The Girl and I hopped a last minute flight to the PNW on Saturday afternoon to visit my parents for an early Thanksgiving. We got in late so as soon as we got there we went straight to our hotel and went to bed.
The next morning though we were up before sunrise {we were still on east coast time} so we headed out for an early morning stroll and hot chocolates before making our way to the grocery store to pick up all the fixings for a Thanksgiving feast.
We wandered around QFC with our list and everything was going as planned until we hit the kitchenware section.
And The Girl spotted Red Vines and Seattle Chocolate. Two things you’d be hard pressed to find in New England! So she loaded up. 🙂
And then feeling a little loopy from a lack of sleep, we came up with a fun idea for a Thanksgiving game while we were in the store. Because seriously, appetizers are so last year, right?
Round 1
Storyline: Your car breaks down in Kansas. You have not eaten for 12 hours. You decide to hitchhike. 20 minutes later, a man named Hank pulls up next to you in an 18 wheeler and offers you a lift to the next town which is 212 miles away.
You ask if he has any food. He opens the glove box and offers you a selection of jerky.
Your choices are:
- Jack Link’s Original
- Tillamook Teriyaki
- Slim Jim Mild
- Solely Pineapple Coconut
You’re so hungry you try them all. Hank asks which one is your favorite.
Hands down, we all picked Jack Link’s Original.
Round 2
Storyline: You go to REI and buy a pair of hiking boots. Inspired by your purchase, you decide to go for a 3 day solo adventure in the woods. You pack enough food and water for 3 days.
You get lost. On day 7, you spot a vending machine in a hollowed out tree. There are four options and each one is $1.00
- Pineapple Chips
- Dehydrated Broccoli
- Seaweed
- Dehydrated Mushrooms
You only have enough money for 1 item. Which one do you choose?
After tasting all of the choices, the parental unit and I chose the dehydrated pineapple. The Girl liked the seaweed the best.
Round 3
Storyline: You are seated at the kids table for Thanksgiving. There are 4 beverages to choose from.
- Rootbeer
- Butterscotch Beer
- Ginger Beer
- Turkey and Gravy Flavored Jones Soda
Aunt Gertruide is feeling generous this year so she lets you have a little taste of each before you have to decide which beverage you’d like with your dinner. Which drink do you prefer?
The parents and I chose rootbeer, The Girl chose ginger beer.
There were a few more tasting rounds and some other funny stuff and while we were only there for a quick trip, we had a good time and it was fun to hang out with everyone again.
Good memories and good food, what more do you need? 🙂
Here’s to a Happy Thanksgiving {and lots of leftovers} wherever you may be.
Wishing you all the best,
~ Mavis

May your Thanksgiving day be blessed! I grinned at your game…our family likes playing ‘…in Grandma’s house she has a trunk and in the trunk she has…’

I Love your creative game! This year my kids made up a Bingo game for us to play, with squares marked with things like “X and X argue” or “someone drops food on the floor” Each bingo had specific names on it. Lots of laughs here

So glad you were able to make it out this way, Miss Mavis!
I gotta know – how bad was that Jones soda?
Also – will you see the parentals at Christmas or did you already get the great gifts from your mama again … the travel size and free hotel items. I have always LOVED those posts!
Happy Thanksgiving and Holidays – I sure do love your blog and the joy it brings.
