A few weeks ago the folks at PlantingTree.com contacted me about trying their online nursery, and what can I say, the timing was perfect!
As you know, we just bought a home and I wanted to get my front landscaping in before winter. While there was some basic landscaping in place, it really wasn’t my style and so my plan was a simple one, hydrangeas for the back row, a row of dwarf boxwoods in front of the hydrangeas and a few boxwoods to line the walkway.
I also wanted to add a simple 12″ garden bed in front of the dwarf boxwoods for spring bulbs and annuals that I could change out with the seasons.
But as it turned out, locating 36 Baby Gem Boxwoods {the exact variety I was looking for} in early October, was a little more challenging than I had anticipated. All the local nurseries and big box stores were sold out. Luckily though, PlantingTree.com had them in stock and ready to ship.
My husband, who has never been one to throw himself into landscape projects, all the sudden has no problem digging a hole or helping me around the garden. It’s hilarious. I think it has something to do with the size of the property, and the fact that all the ideas for improving the garden spaces actually seem do-able now that we’re on an averaged sized city lot.
The plants were ordered on a Monday and arrived on a Thursday and to be completely honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I mean mail order shrubs? What would they look like when they arrived?
Ummm… freakin’ fantastic! I was shocked. Not only were the boxwoods I ordered in beautiful and healthy condition, each plant was wrapped and zip-tied at the base and there wasn’t a single speck of loose dirt in the box.
We. Were. Amazed.
I ordered 1 gallon baby gem boxwoods {my favorite dwarf variety}, and each of the plants delivered were between 13″ – 17″ tall from the base of the plant. The height alone was impressive because the few boxwoods I had spotted at the local nurseries were well under the 10″ mark for around the same price {if not more} and didn’t look nearly as nice.
The plants were absolutely BEAUTIFUL
Did I mention my husband did all the digging and measuring? 😉
The end result? Mama Mia! What a difference a few well placed plants make.
I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. I’ll give the boxwoods a little trim in the spring once they’ve had a chance to settle in. But for now, darrrrrrling, I think they look fabulous.

Boxwoods with hydrangeas, swoon!!!! We are also planting a boxwood hedge with hydrangeas, but our hydrangeas are “Limelight “. We just took 120 cuttings from our current boxwoods and are propagating them. Hopefully it works!!! Can’t wait to see what more you do with the new place!

The only thing that adorable Colonial is missing is shutters. 😉 Quintessential New England. Makes me miss home. And lovely improvement to the landscaping.
Karen says
Yes, workable shutters that you could close during a storm or hot sunshine, for example, would really make the house!
Good luck and enjoy.
Tracy says
Totally agree that shutters would be the cherry on top. Just be sure to get proper wood shutters, not :::choke::: plastic, and mount them with working hinges rather than just screwing them flat to the house!
Karen says
Exactly, Tracy, real shutters are the best!

My box woods would now cover you whole walk because they grow to be so wide. Your house is very cute.
Diane says
I was wondering about that because they get 3-4’ wide. Maybe they’re easy to keep sheared small. Cute house! Such an about face from the acres she had before.
MPage says
Do you have a garden budget per month or do you figure the landscaping cost into the bid/price of the new house?
Debby says
So I go on-line to Plantingtree.com and check out some options and hoping to find Bing cherry trees. Only ornamental type cherry trees shown. So I call and because of the long wait, the recording suggested trying back later or e-mail. So I e-mail and get a response with-in minutes. They don’t carry fruit bearing cherry trees, but will consider adding them in the offerings in the future, and thanked me for the suggestion. They are typically available only in the spring from other nurserys. After seeing the quality of your plants, I hope they are available in the spring with them. Thanks for the link…
Peg says
Gosh, love the house! Good for you on not staying in a situation that evidently wasn’t right.
Julie says
Thank you for letting us see the outside of your house! I thought I would die from curiosity. My husband will probably wonder why I want a tiller for Christmas now.
Julia Tracey says
Yes, thanks for sharing the view. It’s darling!
Rebecca says
Love the new landscaping! I am looking to do something like that down our sidewalk. Once I get rid of all the daylilies planted there! Ha! (You know how that is.) I wanted to know how far apart did you plant yours? I am definitely ordering from planting tree.com! I love that this variety doesn’t turn bronze! Thanks so much for sharing!
Mavis Butterfield says
We planted them 18″ apart.
