On Wednesday the sun was out, the birds were chirping and the ground was all thawed out {well, at least 8″ deep anyway}. And so I headed out to the backyard to see where I should start first.
See that brick patio area above? That is going to be the site of 4 new garden boxes. The spot gets OODLES of sun and I think 4 raised garden boxes will look fantastic there once we get rid of all those pallets.
The plan is to carve out a little brick walking path between the garden boxes and then pull up the remaining bricks and re-purpose them as a brick border to other garden beds we plan to install around the backyard this spring.
The previous owners had 2 rose plants climbing up the back of the garage wall when we moved in. I cut those down last fall and now all that’s left to do is to have the HH dig out the giant root balls that are still in the ground. There’s also a rhubarb plant in the area as well, but I’ll wait to move it until I can figure out where to put it.
But for now, all I want to do is get the area prepped for 2 espalier trees and get the brick border installed as soon as possible. I haven’t decided if I’ll buy apple or pear trees {or one of both} but I’m pretty excited. I’ve always thought espalier trees add a bit of uniqueness to a garden because not everyone has them {and because they look cool}.
Did I mention the old bricks came from the neighbors house? How cool is that?
And while I wasn’t able to get the entire brick border installed the other day, word on the street is the sun will be out tomorrow and I’ll get to play in the dirt again. I was able to get the area in front of the peonies installed about half of the {future} espalier area completed, and that I’d say, was a pretty good a start. Ahhh spring. And all it’s back breaking labor. Here I come!
Have a great weekend everyone, I hope sunshine is in your forecast. 🙂

We have rain and 60’s in our Dallas suburb forecast for the next week. But, I have been weeding, planting flower seeds and new perennials lately. Mr. has planted 20 tomato plants, potatoes and onions, so now I’m going inside to put the house in order.

Wearing long sleeves and gloves, I planted six broccoli plants yesterday, and got fire ant bites on both hands and wrists. I hate those things!

I have finally transplanted my lemon and lime trees to stock tanks. Got two more stock tanks to fill for tomatoes, planted two complete horse troughs with lettuce, have tons of seeds going on the back porch OH and planted a red bud tree in a new bed that is dedicated to pretty plants, not food plants. Dug up some old hideous Russian sage plants under the garage window and those will be replaced with plumbago. And like Kim above, here in south Texas we have rain for the next ten days. But hey, its Texas and that can change ten times in two days!! 🙂

I predict that you will love your garden boxes. We moved into our present house 2 years ago and there were 2 gigantic extra tall garden boxes in the back yard. Gardening has never been easier.
And all that brick! Jackpot!

The neighbor must have been mad when he saw someone took bricks off his house!
