A few days ago I visited one of my neighbors, The Duck Lady. I like to call her The Duck Lady because she sells eggs and baked goods and a few other seasonal things like veggie starts and Christmas trees at a little farmstand on her property.
And now I want a greenhouse.
I already knew I wanted to get a greenhouse at some point {we had a glass greenhouse back in Washington}, but after walking through hers and seeing all the wonderful things she’s got growing in there, I REALLY want to get one now.
She told me she grew some tomatoes in her greenhouse last year and she was harvesting them well into November. Real homegrown tomatoes… in NOVEMBER! Wouldn’t that be nice.
I thought I went overboard with the 1oo tomato plants I started this spring, she planted over 300!
Garlic {in the field} for days.
Her vegetable plot is HUGE! I forgot to ask just how big it is, but there is plenty of room for everything she wants to grow this year {and I believe it!}
Not only does The Duck Lady have a greenhouse and an enourmous garden, she has an AGA cook stove too!!! What are the odds I’d find someone in our small town the same age as me with a large garden, a greenhouse AND an AGA?
Seriously!?
AGA’s are a little quirky in that they don’t accomadate regular half sheet cookie pans so I ordered a few jelly roll pans from USA PAN hoping that they’d fit. I tested them out {and all my other baking pans as well} and all but 1 fit into her AGA.
The one that didn’t fit was the roasting pan. So now I’m on the hunt for a slightly smaller roasting pan.
We’ve been here in Mid-Coast Maine for about a year and a half now, and I feel like I’ve finally found a friend. Someone who’s into the same stuff I am.
And that feels good. 🙂
Here’s to a summer filled with gardening and baked goods.

Looking at the Aga stove, I’m wondering how I would manage without a window to check the baking progress without opening the door? You’ll get a greenhouse, I just know it.

We love our greenhouse in northern VT, it’s a game changer!

I am so glad you found a friend! Now you can settle in and be at home. I have greenhouse envy because the neighbors up the street build the most charming one out of old white wood windows over the winter. It is so charming and I can see the flats of starts in there on shelves all around the walls.

Glad you found a new friend! Her garden reminded me of our garden growing up.
May your friendship blossom and grow!

That is great, Mavis! It really is hard to move to a new place and find friends when your kids are grown and you work at home! You’ll have someone to have tea with! Yes, HH will get that built for you next year. That will be his project!

Does anyone have a suggestion for an affordable greenhouse?
Thank you

Happy for you Mavis!

Don’t worry, 100 tomato plants will still be plenty, barring gophers/blight. 🙂
(that is a gorgeous greenhouse! is it artificially heated in the winter?)
