Baby it’s cold outside! My goodness. I went out to water the plants in the greenhouse this morning and it was pretty darn chilly. I need to get a warmer bathrobe if I’m going to be out watering my plants at 10 am. 😉
So far the sage, thyme and chives I transplanted alongside the greenhouse last month are hanging in there.
The oregano, rosemary and garlic chives are thriving too.
But check this out. Sun Gold tomatoes. In October. How cool is that? These are real ones too. 😉 Not those tasteless ones you find at the grocery store that were picked last week and then ripened in the back of a truck as they were shipped across the country.
I’m not sure how much longer the tomatoes will last, but for now, I’m enjoying every one that I can. Even these green zebra tomatoes. Aren’t they pretty?
Oh, and thanks to the One Hundred Dollars a Month Reader who suggested I move my rain barrel into the greenhouse. You suggested I fill it up to let the afternoon sun warm up the water {thus warming up the greenhouse}. So far so good.
Okay, so maybe I don’t know if it’s actually warming up the greenhouse at this point, but you know what? I don’t have to drag the hose out there so I’m happy. 😉
And last but not least, take a look at the lettuce I have growing in a 3-tiered planter. How cool is that?
Looks like salad is on the menu tonight.
Peace Out Girl Scouts,
I’m off to plant some seeds.

I live in “sunny California” (although close to San Francisco, and I can’t TELL you how many thousands of tourists we see in fleeces with SF and a bridge logo they had to buy because we’re a LOT cooler than LA, which everybody things of!). It doesn’t get very cold around here, although we do occasionally get a hard frost in the lower valley floors. One year around Halloween we were going to be getting bad weather, so my neighbor pulled his still-bearing tomato plants and hung them in his garage rafters! (like many of us in suburbia he parks on the driveway, no exhaust fumes in the garage)
The tomatoes ripened in-place, and he was eating them fresh-picked (?) until January. Probably not as good as a summer tomato, but certainly better than anything you could buy in the store that time of year 🙂

We live in northern Pennsylvania in the mountains. It was quite cold this morning. I went out to the garden to get some cabbage and was able to harvest a few peppers and even 10 ripe tomatoes. I left the other 5 peppers and what’s left of the tomatoes to continue to ripen. It was very cool to have fresh picked tomatoes in October 🙂

You are so lucky! I am in NW PA and my second wave of radishes, carrots, broc and lettuce are loving this weather. I have two pepper plants still flowering. So weird. 🙂

What are you still planting?
Andrea says
Hi,
I am still harvesting red tomatoes from my outside plants. I also have cauliflower, carrots, and lettuce still growing outside. I am in southwest Washington and it hasn’t gotten below freezing here yet so I am just gathering as much as I can. 🙂

I’m still planting too! Hubs built me a lovely 2×6 standing height cedar bed this weekend, and I’m square foot gardening! It’s still in the 70’s and 80’s here, and will not ever dip below 50 in the days – – we don’t get frost til January! All the reasons to love and hate So. Cal, I guess.

Many years ago I planted tomatoes in the greenhouse, in the ground, and had tomatoes until January. Last September I planted a ‘Jenny’ cherry tomato in a 5 gallon bucket in the greenhouse. I installed a florescent light fixture and a small greenhouse heater that would come on when the temps dipped below 40 degrees. It survived all winter and even flowered and put out small green tomatoes. In May I planted it in the garden and I had ripe tomatoes by the first week of June, the first in my area (Tacoma). I love to experiment like this but I probably won’t do it again due to the cost of electricity.

Great job, Mavis! We are still getting yummy cherry tomatoes and the plants have more blooms! I’m in northwest Indiana, close to Chicago. This weather is wonderful…..but every day I expect to see frost in the forecast…..enjoy your fresh veggies!

I love the tiered lettuce. That is a great spacesaver and looks good. I know what I will be doing this weekend. I enjoy reading your blog, keep the news coming.

Ive been bitten by the greenhouse bug and cannot seem to go near a computer and NOT look at greenhouses. My local Menards has a Palram 6 x 8 marked down from $749 to $549…Im waiting for it to go even lower then I may scoop it up! Your blog and FB page are a true inspiration and I know what it takes to keep a blog up to date, its a ton of work, so thank you for that!!! -Jes
