QFC $13.11
QFC had some great deals this week including a Buy 6 and Save special so I went ahead and picked up pasta for $.49 a box, Ragu pasta sauce for $1.49 a jar and Minute Maid orange juice for just $1.99 a bottle. Those are some pretty good prices if you ask me.
I also snagged a whole chicken and made 2 dinners out of it. 1 roasted chicken dinner and a pot of homemade chicken soup the next night. 🙂
Albertsons $6.63
Cherries! I couldn’t resist!! Luckily I won’t be shelling out too much money for fruit this summer because our raspberry and blueberry patches are loaded but cherries and peaches? Heck ya I’m going to grab them when I find a good deal.
Smith Brother’s Milk Delivery – Sponsored
Milk. It does a body good. 😉 Having milk delivered is AWESOME, there’s no doubt about it and luckily we are in an area where we can get it delivered to our doorstep once a week from a local farm. Pretty stinkin’ rad if you ask me.
How about you? How did you do at the stores this week?
Now that summer is in full swing, are you going to the grocery store less and less because of all the yummy fruits and vegetables you’re harvesting from you garden? If so, what are you harvesting this week?

Hey Mavis, what is your Cherry price there? My best price here is upstate NY is $2.49 a pound! Trying to make up my mind whether to make a batch of Cherry jam or not at these prices!
Also, in your travels in the east, did you try any cottage cheese? Born and raised in Ohio, their cottage cheese is sooo different than what is made in New England. Any time we go back to visit family, a trip to the grocery store is a required event to stock up on cottage cheese. Once talked to a dairy man who said that his company tried to make/sell mid-west style cottage cheese to sell in New England, and they only had complaints, requiring the product to be dumped! What’s the difference? Its the kind of cream between the lumps.

Hey Mavis- you had another great week- wish you lived closer- my daughter and I picked lots of cherries for free at my Dad’s orchards this weekend-she will be spending the day pitting cherries-pretty sure there is nothing she would rather do than pit 25 pounds of cherries!!
Mavis says
Cherry pitting is the worst chore, but so worth it!!
Helen in Meridian says
My Portland and Vancouver, WA houses had cherry trees. I found that taking the eraser out of a pencil and using that metal to push the pit out while holding the pencil worked well for me. Ever try that?
Mavis says
Interesting idea. I’ve never even thought of that!

I bought a cherry pitter from Pampered Chef a few years ago. Now I don’t even see it on their site. Best purchase ever. You just stick the cherry in there, squeeze and the pit falls out the bottom. I can do several pounds of cherries in no time. LOVE them!

I really enjoy your site– you have a lot of great tips to share. One thing I’ve thought about though: how much is your time worth? Of course we all have finite lifespans so everything we do is a tradeoff– a portion of our precious life in exchange for something. But on the less philosophical side, how many hours do you spend in gardening, canning, freezing, coupon clipping, etc. , as well as how much money spent on gas/electricity to run a larger freezer, heat canning stuff, etc? If you subtract the extra money you spend on energy from what you save per month, then divide the result by how many hours you spend in money-saving activities how much per hour you are earning/saving? Which is more beneficial in terms of dollars per hour– working extra hours at a job or working those hours at home and in your garden to save money? (Not that everything comes down to money— sometimes the satisfaction that comes with accomplishing or creating something is more of a reward than money).

Hi Mavis!
This week I am going picking cherries at an orchard. We chose the orchard because for only $1 a pail, they wash and pit all of the cherries (about 8lbs per pail). The time I would need to pit them is definitely worth one whole dollar! We make a day of it, with a picnic lunch under a tree.
I am spending less money at stores/farmers markets, etc. now that my garden is coming into play. We are eating snow peas and kohlrabi, as well as lettuce, spinach and greens (kale, collards, mustard, etc.), radishes, hot peppers, herbs (already have some dried), lovage (perennial celery), and more that I am forgetting now, I am sure….. 🙂
As far as the question of time vs. money spent in canning, etc.: I have answered this question many times, and it always involves the value of the time spent with family and friends. Though it is not taxable, I do cherish the time I had with my son, and friends that came over to help or learn from me how to do their own canning. Also, I am very popular at cookouts and potlucks due to the homemade, home canned items I bring. 🙂 I am also a bit of a foodie, and while I could buy many of the items I preserve, I am not sure if I would want to pay the prices stores charge for many things that I make. I also tailor recipes to my family’s tastes, something that cannot be done with store-bought. It helps us to eat more organically all year, including winter. I could not afford to do so if I did not preserve things when they are in season. And they are so pretty when lined up on a shelf! 🙂
