugh! He did an excellent job though of making everyone detest him but the part I couldn’t get over was that he never did get killed and supposedly wound up as some sort of mayor or something along those lines. Truly a great series with so much historical information throughout, but my favorite character was Abe, hands down.

Loved it.

I also despised Simcoe. He did an excellent job of acting to make lots of people dislike him. I am sorry the series is over, and hope for some new ones. Also Mavis I love your blog. Love all your new chicks. I would love to have my own, but alas, I am too old to take care of them. Also enjoyed your journey across country. I admire your spunk and determination to do what you would like and your sticking to your plans. Keep the tales coming.

Really loved the series, too…it was right up there with Poldark, which is saying a lot. I only wish I could find the 4th season on DVD. It only seems to be streaming, unless you want to buy it episode by episode from Amazon.
The only problem: they took some liberties with costume, hair down, etc. which would have been considered more than a little slutty, even in that time period.
And sadly, most of the quilts were WRONG. (Although they generally got the textiles right.) Which drives a textiles-oriented appraiser like me UP THE WHEEL. They did their research so beautifully on the other stuff — why not this, too?

I haven’t watched it….the trailer looks really good but I’m with the commenters mentioning the sex scenes. I’ll have to read more about it to see if it’s worth forwarding through the scenes.
If you look at the box office, great stories that are clean make much more money than those that add social issues or unnecessary sex. That’s why I love Jane Austen so much. You have no doubt at all how he people feel about each other without all the extra.
I love these posts! We’ve found so many fun things to watch through your Friday emails. My husband has started asking me ‘What does the HOA lady say to watch this week?’ ……He started calling you the HOA lady when you had all the drama going on & he doesn’t know who I’m talking about if I call you Mavis! 😉

HOA Lady… That’s funny!
