Isn’t it funny how some weeks you feel like you really rocked it in the I ate like an adult category of life and other weeks it’s all about grabbing food on the go or indulging?
Well, I’m happy to report that last week, I totally nailed it in the food department. I ate all homemade meals, got in plenty of veggies and slept at least 8 hours every night.
So that means this week, I can make myself a pie. Right? 😉
Baked potato with sour cream, bacon and parmesan.
Turkey pot pie.
Ham sandwich and sun chips.
Ham sandwich and sun chips 2.0
Corned beef, sprouts, carrots cooked in the crock pot with a side of mashed potatoes.
Roasted potatoes, carrots and leftover corned beef thrown towards the end.
Big salad with pickled onions, pickled beets and creamy hard boiled eggs.
Pickety bits for the win.
General store $15.52
Our big shopping trip of the week. Or rather the HH’s big trip of the week. 😉
Question: Is it just my imagination, or didn’t bagels used to come 6 to a pack? Now it’s 5? Maybe I’m starting to lose it, but I thought for sure they used to come in 6 packs.
Packaging. It just seems to be getting smaller and smaller.
Well, enough about me, how about YOU? Did you eat well last week? Make anything exciting? Make a pie??? Curious minds want to know.
It’s Monday, so you know, proceed with caution. 😉
Have a good one,
~Mavis

So many companies have dropped the amount of food and kept the price the same. I remember this first happening with coffee as it went from a 1 pound can to 13 ounces. And ice cream went from half gallon to 1.5 quarts. What, like we don’t notice?
Lana says
And now most coffee is 11 ounces.
Don’t forget spaghetti sauce! Used to be 32 ounce jars and now it’s down to 24 ounces! I hate that size because it’s not quite enough sauce for any of my older recipes, but if I get two jars then I have too much sauce left over.Diane says

Jenny says
1 jar + 1-2 cans tomato sauce to equal 32 oz. Taste, then add a little seasoning if needed. Fixes the quantity problem, but sure doesn’t fix the PRICE issue!
Or, freeze the unused part of the second jar of pasta sauce right in the jar, or divide into 8 oz portions in a little zipper bag or jar and LABEL so you remember what it is. Then you have the needed amount to add when you open the next jar.
See, we are using that math they taught in school!
Also, did you know toilet paper rolls are shrinking in width?
Christina@BargainBlog says
My favorite way to make spaghetti sauce is one jar of sauce plus 1 large can diced tomatoes. It is so good! Plus lots of garlic, onions, shrooms and herbs. The diced tomatoes really stretch out the sauce. :))

And now sugar is in 4 lb bags rather than 5 lb.

You and the HH should try these, they’re fantastic. https://tastykitchen.com/recipes/appetizers-and-snacks/buttery-ham-and-swiss-sliders/

Yes to what we call in the South “those poppyseed party rolls”….failproof and delicious, they are a go-to for entertaining!

Your week does look like you did the adult food thing well so yes you should get pie this week…or oatmeal cookies…or both! We moved my mother a week ago so we have continued to be busy getting her settled which is my excuse-reason for lots of takeout…settling down this week to home cooked meals again! My HH did grill steaks on Saturday and we made big salads with grilled chicken apple sausages on top last night so we’re back to adult eating…
Christina@BargainBlog says
We have that to look forward to next week! (Moving my Mom, I mean.) Plus a big move out of her old place tomorrow. Yikes!!
Quite a lot of takeout here too, plus lots of easy to grab meals. But it helps us keep our sanity so it’s all good.

I made 2 pies last week, apple and banana cream. Plus peanut butter cookies and chocolate mint chip cookies. It was a good snack week at our house plus a birthday celebration.
Yes things are getting smaller but the prices don’t seem to be. Your dinner week looks delicious!

Pie, pie, pie! It can count as a fruit serving! I vote “yes” to eating more pie.

I’ve been eating my version of Mavis’ creamy spiced red beans this week, and it’s good! But my pride and joy this week was a cauliflower curry — it tastes wonderful and made the house smell fantastic while it was cooking.
I altered the recipe a bit (I’m not much of a tomato fan) but here is what I started with:

Pie for sure! 1 crust apple with oatmeal streusel on top. Better for you than a pop tart or cinnamon roll for breakfast!! Yes packaging is ever changing. They try to trick you. The front of the Kraft Mac and cheese box says calories of 260 and in little letters (unprepared). Now I don’t know about you but I don’t eat it unprepared.
Nanci Fitschen says
I remember cake mixes being 25 ounces. Now they’re a little over 15 ounces.

Crazy the past 3 weeks in the eating department!! Found out my husband is allergic to beef and some dairy products due to Alpha-Gal caused by a tick bite. It is amazing how much beef and beef by-products are in almost everything. There is even animal fat in most dishwashing detergents.
And yes we have noticed 5 bagels in a package too.

Your salads made me want to try adding pickled onions. I looked at our grocery story but couldn’t find them amongst the pickle-y section. Did you can them yourself or should I be able to find them?
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Sara,
You can make them yourself. 🙂 I will post a recipe soon.

Thank you!

On the getting less for the same money train, I’d rather pay a little more and get what I’m used to getting. As a previous reader commented, when they lower the amount you get, sometimes you can’t make the recipe. Grrr!

In the PNW, Tillamook has reduced the size of its ice cream cartons from 1.75oz to 1.5oz & raised the price $1.00!

It’s not just grocery packages that have smaller quantities. I used to buy mulch in bags at HD when they had their annual spring sale (5 bags for $10). Last year I noticed the bags are now only 1.5 cubic ft when in previous years they were 2 cubic ft. That means you are getting 2.5 cubic ft less mulch now if you buy 5 bags. I shopped around and found the 2 cubic feet bags at other places so I no longer buy mulch from HD. I really think these corporate people think consumers aren’t smart enough to figure out these things.

To celebrate Pie Day a few days ago (3.14) I made an apple pie from some frozen apple pie filling that I made this past Fall. We press our own cider so I mix the apples left over and make pie filling to freeze. Easy and delicious and it made more space in the freezer. Double win! 🙂
Thank you for the pie crust recipe! it has become my go to for making crust. Sorry to tempt you, but now you know you’re going to have to make a pie. 🙂
