Last weekend I shared a picture of the current paint by numbers project I am working on “Garden Path With Chickens” by Gustav Klimt.
Later that day, One Hundred Dollars a Month reader Tonya left a comment about the painting that caught my eye.
“I love the painting you are doing. Have you ever seen the movie “Woman in Gold?” That same painter is the one who painted the piece “Women in Gold”. which is of the main actress’s aunt. It’s a great movie.”
So of course I looked up the movie and the next night we watched the Woman in Gold {starring Helen Mirren and Ryan Renolds}. It was fantastic!!!
We enjoyed the movie so much, I just had to share.
“The film is based on the true story of the late Maria Altmann, an elderly Holocaust survivor living in Los Angeles who, fought the government of Austria for almost a decade to reclaim Gustav Klimt’s iconic painting of her aunt, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, which was confiscated from her relatives by the Nazis in Vienna just prior to World War II.” ~ FilmIsNowMovies
So a big thank you to Tonya for recommending the movie Woman in Gold. Well done. If you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, I highly recommend it.
Let me know what you think if you decide to watch it–or if you have already seen it. And keep those movie recommendations coming!
Have yourself a great weekend,
~Mavis

Mavis,
My daughter just told me that you can sometimes get “digital library cards” from big city libraries (in your state- i.e. your state capitol, etc.) to use Libby or Hoopla to get digital books and resources online. Hope this information helps expand your audio book selection opportunities!

I’m glad she got the painting’s ownership back — but it is harder to be enthusiastic about it “staying in the family” when she turns around and sells it. That’s happened with a number of Nazi-seized masterpieces that are returned to the family of the original owner. Makes me wonder — is it the money, after all is said and done?
(I’m not saying it shouldn’t have been returned. I’m saying that the motives for doing so don’t always end up as altruistic as they initially seem.)
If you get a chance when visiting New York City, there’s a wonderful German/Austrian museum (Neue Galerie) that has at least one Klimt painting…they’re incredible up close. (Their lunchroom, with Sachertorte, is terrific, too… I lived in Vienna for a summer, and it came the closest to that experience ever.) https://www.neuegalerie.org/
And you definitely need to see the movie “My Best Enemy.” It’s in subtitles, but talks a lot about the German/Jewish art world during and after WWII. One of my very favorites.

It is easy to look at it that way. However, the reality is how could the family have kept it? There are a lot of details concerning security, loaning it out to museums, etc. that complicate it. Really, this is a story that stands for all Jewish families that had possessions stolen from them. Winning the case was a victory for those that lost everything. It was their property all along – they should be able to profit from it’s return however they see fit.

P.S. The Klimt painting I’m remembering IS “Woman in Gold!” So you could see it there in person at the Neue Galerie…

Klimt may have been more than a trifle weird…but he was an incredible painter.

It is a good movie! One of the few times that I enjoyed the movie more than the book.

We recently watched ‘ A Bear Named Winnie’ and really enjoyed it. The bear was AA Milne’s inspiration for the Pooh books

Maria Altmann’s son lives in University Place, WA. When the movie came out, he gave several after “after the movie” talks & Q&A at the Grand Theater in Tacoma. Very interesting.

When are you going to New York? I have a museum recommendation.

Will definitely watch the movie, since our native Vancouver “boy” Ryan Reynolds is in it. Another movie you have to absolutely MUST watch is about a Canadian Folk Art artist called “Maudie”. Just so good, and make sure you watch until the very end. You will see the real Maudie and her husband. My husband and I can watch this movie over and over again. Just so good. Mixing paint in old sardine cans, her husband talking about peeling potatoes. We loved it.

Loved Maudie!! Bought the DVD. 🙂

The book is very good also. If you like Helen Mirren and because you’re a ‘foodie’ you might like “The 100 Foot Journey.”
