Looking for a cool graduation gift to give this year? Not sure what to give? How about money? Because seriously, what kid wouldn’t want to head of to college with a few extra bucks in their pocket?
In years past I’ve given Money Lei’s or CamelBak Bottles filled with cash, to my kids or their friends, but this year, when I the graduation card came in the mail from Mrs. Hillbilly’s daughter, I knew I’d have to come up with a new idea. Mrs. HB reads the blog after all, and so I knew I wouldn’t be able to use one of my old ideas. 😉
And with the little HB girl graduating next week, I thought a cleverly disguised box of tissue would be a super fun gift for her daughter to receive. Because seriously, what fun is just depositing a check in the bank? This was so much more fun!
Supplies You’ll Need
- Square box of tissue
- Transparent Tape
- Money
- Piece of card stock or printer paper
- Scissors
Directions:
Remove tissue from box and set aside.
Tape dollar bills together end to end with transparent tape.
Once you have all your bills taped together, roll the dollar bills into a nice tight roll and set aside. A custard dish works perfectly for this.
Write a message onto a piece of printer paper or card stock. The longer the message the better as it create a little anticipation on the gift receivers part. Using a piece of transparent tape, tape the message on to the last dollar bill in the roll and roll tight again.
Stuff 3 pieces of tissue into the bottom of the tissue box {for a little cushioning} and then carefully set one piece of tissue on top of the box over the opening. Gently set the roll of money into the tissue box making sure to keep a hold on the paper message portion.
While holding the message portion of the gift, stuff a few more pieces of tissue around the roll of dollar bills and in the box for cushioning.
And there you have it! A super cool money gift any graduate would love! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Have a wonderful day everyone,
~Mavis

You can purchase a type of scotch taoe that is easy to remove like a post it note. It would work great for this gift idea.

I so wish I had seen this last week. A dear former student was graduating with her Master’s at Duke and I search for a gift that was “just right” to no avail. Given that she is moving, anything tangible would have to be moved, and so I ended up sending a check (I know, no joy) The tissue box would have been just perfect. But I’ll hang on to the idea. Thanks so much!

I hate to say this — I really do. But a fair number of kids might think you gave them a dumb present, and toss the box before they discover the money.
I’m speaking from experience here. For a number of years, I’ve given a helpful financial book (“The Millionaire Next Door”) with a check inserted about twenty pages in. Do you know how many of those checks were actually cashed, without my saying something about the check?

Also, I need to point out the “Where’s George?” bill you included in the batch. Bills with specialty stamping like this are used as a kind of experiment in seeing how far they’ll go around the world. I’ve passed on several in various denominations over the years, trying to spend them in as varied (and odd) destinations as possible.

My uncle got brand new bills from a bank. Then he took them to a print shop and had them glued at one long side to make them like a tablet of paper. I thought that was pretty cool. Just tear one off the pad when you want to buy something. And watch the cashier’s eyes when you do that.
We used to travel abroad. We didn’t exchange that money when we returned from a trip figuring we’d save paying the exchange rate on our next trip. But we never went again. So, when our nieces and nephews started honeymooning abroad we gave that money to them as wedding gifts.
