I was at the pet store the other day and noticed Sweet Potato Dog Chews for $7.99 a bag and thought … huh? I could totally do that! It looked just like dehydrated sweet potatoes, and I can dehydrate things in my sleep. So I made some and Lucy devoured them. It’s a super easy, super healthy treat. And guess what? Way cheaper than $7.99 a bag.
Plus, I’m always hearing about salmonella or other harmful ingredients in store bought dog treats. This way I know exactly what I’m feeding Lucy!
PrintHomemade Sweet Potato Dog Chews
Ingredients
Sweet Potatoes {seriously, that’s it!}
Instructions
Wash and dry your sweet potatoes, and then cut in 1/4″ inch thick slices {cut the potato lengthwise}. One simple trick is to make one lengthwise cut and then lay the sweet potato with that cut down to make your remaining cuts to keep it from rolling around.
Place the potatoes on your dehydrator racks, leaving space in between each slice. Set your dehydrator’s temperature according to your manual, and dehydrate for about 10 hours.
You can bake these in the oven if you don’t have a dehydrator. Bake them for about 3 hours at 250F, flipping halfway through cooking.
Place in Ziplocs or a sealed container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

I’ve been meaning to ask if you make your own dog food or do you buy at grocery stores? Curious if dog food is also in your monthly food budget total?
Mavis Butterfield says
We buy her crunch dog food and then mix in rice and, meat and veggies. And no, it’s not in our grocery total, it fall under the Lucy category in our budget.

Great idea! Aww, Miss Lucy! How is she doing in her new yard? What did you decide on the fence?
Mavis Butterfield says
She’s doing well. I think we are going to install a pet fence this spring. 🙂

I am going to make these this weekend. My dogs love dehydrated apricots and pears as treats, and one is a real veggie lover so I think she’ll really like these 🙂

Boy, I wish I had seen the recipe for the sweet potato dog treats around Thanksgiving when they were super cheap! They’re still not too expensive, though, and I will definitely try to make them for Miss Molly. I made her carrot and banana dog bones last weekend. She loves those and like you, I feel so much better about making them myself and not worry about how sick the store bought treats might make her. Thank you for the recipe!

Thanks, I’m going to try this for our puggle!
I wonder if I could do this with apples and carrots too? They are her fave!

Update: I made them last night for our Puggle puppy who had just come home from her spay surgery. This morning I gave her one and she loved it, so the kids tried one, and they love them too! So now we will take dog treats to the park for everyone to snack on! LOL

Awesoemsauce!

….or you could go to the Dollar Tree and buy them for $1.

I make these every other week for my lab. I use a mandolin to slice them and use my dehydrator for about 11 hours till crispy. She loves them.
