Did you know today is National Pet Day? Yes. Yes it is.
Mrs. Hillbilly and I were texting back and forth last night when all of the sudden she told me she BOUGHT SOD for her chicken coop. I was like, WHAT!? Who does that?
Mrs Hillbilly: I was so tired of the all the muck.
Mavis: You know the sod is only going to last 2 days, right?
Mrs. Hillbilly: I hate the muck…. Give me some sun Dear God.
And then I looked up her forecast for Gig Harbor and had to laugh.
Mavis: How much did that cost you?
Mrs. Hillbilly: I don’t want to tell you.
Mavis: HOW MUCH?
Mrs. Hillbilly: $6. But my girls are worth it!!!!!!!
Mavis: Would that be $60 or $600?
Mrs. Hillbilly $6 x 8 = $48 {plus tax!}
Mavis: OH MY WORD!
Mavis: How many days has the sod been in the coop?
Mrs. Hillbilly: One day. I just put it out. The chickens seem to be liking it more today. I think they were a bit confused at first.
Mavis: You are a total nutter. Okay, I have to go make tea. I’ll talk to you later.
Ahhh the things some people will do for their furry feathered friends. Happy National Pet Day everyone, enjoy the sunshine if you’ve got it. 😉

I actually have some artificial grass in my run, just at the door so I can open up the coop in the morning without getting muddy feet. I was also sick of the mud (it rains a lot here!!) and it was going free. I can sweep it and hose it down. Chickens are ok with it especially as I scatter treats on it for them. It’s lasted almost 2 years so far 🙂

Oooh, how fancy. Looks like the girls are at a garden party. Hang in there Mrs. Hillbilly! Hopefully this will be the last week of the mud and gloom season.

I buy more fruits and veggies for my chickens and quail than I think I do for myself. Brats. I’d totally buy them sod too, if I thought it would last more than a couple days. And my dogs love tomatoes, watermelon, and carrots, so if I’m cooking/eating those they come beg. No wonder I can’t seem to eat my veggies… everyone else eats them for me! 🙂

I love you, Mrs. Hillbilly!

looks sooo good!! it should last longer than two days in the cool weather though right?

As someone who has spent heaps of cash lately trying to care for chicks (at the moment, with multiple large dog crates bungee corded together in my guest room), I don’t think I’m in a position to judge $48 worth of sod.
Mavis Butterfield says
Oh Mel, you crack me up!
Christine Hagen says
She could spread some hay or leaves over the mud once a week or so. That would help with the muck. Plus she would have some great fertluzer to harvest.

I’m so laughed when I saw Gig Harbor weather in this post. My husband and I moved east shortly after you did. We lived in Kirkland Washington. I lived there since 1992 and there was no way I was going to spend another winter with all that rain. I’ll take the snow any day. By the way, we landed in Wiscasset, Maine and I love it here.

We feel the same way! 🙂 And, we LOVE Wiscasset, Maine. Treats Bakery is one of my favorite stops when we are in the area {My husband loves Red’s}. If you haven’t already been to Head Tide Oven in Darmarisscotta, you need to put it on your list. Be sure and go on a Friday though, because she makes pies on that day. 🙂

Way to go, Mrs. Hillbilly, the sod looks amazing and I think it’s a nice treat for the hens. I had some Silkies and I would have to soak the mud/poo balls off of their feet regularly in the spring. I wish I had thought of installing sod in the coop myself to hasten spring.
Shannon says
This is cute, but my immediate through was that the sod could have fertilizers or pesticides on it that could be harmful to the chickens. There’s definitely not any organically produced sod out there.

I see this post will be much later, but I’m so excited. My landscaper is installing “chicken sod” soon. There is an actual chicken sod. We’re in south Florida. I’ve spent a fortune with mulch every 2-3 months. We started with regular st Augustine grass but within a few months it was gone (I had 5 chickens then and now I have 8). I can’t wait to see how the specific sod hold up. The chicken area is 15’x30’. I’m very excited
