Last week after the HH and I attended the Connecticut Flower and Garden Show, we decided to stop by the Heirloom Market at Comstock Ferre in Wethersfield, Connecticut since it was close by. {Thank you to everyone who suggested we pop by for a visit, you guys the best travel guides!}
The Comstock Ferre Building is located in the heart of old Wethersfield, Connecticut and is surrounded by homes dating back to the 1700’s {50 of the houses in town were built before the American Revolutionary War}. You can read a little history about the company HERE}.
The property is currently owned and being restored by the folks who own Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company The historic Comstock Ferre buildings now houses a small organic grocery store, a cafe, and oodles of gardening supplies {including plant starts in the spring} and seeds from the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company.
The building, both inside and out was insanely charming. A Hallmark Movie was even filmed here! {Christmas on Honeysuckle Lane}.
I only took pictures of places where there weren’t groups of people sitting down and enjoying their privacy so I was only able to snap a few photos. The inside the main building is rather eclectic though with several sets of couches, and tables mixed in with displays of garden merchandise {seeds, potting soil, and other various gardening supplies} and local food stuffs.
While the set up has a bit of a relaxed, I could wander around looking at everything for hours, informal feel to it, it really works for this rustic space.
- Looking to run in and pick up a couple of packets of seeds or a bag of potting mix?
- Want to sit for 3 hours on a couch and get some online work done while munching on a homemade cookie?
- Want to meet up with a friend for a cup of coffee while the kids are at preschool?
The Heirloom Market at Comstock Ferre has a very calm vibe to it.
There are even refrigerated cases in the back of the store filled with local organic produce and locally produced milk, eggs and other dairy items.
Local maple syrup, jams and bread… Yep. They’ve got it all.
Seeds, seeds and more seeds. Practically at every turn. It was a gardeners dream I tell you.
I am hoping we will be able to make a trip back to the Heirloom Market at Comstock Ferre for their annual spring festival. Word on the street is they offer thousands of heirloom vegetable, herb and flower plants for sale during this event.
The Heirloom Market at Comstock Ferre in Wethersfield, Connecticut… The HH and I give it a two thumbs up. He liked the coffee, I enjoyed a London Fog, and the bakery treats were spot on.
- Historic Building
- Tons of gardening supplies
- Small batch bakery goodness
What more could you ask for?
Have a great weekend everyone,
~Mavis

This store looks wonderful! All of the posts are making me really want to get back up to the NE. The hot drinks and pastries look extra tasty too.

A bit jealous of your visit. I order my seeds from Baker Creek and they do a fantastic job staying committed to providing common and rare heirloom seeds. I hope you make it back in the spring.

I’ve been to the main Baker Creek Seed Company in MO during their spring planting festival. Lots of fun and the owners are really wonderful people. We chatted about homeschooling for quite some time. The seed store wasn’t as expansive as the one you visited but they did offer all seed packets for $1 during the festival. I stocked up for sure!

I’m jealous! I just received the Baker Creek seed catalogue in the mail this past week and I am still super excited. If you ever want a great and relaxing read to sit and sip tea with I highly recommend purchasing yourself a copy. It’s what get’s me through the last dregs of the Canadian winter, ha ha! Don’t try to read it all at once, though, it’s meant to be savoured slowly.

I am hoping to stop by their place in MO during spring break, while visiting the Laura Wilder musuem. ☺️

I try to visit Baker Seeds at least once a year. The annual catalogs are free but Whole Seed Catalog is worth buying.
It’s more than just a catalog. Mavis, you should talk your husband into a trip to the Spring Planting Festival and maybe a side trip to Branson.
