I was going though my photos from the Northwest Flower and Garden show this morning and there were a few more I wanted to share with you. For most of us the weather is still pretty dreary and looking at pictures of flowers and garden scapes gives us all a little hope that sping is in fact right around the corner.
Even if you can’t plant anything outside just yet, you can plant succulents inside. Not only are succulents gorgeous little works of art but they are super hardy as well. I made a succulent terrarium last winter and it’s still going strong 1 year later.
Check out these mini garden mansions. Aren’t they dreamy? If I remember correctly they run about $9,000 delivered. I think we all need one don’t you agree? Maybe I’ll ask the HH to make me one. And then cross my fingers and hope my wish comes true in about 50 billion kazillion years. Ha!
I wonder if the hat and terra cotta pots are included?
Now I thought this was amazing. I LOVE waterfalls. But here in the Northwest we have these lovely {evil} birds called Canada Geese. If you have a plot of open grass they’ll converge upon it and then proceed to tear up your lawn. Once they find a place they like, they’ll never leave {on their own} so I’d be totally terrified to have something like this in my yard.
But this. This I can total do. These desert gardens filled with succulents and mini aloe plants are all the rage right now. Simply gather up a few rocks, a bit of sand and you’re good to go.
And does someone know that name of this plant? I know it starts with a C. I thought I knew what it was but when I tried to google the word I came up with Chlamydia. OBVIOUSLY that is not it!! But I think it might be close to it.
Anywho, I need to get a few of those for my front porch. I buy a few every year but it’s been so cold lately I can’t find them anywhere. Help!

Silke says
Hi Mavis,
in Germany this plants are called Alpenveilchen, so the name is cyclamen.
Jen D says
Hi Mavis!
The C plants are cyclamen.
I love all of the succulents!
Dawn says
Yep, they are cyclamen. I have always thought of those as indoor plants. However, whoever lived in the house before we bought it, planted one outside. It continues to grow outside. It is not in the best place in the garden, but I’m afraid to move it and kill it. I’m not sure how it has lasted through the winters here in Washington, but it does. 🙂
Sandra says
What is your zone?
Mavis Butterfield says
8 🙂
Cecily says
What you probably have is hardy cyclamen (c. hederifolium). It is hardy to zone 5. What is often sold in stores is c. persicum which is best as an indoor plant.

We have a cyclamen that somehow ended up living underneath out hose bib. No idea how it got there, I certainly didn’t plant it. It goes away every winter and comes back in the spring. Because it’s right nest to the faucet I always remember to water it!
Karin Carson says
Cyclamen , they can be indoor outdoor come in many colours. I live in the interior if BC we have tons of Canada Geese we have 1/3 of an acre of lawn, live beside huge grass and forested field and have never had any issues with the geese, Magpies and cow birds that’s another story.
Emily says
Such beautiful pictures. Especially the first. So inspiring. Only 75,000 more days of winter here in the Rocky Mountains. ugh. Your Canada Geese are visiting us, now. They congregate each afternoon on the golf course behind our house and torment my “bird dog”. I’ll tell them you say hello.

You can also get true hardy cyclamen. I have some and they have multiplied into my woodland garden. Really sweet plants and NO MAINTENANCE and NO PESTS. The perfect plant!
