Have you seen any good movies lately?
The days are still hit and miss around here. Some days I can work upstairs in the barn and some days I can’t because it’s too stinkin’ cold and my hands freeze up pretty quick.
Not only is it too cold most days to mess around in the barn, but the yard too. If we could just fast forward to the part where it’s sunny and 50 degrees outside, I would be spending all my time out there.
But it’s not yet.
I’ve already listened to a ton of audiobooks this year and now that I’m back to hooking rugs in the evenings again, I think I’m ready to watch some movies while I’m pulling all those wool strips into something magical.
So my question to you today is, have you seen any good movies lately? Or maybe a series?
We have zero subscriptions {no Amazon Prime, no Netflix, no Hulu, no ???} and I really don’t want to sign up for anything either, but maybe we could for just a month?
Are there any shows worth signing up for? I don’t know, you tell me. I know the library has a really good selection of new movies but I haven’t even taken a look yet.
What are you loving these days? What am I missing out on?
Do you have any suggestions for me?
~Mavis

If you join Apple TV for a month, you could binge all of Ted Lasso- SUCH a feel-good and funny show, set in England- and you could also binge The Daily Show- a fabulous with twists, turns and Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Anniston and Steve Carrell.
With how much you love England/”Brit sits”, I am surprised you don’t have the Masterpiece App so that you can watch all of that library from PBS. SO MANY period dramas, spy/whodunnits that are all well worth the watch!! Whatever you choose, happy watching!
Marcy says
The “Morning show” and it is really good! Bad Sisters is really good as well, Shrinking, the Dope Thief and The Studio are also good (Dope Thief and The Studio are currently airing weekly so I think there are a few already recorded)
And yes Ted Lasso is great! Good luck!
sandy says
shhhh…Ted Lasso is returning…
LaToya says
This is what we did because too many people talking about Ted Lasso and Morning Show. So, we binged them and loved them both.
Miss Mavis – you will like Ted Lasso, me thinks, because you love the Brits – and biscuits. 😉
Amy Hooper says
I love Doc Martin (port Isaac’s) and couldn’t live without my subscriptions to BRitish Acorn TV or Britbox. Soooo many good British shows – about $10 month
Mavis Butterfield says
I just checked and I can get a 7 day free trial! Hot dog. I’m going to check the weather report.
Stacy Bowen says
I have both and LOVE them.
Lmw says
Monty Don’s Gardenders World or any other Garden show he does. Maybe Dvd’s? But I usually subscribe to Brit Box for a few months this time of year just to catch up.
Magen says
I too was going to suggest Britbox, Masterpiece, and Acorn app.
Dawn says
Derry Girls
Call the Midwife
Ted Lasso
Landman
The Pitt
Shetland
These are all great shows. I struggle with finding a good engaging movie These days! But if you do get apple for a month, CODA is a great movie. But you would have to pay attention because it is a sign language focused movie
MC says
Derry Girls is sooooo funny!
Tracie says
Derry Girls is so, SO, SO good!! It will make you laugh until your sides hurt, but I also bawled my eyes out on certain episodes. Highly, high recommend!
Jenell Martin says
Pluto and Tubi are totally free! I enjoy watching old tv shows on Pluto and movies on Tubi
Dawn says
I do love my Acorn subscription. Midsomer Murders, Luther and Agatha Raisin are a few of my favorites. I also enjoyed the Sherlock series with Benedict Cumberbatch, it’s available on PBS. I recently watched A Gentleman in Moscow and loved it so much I have now read and listened to the book but I think that was an HBO/Max series.
You may want to check in with your cell phone service provider. I have AppleTV free through t-mobile. Whoever you have your service through may offer something similar.
Lana says
PBS shows are available free on the PBS app on your Roku.
Dawn says
Oooh, I didn’t know that. I’ll definitely be adding that to my channel line-up. Thanks1
Nan says
Roku is free. I use it a lot but you do need a smart TV and Roku stick- they cost about $20 and last for years.
Lana says
You do not have to have a smart TV to use Roku.
Sue S. says
I did not know that! And I don’t have a smart TV. We mostly watch PBS. Right now I highly recommend the last in the Wolf Hall series, The Mirror and the Light. It’s great.
Kelly-Jo says
I will echo Rebecca…join Apple TV. You could watch Ted Lasso, and I loved Shrinking as well.
Lana says
‘The Boys in the Boat’ is a great movie. Keeping that one on hold for when the teenagers grandchildren visit because we are always looking for an inspiring movie to watch with them.
Jeanine says
Boys on the Boat was a great movie!
Mary says
Boys on the Boat was awesome.
Tamara says
You might like The Guilded Age (HBO), or The Crown (I preferred the early seasons).
Lana says
A freebie we have through our library is the Kanopy app. We get 14 tickets to spend per month and most movies are two tickets. We have watched a bunch of great movies on there and there are a lot of based on a true story ones that are really good. The movies on this app are a totally different selection than you will find anywhere else.
Ashley Bananas says
You seem like an avid library user, so you may already know, that some libraries offer streaming services for free as part of their digital offerings. Ask if your library has Hoopla or Kanopy streaming, or any other streaming platforms. You may have a small trove of things to watch for free already 😉
eliz says
Hoopla digital and Kanopy might be available for free through your library.
RobininSoCal says
https://www.kanopy.com/en. Free through your library.
