Our schedule was a little weird last week and as a result I only made it to the store once. With the garden in full production right now there really isn’t too much to buy. I had more tomatoes than I could process so I set up a little veggie stand and the end of my driveway. Have you ever done that?
What would you charge for a quart of homegrown tomatoes? I never know what to charge.
Albertsons $6.56
I stopped by Albertsons to pick up some whipping cream for some homemade ice cream when I noticed they were selling cherries for only $.99 a pound and doughnut peaches 4/$1.00. What a find! I also swung by the day old bread section and grabbed a loaf of reduced garlic bread for only $0.99. {half price}. Not too shabby if you ask me.
Smith Brothers Farms Home Delivery – Sponsored
Now that The Girl has headed off to college we no longer have a need to order whole milk. You know what that means right? Monkey Boy will get his 1/2 gallon of chocolate milk each week instead. 🙂
How did YOU do this week?
Are you buying less at the store these days because of the bounty from your garden?

I didn’t do half bad last week. It was what we call a Pay It Forward kind of week. I donated a bunch of things to local community center. Then I did some bartering. Ended up with 16 pounds of ready to eat chili, that I gifted to someome who could use it more then my family, 4 lbs of ham, 2 dozen eggs, fresh onions, green and yellow bell peppers, 6 huge oranges I’m making into cookies,, red grapes, fresh melon, a half ton of can goods and…wait for it…an entire bushel of fresh tomatoes.
I’m canning tomatoes right now and just heard my first jar PING!
It was a very good gifting, bartering and pay it forward week for me. $0 for feeding my family, feeling great because I was able to help someone else feed theirs.

Wow, bless you for paying it forward! Also, I am trying to learn to can, at 58 years old. I’ve read so much, and can’t wait until I hear my first “Ping”! LOL. I do remember being in my Aunt’s kitchen, about 5 years old, and all the canning going on….
Your bartering was awesome also!
Kathy says
Sue, thank you for the kind words! I may not have much, which is ok, and if I can help someone I will. Bartering is fun and it all works outnin the wash. Then there is what my family and I call creative financing, if one has and another doesn’t, it’s ok because it allmworks outnin the long run.

Tomatoes from the farmer’s market go for $3.50/lb here and I think that is really high, more expensive than meat!

5 years ago, I had such a bumper crop that I sold at our local Farmer’s Market. It was only 3 tables, LOL. “Phil”, me, and the lady that sold fresh eggs. I didn’t sell my tomaoes by the pound. I would just put a certain number in a little basket, be it cherry, or full size, and sell them for $1.00 each.
Tiffany says
Here in Arkansas, they sell at the farmers market for $3-4 per quart. I feel like that’s a bit high, so maybe sell for 2 bucks.

Last year I set up a table at the end of my driveway and just put a donation jar out. Worked out pretty well. Before I did that I tried to give it to the neighbors and no one would take it. Makes me wonder what they are eating?? I noticed the Mennonites in the area are selling tomatoes for $3/quart.
Mavis, I miss the garden tally or am I just not seeing this year’s?
Mavis says
No garden tally this year. I’m giving myself a little break this year. Still gardening a ton, just not recording it or striving to hit a certain goal. More for fun this year!

Thanks for replying. I’m all for fun! Right before the summer started I injured my back and am just now getting better. Pretty much ruined my summer but luckily our garden is in raised boxes. Looking forward to have more fun once fully recovered!!
