I stopped by the store yesterday for a half gallon of milk {the price went up 10% from the last time I bought it, which was just 2 weeks ago, surprise, surprise} and was shocked to see that butter… the Land o Lakes brand AND the store brand of butter were both $5.99 a pound.
Butter! $5.99 a pound! I couldn’t believe it.
I didn’t need any butter, thank goodness, I stocked up on it last fall at $2.50 a pound {and that was Kate’s Butter, a local Maine company that is generally on par with Kerry Gold in terms of price} but still, I’m pretty sure last fall you could have gone home from the store with a pound of butter somewhere in the neighborhood of $3.00 a pound.
Maybe that butter churn from the antique store wasn’t such a bad deal after all.
How much are you seeing butter priced at these days? What state are you from, and what brand are you buying? Curious minds want to know.

I actually just saw the Kroger brand here in Denver go on sale for 2.88, I usually don’t buy it unless it goes on sale anyway. But I have to say, I have seen other “must have” items that I regularly use jump up in price by 15 cents in less than a weeks time. It is getting crazy out there!
Karen says
Same here, the regular price at Kroger is 3.79, which is more than it used to be, but I plan to stock up on the sale.
James says
In Buffalo we are now paying $6.99 per pound.
Rosemary Calhoun says
I buy butter at Costco (store brand). It has gone up also. Right now, it is 4 lbs. for 17.49 (4.37/lb).
Jamie says
Oh my word….what state? I’m in Illinois and it’s $12 or $13 for 4lbs and I thought that was really high!
Rosemary Calhoun says
I am in Florida. I checked the price on the website – maybe it is cheaper in the store. When I last bought it, it was around 11.99 for 4 lbs. I hope the website is wrong cause I am going to need some soon!
Rosemary Calhoun says
I needed to run some errands today, so I stopped at Costco and checked the price of butter – it is 12.99 for 4 lbs. (3.25/lb). Not sure why the website said it was 17.49 (unless that’s the price for non-members).
Sue D says
Costco online shopping prices tend to be higher than their in store prices.
Kath says
Northwest Pennsylvania Giant Eagle – store brand butter is $3.29/lb, Kerrygold is $4.99/lb and Land O Lakes is $5.99/lb.
Lori says
I’m in Illinois and can occasionally get a pound at Kroger for 1.99 to 2.79. Regular price is 3.79 now. My freezer is stocked but I still by when it goes on sale or I have a coupon. I think it’s only going to go higher like everything else.
Brianna says
I am really struggling with grocery prices in general. They are high on all the usual items I buy and keep creeping up. It annoys me when I know a 1lb butter block use to be on a regular rotating sale for 2/$4 and now I am lucky to find a 1lb block under $3.50. My conscious knows it is a rip off and the product is the same and I just do not feel like paying such a premium price, but I have no choice. I need butter! Then I debate with myself if I just need one block for now or should I buy another one just in case it goes up even more in price. It feels like a gamble.
I feel like I spend so much time shopping now because I ‘notice’ all of the higher prices and my head debates if that is the cheapest and if I really need it and if it is worth it. It is mental anguish to grocery shop when you know the prices are not reasonable. I have such a hard time accepting all of these price increases on staples and why?
Marianne says
I’m in North Carolina and the Land O’Lakes brand is regularly $7.49 a lb now! On sale I am very lucky to find it BOGO. Store brand are around $5 a lb
Jennifer says
I’m north of Charlotte and we only use butter and go through a pound every other week. Challenge butter is often BOGO and each box has a .55 coupon, so when I bought it a few weeks at $5.49 (BOGO price was $2.75), I ended up paying $1.65 a pound because Harris Teeter doubles the coupon. I will use the 4 boxes I got, save the coupons and wait for the next sale.
Meanwhile, what are y’all paying for eggs? At WM yesterday, their eggs were higher than England’s Best!! A dozen was $2.68 and an 18 ct was $3.98. Thank goodness HT had a dozen for .97 at Easter.
Melinda says
I love Challenge butter for this! I collect the coupons and wait for a good sale.
For eggs, Walmart here in Northern Virginia is 2.72 for a dozen large of their brand. Eggland’s best at WM is 2.67. I buy most of my groceries at Aldi, and their eggs went from .85 a dozen a few weeks ago, to $1.99 a dozen last week.
Barbara Dougherty says
I have a niece in Mooresville and she sells her eggs if you’re interested.
Dianne says
Double coupons? That’s a rarity! I didn’t think that existed anywhere!
Margo says
Butter ranges from $3.99 to $6.99 depending on ongoing sales here in So. Cal area. Eggs are getting expensive and range from $2.99 to $4.50 a dozen in our local grocery. Saw eggs at the farmers market last week at $8.00 a dozen.