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks for the link… I just checked and our library is not a participant. 🙁
Kippy says
Maybe check and see if a nearby town library has Kanopy and if they will allow you to get a card for that location
RobininSoCal says
Oh so sorry :(. I wonder if they would be open to considering participating? We love all the old movies available on this option.
Sue in SoCal says
Thanks Robin! I didn’t know about the app. Checked it out and my library is supported. Thanks again!
Geoff says
Great timing! Criterion Channel is showing free movies this week. Lots of great stuff on this list:

Noelle Larson says
Derry Girls on Netflix. There are 3 seasons. You will laugh so much. If you streamed Netflix for a month or 2 there are always new movies and shows.
Diana says
We just watched the Americas with Tom Hanks, it was so relaxing! Funny that 50 is warm for you, I was just complaining last week because it was only 56 and I had to wear a jacket. Today it will be in the 80’s here in San Diego!
Cindy Brick says
‘House of David’ on Prime is downright wonderful…his encounter with Goliath was spot-on and mesmerizing. (We share Prime with a daughter who uses it for shipping.)
Otherwise, we’re in the same position as you.
On the free channels — and don’t forget Youtube —
‘Ambition Strikes,’ a couple who live off the grid in Idaho
‘American Greed’ (The Brick says I am a junkie for this — I am)
‘Tells of Wells Fargo,’ an old cowboy series
‘The Rifleman’ — I LOVE this show
‘Bull’ is very good
And we watch all the submarine movies and documentaries we can get our hands on. (The Brick was stationed on the USS Batfish, and his brother commanded the Pennsylvania.)
But I’d go back to old favorites like ‘Princess Bride,’ ‘Enemy of the State’ (scary, but a good reminder) and of course the Lord of the Rings series. Oh yes, the ‘Raffles’ and ‘Scarlet Pimpernel’ series, too.
Heather C. says
I often watch Tubi. TIt is free with Ad’s, I just installed the App on my tv. You can also check your cell phone plan, some companies offer free subscriptions such as netflix, hulu, apple tv, etc with the plans already and you just have to activate it.
I know your subscription free, but this fall with black friday check out the offers. The best one last year I got was Peacock for $20 for the entire year. That’s less then $2 a month which is totally worth it in my opinion.
Vy says
Do you have access to Hoopla via your library? It’s online and they have tons of on-demand movies and tv (British tv too!) and also “binge passes” for Great Courses or Nova shows. https://www.hoopladigital.com/
KCB says
Old ones, but if you haven’t seen them—Hidden Figures, Steel Magnolias, Jersey Boys
Judi Y. says
I LOVE Maine Cabin Masters on the Magnolia Network (and all their other shows) if you are able to get that.
Denise says
“Brooklyn” ….it came out 10 years ago but so good. I just rewatched it as the movie was based on a book and the author wrote the next part of the story in a newly published novel (which I just purchased to read on a long flight to Portugal)
Mavis Butterfield says
It’s a movie!? I loved the book. I’ll take a look thanks!
Heather in Nevada says
We have been renting movies from the library. Also the Murdoch Mysteries series from the library.
Carrie V says
Amazon Prime is the best service! We have been watching “Bosch” for years… He’s a detective in L.A. It is a real step above detective shows… His name (ostensibly) is Heronimous Bosch like the 15th century painter. I love Prime for all the British movies and series…Jane Austen, Charlottle Bronte etc. Once you start watch a “type” of show they recommend more.
kathy brown says
Do you have a local PBS station? If so, Miss Scarlett and the Duke is excellent!
Kelly says
Yes! I just watched the Miss Scarlett series this winter which I checkwd out from my local library.
Judith says
Anything British on PBS Masterpiece Theatre. Lots of good series but also if you like British history take a look at any series Lucy Worsley does, she is fantastic.
Also on Acorn, a really surprising, charmingly quirky series called Detectorists is definitely worth watching. Love the theme song too .
Mavis Butterfield says
LOVE Lucy Worsley! She’s great.
Charlotte says
Detectorists is one of my favorite series! Laughed out loud! I wish it had more episodes!
Nancy D says
We went to the theater last month on a date day and saw “The Unbreakable Boy”. Not sure if it’s available online yet. So so good!
Jeni says
“All Creatures, Great and Small” is a fabulous show with multiple binge worthy seasons.
I also really enjoyed, “ Around the the World in 80 Days” (the David Tenet version).
Erin says
I’ve been loving Emma (2020) – the latest movie adaptation of the Jane Austen novel. I have watched it twice this year so far. It’s such a fun adaptation & the casting is super. I also love renting the All Creatures Great & Small dvds from my southern Maine library. Yours may have it, too! Hubby & I also watch Murdoch Mysteries when we need an easy, fun show. The characters are silly & it’s a nice break from serious stuff. I’m not really a reality/competition show watcher, but I somehow got sucked into The Traitors on Peacock. I get the Black Friday deal each year & that show is a lot of fun!
Stacy Bowen says
The new All Creatures…is fabulous. A new series–The Residence (I forget if it’s Prime or Netflix–hilarious.
Christine says
The Last Rifleman with Pierce Brosnan. Watch till the very end and keep the tissues handy.
Jen says
As someone mentioned above, you can watch movies and tv shows on the Roku Channel. PlutoTV is another one I just found. It’s free to use and it has tons of channels for tv and movies.
