Yesterday I shared how much we spent on groceries and some of the meals we ate in yesterday’s post. But I totally forgot to add the picture I took at Market Basket of the bin of corn for sale. It was going for $0.50 an ear. Holy cow man! How much are you paying for corn this season?
I took the picture because when I was at Beth’s Farm Market a few weeks ago. I noticed they were selling corn for $0.75 an ear {fresh off the farm}. Which seemed a little high to me at the time. But then I was like, well, when was the last time I really paid attention to the price of fresh corn?
In years past, I’ve never even had to buy fresh corn because my husband would always come home with a case {or two or three} of it for free from his co-worker, Farmer Ted.
I remember when I was a kid it was like 10 ears for a buck.
And I remember seeing stands alongside the road sell it 5/$1.00, but that was probably 10 years ago.
And really, when you think about it, if 1 stalk of sweet corn typically only produces 1 -2 ears of corn, paying $0.50 or $0.75 for an ear of corn shouldn’t seem that high, right?
I mean, can you imagine planting a tomato plant and only getting 1 or 2 tomatoes and then selling them for $0.50 or $0.75 each? That would be outrageous! {Yes, I realize the whole harvesting process is totally different, but still.}
I guess my point is I was curious how much are you paying for corn this season in your neck of the woods these days?
Because up here in Maine, it’s about $0.50 – $0.75 an ear.

P.S. In case you find a good deal on corn, here are a few useful links:
Gretta says
Here in central Maine, yesterday the corn was $6.50 a dozen right at the field. And they always throw in 1 or 2 extra. So that’s about .50 each. It is soooooo good.
Barbara says
It’s July 29, 2023 at the farmers market in Deadwood, SD sweet corn was $10 a dozen or a dollar an ear!
Mavis Butterfield says
What in tarnation?!? That is pretty expensive though. 🙂
Matt says
Hi Barbara I am a grower in Michigan. We are a vegetable farm. I appreciate your post! We struggle as a small farm and we upped our prices last year from 50 cents an ear to 75 cents. Personally I can see a trend with gas prices up and grocery prices ,
People are not driving out to the farms to buy produce.. That hurts us little guys that feed America.. Plus my herbicide insecticide and nutrients for these crops are crazy expensive.
Connie says
In NM is is 3 or 4 ears for a dollar. In recent years was 8/ $1.00..
Much of our produce comes from South Texas.
bonnie baine says
here in southern pa. I get my corn directly from the farm and I usually get 100 ears to freeze for the winter. we usually pay $20 for 100 ears. this year it went to $25 for 100 ears, which is still a good price. fresh sweet corn is the best.
Tracey says
Can you tell us if you have a preferred method to freeze? Do you take the corn off the cob?
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes, you take it off the cob. Here is a tutorial I did a few years ago: https://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/how-to-freeze-fresh-corn/
Jason says
How about $1.00 each today may 12 2022. At stop and shop. Now I know people are crazy. They can keep there corn and stick it where the sun don’t shine
Nancy says
Where do you live? I was just looking this up because I paid that in Southeast Georgia! May be about the last corn I buy.
Candice says
What is the 2023 price and where do you buy it?
Monica B says
The cheapest I have seen it around here in Southwest Ohio has been 5 ears for $2. Generally, there are few weeks in the summer where it is 8 or 10 ears for $1, and there has not been one sale like that this year.
Donald says
What if I told you that can get it for $2 a dozen would you be interested? We grow sweet corn to fund what we do and sell it for $2 a dozen. It pays for our seeds for 10 acres of onions beets radish cucumber mellons and everything else we grow and donate all that to food banks and soup kitchens
Beth Ruth says
Where are you located please?
Beth B says
I just purchased corn this weekend from the grocery store…it was locally grown about 15 miles down the road and it was $0.33/ear in the St. Louis Metro East area (south-central IL).
Kelli says
Here in Michigan’s thumb, the roadside stands are charging $5/dozen.
