Last week when The Girl asked me if I wanted for my birthday, I told her I wanted her to go to Costco and do a stock up trip for me. And what do you know, she took the bait. 🙂
{I would have asked her to go to Market Basket too but since I haven’t been since early October I want the chance to wander the aisles and toss random stuff {and stuff we need} in my cart}. Costco is a whole different ball of wax though. Food wise, there really aren’t too many surprises at Costco so it’s much easier to give someone a list for.
Costco Shopping Trip $321.36
I can’t even tell you the last time I had Sun Chips. Man they’re good! I think the harvest cheddar ones are my favorite. And jelly beans. I’ve missed those too. Although the Russel Stover Pectin jelly beans are my all time favorite.
The salmon was $29.99 a bag {$59.98 total}, the steak tips were $48.82 {wowza!} and the ground beef was $19.49. Maybe it’s all in my head because I don’t shop much anymore, but I think prices have definitely gone up in the past year. Luckily though we don’t purchase as many meat products as we used to or else I think it would totally break the bank.
The freezer is nearly stocked though so that’s a good thing. I have an appointment this week that will take me down south so I’ll be getting the rest of the things we’ll need for the next few months {maybe all summer if I’m lucky!} at Market Basket {aside from produce, deli meat and bread of course. We will continue to pick those items up from our little general store as needed}.
It’s not that I fear grocery shopping, it’s that I’ve come to loath it. The crowds, the noise, the gimmicks, and as of late, the whole zombie apocalypse/glazed over feel about the whole thing. If I could get my husband to build an underground bomb shelter and stock it with a 20 year supply of food, I’d totally do it. Ice cream though… I’d probably leave the house for that. 😉
And sweets. We mustn’t forget about the cakes and cookies. 😉 And pie.
Here are some of the things I ate last week:
Loaded baked potatoes {butter, sour cream, bacon and cheese}.
Meatloaf beetloaf.
Apple pie.
Big salad with pickled onions. Oink oink!
Pulled pork and the best potato salad ever!
Salmon, rice and broccoli.
And last but not least, half a ham sandwich {on toasted bread of course} and a few Cape Cod chips. Life is good!
How about YOU? Did you eat anything exciting last week?
Have a wonderful Monday everyone,
~Mavis

I am with you I hate grocery shopping we have made a larger pantry in our basement so I only need to stock up every few months. And yes the prices have gone crazy. I wonder how families feed themselves.

For dinners, I’ve mostly been using up freezer meals (or doing takeout because it’s been a rough month). But our CSA added a winter fruit share, so I’ve been baking lots of orange and grapefruit things for breakfasts. I made sour cream orange muffins, grapefruit scones, and grapefruit bread. I did double batches of everything so we’d have some to freeze.

We’re getting ready to leave on vacation, so I’m just using odds and ends up out of the fridge and freezer. Nothing too exciting here.
Your salmon looks good. What’s your favorite way to prepare it?
Have a beautiful week!

Happy belated Birthday Mavis. Have a great year.

I LOVE grocery shopping. Stock up trips are my favorite. I hate having to put everything away once home though!

I’m with you! I found if I separate the groceries into frozen and refrigerated and then everything else when I put it on the checkout belt, I can keep it separated in the car. When I get home I only put the cold things away and then relax. Then the next day I take my time (or get help) putting the rest away. Since we only shop once or twice a month we get larger amounts and this has REALLY helped me AND I do a better job putting them away. Best wishes!

I hate grocery shopping — I hope the grocery stores keep this ‘order it on-line and drive up and we’ll put it in your car’ thing forever. I hope it doesn’t go away after COVID.
Katherine says
I could not agree more. I use online ordering and curb side pick up for almost everything. Lowes, Home Depot, Target etc. It’s a major time saver and we’ve actually saved money shopping this way. There is no temptation.

Agreed…and I love going to eat and not being so close to people…reduced capacity is a okay by me….as is people keeping back @ the stores.

“Meatloaf beetloaf?” Do you have a recipe to share?
Linda T says
I know it’s probably even later than I think, but Happy Birthday, Mavis.
My husband loves to shop, and I’d rather be drawn and quartered, so he happily does the grocery shopping. I’m with you!

BEAUTIFUL cake …. looks like a magazine photo! (Did you say what kind it was and who made it?). Happy Belated Birthday!!!

Regular grocery shopping is alright. However, I do love to go to ethnic grocery stores. I love trying something that I have no idea what it is other than the picture on the front. We have a lot of Polish, Palestinian, Greek, and Mexican stores by us. Some are a total bust and some are new favorites.

Impressive looking cake!

Ummm… we were supposed to notice that the salad looked like a smiley face — right? (Hard-boiled egg halves with strategically-positioned somethings – cranberries?)
Naomi C. says
Cindy, I noticed the same thing! Big smiley face of salad.
Christie says
We miss Lucy! Can we see more pictures of her? 🙂

Man, I haven’t had potato salad in forever! The pickle juice must make it so yummy…thanks for the recipe.
