Costco Shopping Trip – $22.22 {for the food}
Same story different day. I went into Costco to buy socks and came out with egg rolls, a sack of Pirates Booty and giant baked potatoes and sour cream. You’d think after all these years I’d just walk into that place with a pair of those giant sunglasses older people wear so I couldn’t see out the sides. Tunnel vision. It’s a good thing!
Crappy Snacks for Monkey Boys lunch. {I have NO IDEA what I was thinking buying that applesauce!!}
Zaycon Turkey Event – Free
I had some Zaycon credit so I ordered a 20 pound box of Zaycon Seasoned Turkey Breast Roasts for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box and there were 6 roasts!!! We devoured one and popped the other 5 in the freezer for later this fall. I don’t know about you, but turkey and mashed potatoes are my favorite “comfort food” this time of year.
Fresh Corn from Farmer Ted – Free
Farmer Ted gave the HH 2 boxes of the sweetest corn on the planet this past Saturday. I cooked up a few ears for dinner and them froze the rest of the corn to use this winter in my favorite corn chowder recipe.
Homemade Applesauce
We are enjoying a bumper crop this year and there are still a ton of apples to harvest. If you’ve never canned applesauce before it’s super simple and I love that you can adjust the sugar to suit your needs. I used a few Weck canning jars with this first batch because I intend to give those away as gifts and used my regular old canning jars for the rest.
- 4 Quarts
- 14 Pints {I gave one to my neighbor Hulda}
- 4 Quarts Cloudy Apple Cider {I’ll post the recipe later this week}

Chick peas and black eyed peas i totally love but can’t seem to cook from dried bean state even with doing all that’s supposed to be done. Found a HUGE sale on both in cans spent $7.60 for 10 of each. Also found great deal on 1 pound chubs of lean ground meat, 10 for $10. No, not expired just over stock. Last but not least sale on canned diced tomatoes , 26 oz 10 for $10, they go great with the sauce i canned myself last month. . I make chili with the beans as i don’t care too much for kidney beans. Big slow cooker came out, did my magic and now there are numerous containers of chili in my freezer. Enough for at least 8 meals. All for the low price of $27.60. Yay me!

I wish we lived in a better area for Zaycon, we get the basics here I’m excited for chicken and still working through my ground beef but would have loved to get the Turkeys!

Starbucks K-cups coffee on clearance for 1/2 price at Kroger. This is a luxury for me at home. I would rather somebody give me some free produce though especially when I have a tiny yard to garden in!

Mavis, you bought baked potatoes. This Idaho girl sees potatoes that will have to be baked at home. 🙂 $28 bucks for 1 week is awesome. We just got a costco card with the recent deal, so excited, squeel!

Don’t shop hungry Desi. 🙂

I’m going there today. I’ll make sure to eat first. Don’t want to blow the rest of my budget while there. 🙂

Wow that turkey is amazing! I checked out Zaycon eons ago when I first read about it here (maybe a year ago). But they never had any pick ups nearby – nearest was always Bakersfield, which isn’t even close.
But now I’m excited that there’s a chicken event here in October! Placed my order last week, just have to count the days (29).
That, combined with the 1/5 of a pig that I bought (basically split a whole pig with 4 other families) should last us awhile.

Mavis, when I saw that turkey breast roast all I could think of was the recipe for “Jive Turkey” You make stuffing (little more wet that usual) and put it in a Belgian waffle maker to cook. So now you have a savory waffle, layer the turkey and mashed potatoes and then gravy on top. It is the bomb ! Thanksgiving meal with a twist

OH.MY.WORD. I need to try that.

Hi Mavis,
Although I have canned for some time (and make 50 quarts of applesauce each year – it helps my son’s medications go down more smoothly), I have never used Weck jars, but would really like to. Is there any difference in processing times or techniques vs. Ball jars?

Do you have a grocery outlet near you? I bet you do and it is a meca for yummy CHEAP food!