Our local Walmart (yes I do grocery pick ups, we’re in the sticks and they’ve been pretty awesome) has fresh, local corn for 10 CENTS per ear. 10 for $1!
I put 4 in my last order and gotta say, it was pretty darn good!
Jamie says
A lot of the midwest has had a drought year and corn prices are higher this year! The farm stands around us are selling for $7/ dozen
Cindi says
I’m able to buy corn fresh from the field for $4 a dozen ears. And it is soooo good!
Katie says
We’re at 3/$1 in central Texas. Last year it was 5/$1.
Lori says
Here in southern Illinois it is 5.00 a dozen straight from the field.
Karen says
In southern New Jersey it is .69 per ear at all farm stands….pretty much same as last year. At grocery stores about .50 but shipped in and not near as sweet or fresh in many cases
Margo says
In San Diego it varies, but I saw it in our local grocery for .50 an ear. Seems like it was a lot lower than that a year or two ago, but between fires out west and flooding elsewhere guess I’ll be grateful it isn’t too much higher than that.
Ruth says
Fresh-picked, shucked, chilled $1/ear at the farm stand.
Nicole says
2 for $1 is about the best you can find Western Washington. 4th of July weekend, there were some promotions for a bit less.
Angie says
I bought two bushels of corn this year to freeze – commercial just doesn’t compare. I may purchase a 3rd bushel if I can find it. I bought my corn from the State Farmers Market close to Atlanta, GA and paid $17/bushel. There were 40-50 ears in each bushel which makes them about $0.30/ear. I have found they are much higher in the grocery stores though.
Dee says
1,79€ for 2 cobs
Mavis Butterfield says
$2.10 USD for two! Eeek!
Dee says
sometimes when you are lucky you can get it for 1,49€ for 2. But the organic ones are about 2,50€ for 2.
Jennifer says
Here in NC, the cheapest around now is 5/$2. It was 3/$1 around the 4th.
Cheryl says
In western PA I’m paying $4.00 for 6 ears but right from the farm, hand picked that day and delicious.
Mel says
We often get corn in our CSA, which works out to about 5 ears for $3. But, it’s locally grown, organic, and delivered to my doorstep.
Debi says
We are in northern NY and we are paying fifty cents an ear, which does seem high to us. Forever farm stands have sold corn by the ear or the dozen and a dozen ears of corn has traditionally been thirteen ears (baker’s dozen). This year the bigger farms around here are not offering the baker’s dozen option, but we found a small, family run stand that does, so that is where we will be buying our corn for the rest of the season!
LDA says
Northern KY for me also. I buy only from (truly) local farmers within our county. I’ve seen $6 per actual dozen for bi-color ($.50 per ear) and $8 per baker’s dozen for Silver King ($.62 per ear).
Melissa says
$5/dozen fresh Sugar Dot straight from the field here in Eastern Washington State.
Katherine says
The price here in Atlanta averages out to 50 cents an ear. Next year you should plant a Three Sisters garden of corn, beans and squash. Read the legend here:
https://www.reneesgarden.com/blogs/gardening-resources/celebrate-the-three-sisters-corn-beans-and-squash
Mimi says
In my rural Oregon town corn is 3/$1.00 at the local farm stand – just a few feet from the field.
Tami Lewis says
Here in NorthEast Texas it goes for 25 cents an ear quite often.
Lissa from Boise says
$8.75 per dozen at the store set up by the farmer. It’s always the best— going on about 10 years now. Just north of Boise, Idaho (please don’t move here)
Mavis Butterfield says
Ha Ha Ha! 🙂 You don’t want me to move there or people in general? FUNNY!
Deb says
Fresh local corn 5 for $1 at the grocery store in South Texas. This is our second crop…we get two crops a year. I buy in quantity and freeze at this price.
Janice says
Here on Vancouver Island I can get delicious peaches and cream corn, straight from the farm for 50 cents an ear.