Canada land over here, butter right now is 5.99 to 7.99 a pound. On sale the cheapest i have seen is $3.99 this year and I stocked up like a crazy lady.
Erin says
I have a stockpile and keep adding to it when I see it on sale. Normal price at aldi is 2.99 (iowa). A few weeks ago it was 1.99 and I bought the max even though I had a bunch in the freezer. I’ve always sold my eggs for 2.50 a dozen and now i cant keep them in stock because that’s cheaper than aldi or any other store around. Sausage patties about killed my husband, 20 patties use to be 4.99, last night they were 8.29.
Catherine says
I bought some at Aldi this week and it was $3.59 and the eggs were up to $2.59.
Lana says
$1.84 a pound at my ALdi in SC for months now. Was $1.64 at Easter.
Donna says
About the same for Aldi in the St. Louis, MO area.
Tracey says
Costco has kerrygold on sale til Sunday May 8th $8.50 or so in a 2lb. Box. Not bad for the best tasting butter ever!
KC says
Our store-brand butter went from 2.99 to 3.58, harrumph – but yikes at $6! Our LoL butter is $5/pound.
Just a reminder that corporate profit off “inflation” are massive right now; not to say that *some* of the increase isn’t necessary, but a bunch is just “we can increase prices to get even more profit and people will just blame it on nebulous inflation” when, actually, nope, a bunch of it is greed.

I bought multiples of these and put them in the freezer, so have not check the price lately.
Eggs were $6/1.5 dozen. I almost had a stroke and bought elsewhere.

Fellow Mainer here. I bought 4# of Cabot butter @ $3/pound during an Easter sale at Hannaford. (I kid you not, because of you, I can’t say the name without thinking Scamaford. Ha. They really do have good sales sometimes!) Probably should have bought more. It is still $3.22# at Sam’s Club in Bangor.
Cheryl says
I live in PA and paid $3.18 for Aldi butter yesterday. It was $2.89 about two weeks ago.
Cari says
Wow. I’m in Canada. So with the US/Cdn Exchange, your butter would be approximately $7.80 Cdn. No bloody way…
We are seeing an increase, but our butter is around $4/lb, which, with exchange would equal around maybe $5.20/lb US.
Don’t think I’m coming to visit in the foreseeable future!

Judy says
I was just at aldis in ct yesterday and paid about 3.50 a pound for butter. I also have a kilner butter churner that I use for special occasions. It takes a little while to make but that doesn’t matter. T only problem is th price of cream.

I’m so mad at myself! 2020 I stocked up on butter like a crazy person – like 36 pounds in my freezer – I bake a lot. 2021 I stopped buying as much and decided to use up the hoard even though Costco prices were $7.50/4 pounds. Lesson learned, if it’s a great price and I have room to store it, don’t pass it up. Butter in the burbs of Chicago is $13/4pds at Costco, $4.99/pd at local grocer.
April Myers says
Grocery outlet in Lacey, WA had Land O Lakes whipped butter with seeds in it for $.57 an 8 ounce package. I picked up quite a few and they are delicious!
Mary says
Interior of BC, Canada- butter at our only grocery store in town is around $6 a pound.. But it’s also the same at the Costco in the big city. I buy eggs from a lovely lady with chickens and her price per dozen has gone from $4.50 to $5 but her cost of feed has also skyrocketed. Farmers are also paying for the high cost of fuel, as are the delivery trucks…
Shirley Funk says
I buy Amish butter from a local Butcher shop in Stephens City VA. and its about $7 a pound, but it’s so worth it
HollyG says
Butter here seems to be about $4.99 regularly. We picked some up a couple of weeks ago for $2.47. We usually pick up a gallon of raw milk weekly and make butter using the cream from the top.
Vivian says
I always buy butter when it is on sale, so I have a good stash in the freezer. Even though I am stocked up, I bought 2 pounds at Safeway today at the sale price of 1.99/pound. So I never have to fret about not having it when I need it.
Cindy Brick says
Colorado here — in Sedalia, but I shop in Castle Rock.
Just bought four pounds of Lucerne butter at Safeway — because it was $2.49/lb and I am also getting nervous. (I also bought two gallons of milk at $1.97 on sale…regular price is now an astounding $3.97.)
Other butters pretty much start at $4.99 each. Outrageous. (I haven’t looked at Sam’s.)
Amy says
Land O Lakes Butter in Flagstaff, Arizona at the Kroger store (usually cheapest in town), was $5.99 as well. I almost fell over.

Keller butter $2.99 with special coupon (limit 1). Regularly $5.99 but I usually buy the store brands but this sale was cheaper. Southeast Pennsylvania.
Cathy Lielausis says
I agree that prices are crazy, but you might want to go shop at some of the more reasonably priced stores. You can get a pound of store-brand butter for $3.58 today and a pound of Land-O-Lakes for $4.98 today at Walmart.

I am in central California, Kerrygold Irish butter going for $5.49 for half a pound at Vons slighly cheaper at Trader Joes. Other butter is slightly cheaper and some like Plugara more expensive. I am lucky that I get some good butter donated to me as I cook for our local Ambulance service and the homeless shelter and that helps a lot. I don’t buy eggs as I have my own pastured eggs which I sell for $5 a dozen. I see eggs going from $2.99 to $8.00 a dozen depending on type.
Robyn says
A couple of issues for farmers is the cost of feed has skyrocketed as well as fuel for transportation. My heart goes out to the farmers!

I just bought 8lbs on sale and with my employee discount it was only 2.13 per pound! That’s why I bought 8…Target has 50% off in their online app this week for land o lakes

I just went to my local rural PA store (Costa’s in Smethport). One pound of Land-o-Lake butter was $8.59!!!!!! This is out of control and unacceptable. It’s a 50 mile round trip to the nearest Walmart and they know it. I bought the B brand, Best Yet, butter for $5.99. Thank God I don’t use much butter. I feel like I have to treat it like gold.
