Lucy and I took a nice long walk yesterday. With summer on it’s way out I guess this means our hour long leisure walks will be back on the calendar for the next 9 months.
As we were walking Lucy was fascinated with the storm drains. She wanted to stop at each one and inspect it for treasures.
I had my eyes peeled for fall foliage. The leaves are just starting to turn and pretty soon the streets will be covered with shades of orange, yellow and red. It makes me giddy.
My mother gave us a bottle of fancy shmancy balsamic vinegar last year and I finally used the last drop of it last night. I loved the bottle so much I decided to peel off the label and hang on to it. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it yet, but it was just too pretty to throw away. Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this.
I guess it’s time to clean out the flower beds and break out the pruning shears. I adore this time of year and LOVE having an excuse to wear puffy coats and heavy socks without people looking at me like I am a weirdo.
And remember The Great Toilet Seat Debate last week? Well Mike Rowe, {remember him from Dirty Jobs?} did an episode testing out what happens when you flush with the toilet seat up with a black light.
Let’s just say… it’s totally gross. But if you don’t believe me, watch the video above.
So, what have you been up to lately? Is fall your favorite time of year too?

Mavis, I collect those bottles too! I’ve intentionally purchased more so I can have a row of them as vases. They are from Trader Joe’s
Mavis Butterfield says
Mine was from Trader Joe’s as well. 🙂 🙂

Don’t know if I have any bottles from Trader Joe’s but I save bottles for my bottle trees. I have different colored bottles and different size too. Love my bottle tree!

You aren’t alone in saving unusual bottles. I do the same. I use mine for all kinds of things. They are great to put in a gift basket full of bath items. Bath salts, especially the colored ones look really good in them. Shampoo on the vanity looks good in them. If you have a good lid, make your own flavored oil or vinegar in them. The suggestions are endless.

Hi Mavis, I save really pretty bottles also, fill them with homemade vanilla and give them as gifts.
Mavis Butterfield says
What a great idea!! What do you use for stoppers?
Ruth says
Hi Mavis,
I collect corks from retailers when I see them: Home Depot, Lowe’s, even the Dollar store. They are pretty cheap and come in handy. I keep them in a clean, empty, Costco Peanut Butter jar! Easy to find in my shed when the need arises. I am a wild woman when it comes to re-purposing, recycling and decorating. When I grow up I may me able to garden like you!

Wow- that video is super gross!

YES, I am too a sucker for pretty bottles. Especially the Trader Joe’s ones. I have used the smallish ones for homemade kombucha and salad dressings. Fresh flowers look so much better in them, rather than a vase.

Wow! It’s still sweltering here in Arkansas! Fall doesn’t show itself in color here until mid-October. I’ll be thankful when it gets here. Until then, please show your colors and I can dream in my air-conditioned home!
Deborah from FL says
I miss autumn and spring seasons with all the colors. It’s just not the same here in Florida. I look forward to seeing your fall pics.
I repurposed a bottle similar to yours by filling it with a variety of dehydrated hot peppers, popping a cork in the top and sticking it on my bookshelf. The different colors, shapes, and sizes of the peppers looked kinda cool to me.
I got the cork through Amazon. I had ordered a bag which included a variety of sizes. One was just right! 🙂

I save bottles all the time, especially blue ones

Here in Massachusetts we were in the 90’s today. At this rate we will skip fall and jump right into winter.

I collect all kinds of jars, but not bottles. I only collect ones I can get my hands into. I don’t have a dishwasher, so if I can’t hand wash it – out it goes. Ones with wired lids totally intrigue me too. I finally found a source of silicon jar rings so I can make good seals. And if they are green, so much the better. I have a collection for separating change, ones that I use as impromptu vases, and ones that I keep candy in.

Fall is my favorite time of year and winter is my 2nd favorite, so I’m very excited and impatient for summer to be over. We were moving in late June/early July when the Seattle area had that insane heat. Blech. It was awful. I have loved the last week’s worth of cool, rainy weather and look forward to much more! I have been baking my little heart out! I couldn’t use my oven for so long when it was hot. I also love to walk outside in fall, I am a native so the rain doesn’t bother me.
Sally Harper says
I’ve even been known to buy a product just to get the bottle.
