I was planning on lining the inside perimeter of the greenhouse with pepper plants like I did last year but when I went to grab the pots, I discovered they were all gone.
The Handsome Husband thought all my free planting containers I snagged from the Home Depot last spring were garbage and recycled them. Aww how nice. What a total stinker!
Now I have to go hunt down some more so I can get those pepper plants planted.
This week I also pulled all the gutters from the left side of the greenhouse out. We have four total. I still need to transplant the Swiss chard starts out to the garden {but where?}.
After harvesting the last of the spring spinach that we started in gutters we washed it out and filled it back up again with cucumber starts. I plan on trellising these up to the rafters of the greenhouse with netting or twine {not sue which yet} once they get going. We did this last year and it looked really cool.
The side of the greenhouse. Ugg. I totally forgot I planted potatoes in the bed. So now we have chives, potatoes and lilies. What a great combo.
Lucy hard at work.
The tomatoes we planted in the old stock tank chick brooder has been planted with green zebra tomatoes and onions.
Tomatoes and onions in a recycled pot.
I can’t remember if these containers hold 10 or 20 gallons, but we planted 3 pepper plants in this one. Our pepper plants don’t get super huge, so I’m hoping there will be plenty of room for them to grow.
Strawberries in gutters = awesomeness.
And last but not least, Lemon, our Meyer Lemon Tree. She’s blooming! Wahoooooooo. This is a good sign. With a little luck, we should have some fresh lemons to pluck from her branches next February.
No matter how you do it, gardening is RAD!
Peace Out Girl Scouts, have a great day,

Garden Wisdom and Know-How: Everything You Need to Know to Plant, Grow, and Harvest

Hey Mavis, with all those delicious goodies coming from your garden, I wanted to make sure you were aware that certain things are poisonous to dogs. Things like onions, for example. Now, Lucy might have to eat her body weight in onions for it to be fatal, but there are plenty of other things she could get into that could make her sick.
The biggest example I have is baker’s chocolate – if she were to eat even a little of it, she would most likely die from theobromine poisoning. My sister’s dog got into her baker’s chocolate and almost died – it was touch and go there for a while. So, as you are a new dog owner, I just wanted to make sure you are aware of some of the sneaky things that people forget to tell you.
I love your blog and look forward to it every day! Cheers!

Mavis, I think HH needs to start reading some of your posts…..how could he not know you NEEDED those pots??? Anyway, your green house and plants all look wonderful. I planted some cherry tomato seeds a few days ago and they are sprouted already…it is the first time I have ever started with seeds. I feel like a new momma again! Thanks for all the inspiration and happy photos!

Mavis, if you don’t mind me asking approximately how much were the gutters, how do you hang them in your greenhouse? That greenhouse is beautiful as is your whole yard. Thanks.
Mavis says
Hi Arlene, here is the original post about installing the gutters. I think I paid around $10 per set. 🙂

Mavis, if you need more plastic pots, I got more than enough when I went to Rosedale Gardens (filled the VW) when they posted their freebees on Craig’s List. Got extra for a gardening club that now doesn’t want them. My husband would be glad if I got them out of our yard, so if you need some, give me a shout. I’m west of you, on the other side of Hwy 16.