Pamela says
In North Central Indiana the corn has been selling for $5.00 a dozen from the FFA stand. A local farmer will sell in bulk for $4.00 a dozen. We paid $10 in seed and were blessed with 50 dozen ears. That was 1 1/2 cents per ear and a bit of sweat along the way. Last year the raccoons got half of what we planted, but we beat them this year.
Molly says
It’s .75 an ear at Jordan’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth.
Wynne says
$0.75/ear is normal for a DC farmer’s market, $0.50 is a deal.
Beth’s is known for her really good corn. When I was there last week, a lady walked out with a giant bag hoisted on her shoulder–it looked like four bushels. Maybe 100 ears?
Joanna says
In Southeast Michigan… 30 cents an ear and farm fresh!
Teresa says
5 for $1.00 here in Dallas, Tx
Barbara N Gantt says
Southeast Vermont, corn is $6 a dozen at the field, just picked a few hours before purchase.
Kathleen Williamson says
In Southern Missouri, the local grocery stores have it for 5/$2. At walmart they have been running .30-.33 cents an ear. Most everyone around here grow their own if they are going to put it up, like us. Some years are great and you put up all you can, because other years aren’t lol.
Dianne says
Ohio Valley, straight from the farm to the farm stand, $.75 per year. Worth every penny. Why did the ever get rid of the “cents” sign.
Mavis Butterfield says
I know, it’s super annoying. 🙁
Elizabeth says
$4 a dozen straight from the field in southern Minnesota
Vicki in Birmingham says
I paid $6 for a dozen ears at a little local market 2 weeks ago. That is my only experience to be able to report. It was delicious.
Linda Practical Parsimony says
Birmingham, AL? That is a lot.
Linda Practical Parsimony says
a quarter per ear in Alabama
Pj Truman says
West Virginia $.75 an ear or $6/13 ears.
Amber says
I’m in Indiana, so corn central. We’ve gotten it 10/$1 this season. Currently it’s $0.18/ear at a local grocery store. It has been higher before it was fully Indiana corn season though. At the local farmer’s market, it was $0.50/ear or 6/$2 and let me tell you, it was THE BEST corn I’ve ever had and worth it.
My mother-in-law’s neighbors grow corn and gift her some too, so once they do that, it’s free for me.
Marjorie Fritsch says
In NE PA it’s $4 a dozen at our local Amish market.
Soccamomma says
Here in Michigan the cheapest has been at Walmart (beginning of year) for $0.27 an ear. It was good. Haven’t seen it that cheap since.
Lillian says
$.50 per ear in NC
Allison says
Thanks for the recipe for corn relish. I’ve been paying a pretty penny for a smallish jar at Trader Joe’s -spooned over a bowl of cottage cheese its a happy meal.
J says
Oh, my goodness! Allison, you’re the only person I’ve ever heard of besides my late husband who eats this combination! He would have had this every day, I guess, if he could have. We used to buy Aunt Nellie’s brand at the grocery until they stopped making it. I couldn’t stand to pay $5 a jar for the fancier stuff, so learned to make and preserve it from fresh vegetables. It was well under $1 per jar, not counting my labor, but I enjoyed doing it for him.
Northern Illinois, paying $1 for 3-6 ears of local-ish corn at the store, or $1 an ear at the farmers’ market.
Susan Webster says
Two weeks ago I paid 10/$1.00 as this year was a bumper corn crop here in North Texas. I haven’t seen corn this cheap in years.
My husband roasted the buttered corn on the grill and I cut it off the cob to freeze! We add fresh, grilled corn to tacos, mexican casseroles, soups etc.
Yum!
Tim says
Good luck finding big ears of corn on the cob anywhere along the road anymore. Walmart sells little ears for under a buck per ear.
Stop boiling your corn and grill it with the husk still on for 20 minutes rotated every few minutes. Boiling looses vitamins. With the grill, husk comes off easier.
Add butter, salt and serve with the husk pulled back.
Christine says
Vermont it’s $13 a dozen. Highest I’ve ever seen. I’ve had one ear so I’m good. I feel like everything is becoming a luxury item.
